It has been lovingly restored to offer a classic Cotswolds pub and B&B to guests with open log fires, exposed beams and many original features. Located in the Castle Combe market place, the historic inn has seen the likes of Oliver Cromwell (English politician and military officer) pass through its doors. After touring through the Cotswolds, we stopped at the Inn for some lunch. We were one of the first guests to arrive that day and were seated promptly. Their restaurant serves a surprisingly creative British menu with many gluten free options and features an extensive wine list. I had yet to eat fish 'n chips on this trip and so I went with the Lager Battered Catch of the Day which came with a pea puree, dripping chips, and curry sauce. This was probably the most interesting fish 'n chips I've had to date. I've never had it come with 'dipping sauces' before. I normally just have it with a bunch of malt vinegar, but dipping it in that curry sauce was so incredibly delicious! Woah! The pea sauce was also interesting, but I found myself continuously going back to the curry. The dish was also perfectly fried with a crispy outside, moist inside, and it was not oily at all. This was honestly the best I had while in the UK and I still think about it months later! If I had malt vinegar it would have been even better. My other half had some local beer with the Breast of Creedy Duck w/ Leg Ragu, Braised Onion, and Asparagus and Turnip. This dish was lovely and nicely presented. My husband really enjoyed it. The lag ragu in braised onion was very flavorful and I would have eaten an entree size of that. Our little one had mac n' cheese. It was a bit pricey for a lunch, but given the location, limited options, history, and quality of products; it's understandable. The service was a bit slower than we would have liked (that may be my American expectations speaking), but overall, we had a lovely time and enjoyed our lunch in this magical little English village. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

I was in room 3 which overlooks the Market Street (although no Market) and another local Public House. Nice plesant public areas including a recently refurbished restaurant which is relatively modern but still in-keeping with this old building. There is also a bar area where lots of the locals enjoy a wide selection of drinks including 4 cask ales, 4 draught lagers and Guinness, as well as a local Cider (Ashton Press). The Front of House Staff are all very friendly and accommodating namely Nicola, Emillia, AJ and Flo. The owner of the property is frequently on site and ensures everyone is made to feel at home (David). The food is good, many dishes cooked in-house and mostly 'to-order'. I couldn't find anything negative to say about this property and (I for one) will be back , they are gradually refurbishing the hotel and what has been done to date is nice and tastefull. Well worth a visit, the room rates are excellent, and includes freshly cooked breakfast to individually placed orders.

Off to an awful start…read more We contacted the hotel before arrival to especially request soya milk for breakfast which they said they would provide, we arrived and no soya milk and more importantly not really any expressed concern that they hadn't provided any despite saying they would. Not off to a great start but still not the end of the world. So we then ask if there's any chance we can check out an hour later the next morning as we were going to a wedding and would arrive too early, the boy on reception said he'd ring and check, he then came back to us with "no it's company policy and the rooms are fully booked", very much a classic computer says no approach. We finally get to the average looking room and go to have a shower, the shower doesn't work. This wasn't low water pressure, personal preference or complicated knobs not working, this was no water is coming out not working. We ring reception and the same boy as before says he'll come look, he comes up to the room spends a couple of minutes in the bathroom turning the tap on and off, sighing and saying "for fuck sake" before announcing "it's not working but it's too late to do anything about it now". Again we state the obvious "okay but we need to wash so what are you going to do about it?" We ask to try a shower in another room, he says he will have to ring someone and goes off to call a manager who it seems clearly couldn't give a shit. He tells us we can try the room next door (despite earlier being told they were fully booked) but the shower in there is exactly the same and no water is coming out! Here we have to state the obvious that "Why are you renting rooms out when the showers do not work?" Or "How do you not know that the showers do not work?" We are told that no one else has complained (right....) So we ask to try another (note again that we were told they were fully booked!) and in this room the water is finally running but only ice cold. Once again we ring reception and ask why do none of the showers work and this time the boy gives the phone to a manager who says, wait for it, "It's too late to do anything". We ask them quite simply "would you pay for a room when you could not wash?" And at this point we are responded to with "uhhhhh" sounds until we hang up. We explained all this to the day staff the next morning who had had no message passed to them by the night staff about the shower not working at all. The manager apologised and said that the night manager had been off sick the night before. We explained we expected some compensation and fortunately were given a partial refund. Ended better than it started but I think some of the staff could really do with a lesson in customer service and the shower issues need to be addressed.

