The Whitebrook - Homemade bread and crackers for the cheese board

Such a wonderful experience!…read more Although the food and setting was gorgeous, service felt unpretentious and wonderfully paced. The soundtrack for the afternoon was likewise; I think I expected some form of ambient trance and, this is not a joke, "Down in New Orleans" from Disney's "Princess and the Frog" played during our appetizer course (we thought this was hilarious and awesome). With regard to drinks, the seasonal Sorrel Daiquiri was my friend's favorite and the wine selection was very interesting with lots of English and Welsh options. I ordered off of the vegetarian menu and I didn't miss meat for a heartbeat--and, as a bonus, they grow, harvest, and serve a number of vegetables from their own property. It can feel like a financial investment, and it's certainly out of the way, but well worth it.

A very warm welcome awaited us, and we were shown to our room where freshly-baked warm Welshcakes awaited us. I took a leisurely bath and got ready for our tasting menu dinner. The food was phenomenal - having eaten shortly beforehand at Tom Kitchin's in Edinburgh, aspects of this meal were even better. The canapes, the cocktails, the bread, the nice touch of the nettle macaron to send you off to bed - all amazing. The service was really exceptional, really fantastic. They were also happy to accommodate my dietary requirements and substitute dishes, which was great. The only downside to dinner was that the chef patron walked out of the kitchen and straight past us (and then back to kitchen) without greeting any of the diners - seemed a bit odd when he wasn't really that busy and there were only 4 of us. It didn't mar our enjoyment of the meal, but would have been an "icing on the cake" touch. The chap who was in charge of service was really brilliant - his recommendations were spot-on. The dining room is very small, only one other couple were dining at the same time of us - the atmosphere was a little weird as they appeared to have fallen out before dinner! But we had a great time, despite my partner having a terrible cold. We had a great night's sleep in the comfortable bed, and then breakfast next morning was another culinary triumph. I can't wait to go back soon!

Service by the staff was spot-on. The owner even gave us a ride in his car to the train station when we left. There is parking on the premises, and it is a short walk to Puzzlewood. The bad? Wi-Fi service was a bit touch-and-go, and the layout of the building is a bit awkward. Also, I am 188cm (6 feet, 2 inches) tall and had to watch my head at one of the interior doorways. The four of us agree that we'd love to stay here again when in the area. The what3words location of Lambsquay's front door is: crunching.busy.gripes https://map.what3words.com/crunching.busy.gripes

The service was really good - the manager was friendly and helpful at all times, in the face of occasionally extreme provocation (like when Andy and Paddy turned up back at the hotel with me at 2am but having left their room keys in their car back at the wedding venue). He also lent Chewy some cuff links without even blinking. My fried breakfast was on the greasy side but I wasn't really ready for eating at that time the next day anyway. Chewy says there is a ghost of an old fashioned lady in room 11 who he spoke to for a few hours on Tuesday night

We were here on this occasion for a celebratory meal in the Verderers Court Restaurant. We remembered the place having stayed in the hotel a couple of years prior. From booking to leaving, dining here was a pleasure. There were 8 of us (including a 9 year old nephew!). Starters included plump smoked mackerel, generous and chunky game pate, parma ham and melon and chunky shrimps in a marie rose dressing. Delicious, generous and delightfully 'English' - this food wasn't pretending to be anything else than good. Main courses included Wild Boar Tournedos in a Madeira and Star Anise jus, Duck Breast with plums and a Mushroom Risotto. Again, largely 'English' dishes (excepting the Risotto) done well and served in generous proportion. Puddings ranged from ice cream to Almond and Cherry Pithivier via Lemon Pannacotta Tart with Strawberries and Profiteroles with Chocolate - delicious, we all agreed. Price wise we did not feel cheated. Including a bottle of Chateuneuf du Pape, a couple of glasses of Cote du Rhone and a couple of Pints, we paid around £25 a head. The food and attentive service justified the price. Though the Speech House has had a slight makeover, the spirit of the place has not been lost. As with so much of the Forest of Dean, there is a palpable atmosphere . . . . a sense of being alone (in the nicest way). The comfort here more than makes up for any feeling of loneliness! Curl up after a hearty meal with a book or one of the many magazines or papers besides one of the many roaring fires. The Speech House is so called as in addition to being a hunting lodge and later an inn, it also functioned as the place where free miners and verderers (forest dwellers) came to have their disputes heard by the monarch or his/her representative. That sense of place and history still remains. It's a delight, long may it stay that way.

After yesterday's experience in Oxford we were wary when eying the menu and finding "cream tea" for only 5.95£ but three of us decided to risk it. It just felt right. It was perfect! The teas were delicious and hot (and the pots were ceramic and of the right size). Additional hot water was served on the side. The scones were warm and flaky. The clotted cream was just that - cream! Clotted! And the strawberry preserves were sweet perfection. Our server was attentive but not obsequious. The building was beautiful (having been constructed as a hunting lodge in the 17th century). If we'd had more time we would have stayed the night and spent more time. Highly recommended for those on a road trip!