I am always suspicious when the menu has to use grandiose descriptions to impress when no one is actually going to know what it means. The few times I have ordered venison in the past, I was asked how I wanted it - which for venison everyone knows is either rare or medium rare. I was not asked, so assumed at least it was going to come pink in the middle. What I was served was a kind of medallion but a token nod to a Wellington - encased in a soggy, slightly raw, unappetizing pastry. (This is not described on the menu). The meat was overcooked and not even slightly pink in the middle, and the whole dish was rather a sad offering - especially considering the £26.90 price. Trying to impress with an artistic presentation, but definitely style over substance. The dish was served lukewarm and the service was slow and not particularly friendly. I complained politely but firmly about the venison and ordered Mac Cheese (which I thought a safe option) and this came within five minutes so must have been ready to go. It was again pretty awful, one solid mass (not soft and creamy at all) and not very hot. The Mac Cheese could more or less be picked up in one lump. The photo shows the venison and as can be seen, even if it had been worth eating, for the price, it wasn't exactly a hearty portion. At 699 calories, most people would probably need a side dish as the portion size is pretty meagre. One of the worst meals I have ever had in a supposedly high-end restaurant. After complaining about both dishes, the outcome was that the duty manager was called to the table and after a brief discussion, where I gave my opinion of the food in a quiet and measured way (no shouting, swearing or offensive personal comments) and was told to leave the premises. I was shocked at this action - surely an over- reaction? Isn't one of the roles of a manager to resolve conflicts to reach an amicable outcome? Unfortunately, it was very early (about 6:30 pm) and there was only one couple at a table far from mine, so no other diners could witness this action - I am sure the manager would have tried to resolve the situation in another way if there had been other diners nearby as it would not have been good for business.

People - Fantastic, really loved the helpfulness and authenticity of all the staff here Location - Right in the thick of the action in a nice little market town with plenty of shops and things to see.. Food - From the full English incl. black pudding to the liver and onion and MASSIVE fish n chips portions, the food really hit and excelled the mark. I suspect this place prides and aims at gastro pub status as their benchmark. Room - We were in #12 an attic room, for the first night we felt it was quaint and nice but by the 2nd night it was wearing on us a bit being small, dark, very limited airflow and with extremely low ceilings so wasn't easy to traverse.. We also had an issue with the bathroom having no vanity area, no towel rail and the radiator in the bedroom made such a racket I thought we were above the kitchen exhausts. As an alternative view, my uncle and aunt stayed in one of the other rooms and loved it which was also cheaper than #12 for some strange reason. So overall, really pleased we picked this establishment, we would use it again and highly recommend it BUT perhaps we would suggest avoiding #12 :-)

Across-street parking is available, although limited to one hour. We found this to be beneficial in checking in and dropping off our bags before relocating the car to the long-stay car park less than a three minute walk from the hotel. We received a professional and informative welcome from a member of staff, who offered to take our bags before showing us to our room. Be aware that the hotel reception is on the right of a central outdoor passageway and the hotel bar is on the left, and it would appear as though staff share responsibilities between the two. If there is no-one at reception at your time of arrival you may want to pop over to the bar to make yourself known? Tucked away in the loft our spacious and decorous room featured an ample king size bed with ornate bed stead and corresponding furnishings, a correctly-tuned digital television, telephone with easy access to reception, a decent hair dryer, a generous provision of tea and coffee making facilities, and a view over the multitude of the sixteenth and seventeenth century rooftops of Tetbury town centre. Like the bedroom our bathroom was clean, tidy and spacious. The shower was of a high standard and we appreciated the inclusion of a bathtub. Mini bottles of shower gel and shampoo were provided, along with ample towels. Our overall sleep quality was good, although we found the duck feather pillows were not as firm as we prefer and although not impossible, it was difficult to find immediate comfort. We were concerned that our evening may be interrupted by noise from the hotel bar courtyard, but we actually enjoyed a very peaceful stay. Breakfast was available up until 10am and could be found in the hotel restaurant, situated behind the bar area. In addition to cereals, toast, fruit, yoghurt, and hot drinks, the extensive menu presented options to cater for almost all tastes and palates. The French toast with bacon and maple syrup, and the eggs benedict were particularly enjoyable. We couldn't help but feel for the solitary member of staff who appeared to be responsible for running the entire breakfast sitting, providing bar service, and dealing with hotel guests. Despite an obvious strain on this member of staff's behalf, we were quickly served and dealt with in an entirely professional manner.

The "kitchen" seems to rule the roost here as almost every question is met with "let me check with "the kitchen." "The kitchen" must be an omnipotent presence because the staff usually has a bit of trepidation when going to ask "the kitchen" questions. They have a small selection of items on the dining room menu and the food is not excellent and any deviation from items on the menu are strictly frowned upon. The menu does not change from day to day. Luckily, you may order from the bar menu in the library. This menu does not change either, but it does break up the monotony. We tended to enjoy this food more, but service was slow and inconsistent . Breakfast is the better option when dining in the dining room. The staff for the most part seems to operate with little or no training. They NEVER filled the water glasses. That's your job. They NEVER poured the wine, again, that's your job. This hotel seems to lack strong leadership. We had two rooms. The Queen Elizabeth room has extremely low beams. If one is over 5'3", one WILL hit their heads. We had to go to the front desk for ice to put on head bumps more than once. The third floor is for the most fit as there is no lift. Yes, I know we were staying in a castle and it was not going to be perfect, but for the price one is paying here, you expect first class service. Having said all of that, the gardens in the back are lovely, the visage from the front lawn is beautiful and the staff, though poorly, trained are friendly. Liam in the library area was very friendly and helpful. They need to have a rotating menu. The options in the nearby town are few to dine. It is possible to have a rotating menu, we also stayed at other manor houses which had wonderful menus and well-trained staff this trip.

The rates per night were a bit steep, but I justified it because "how often do ya do something like this?" So we did a night with dinner and breakfast included. Getting to the castle wasn't too bad we rented a car and made the journey into town. Parking is available and I believe they also have a charging area for EV. We checked in and were taken to our room, Queen Margaret's room. The employee was kind and explained some of the amenities like the complimentary gin and the common areas of the castle. We changed and went to explore, there was a wedding the night we were there so I feel like our exploration was cut a bit short since areas were reserved for them. We noticed there was a scale available in the room, but it needed a new battery so we asked at the desk for a replacement and was informed it would be done at turndown service. After walking the gardens, we went for drinks and played some of the games available in the sitting room/lounge. It was a bit unclear as to how to get bar service or the other amenities advertised. Having done research before it felt like there were things to do but upon arrival it was hard to figure out what we were able to do. Dinner was excellent; while sitting in the lounge you're served some almonds/olives and canapés where you place your order and then you're brought back into the main dining room. There is plenty of food even without the formal 6 course meal but it really is a fancy experience and the food is true art. We made an assumption that turndown service would happen at dinner but upon returning to our room- 2 to 3 hours later, everything looked the same. The shower was incredible and the bed was nice. You're provided with a fan which was helpful. Breakfast was a bit disappointing after the dinner we had the previous night- not sure I would need that component again. At check out I was given the invoice for one of the wedding guests, we had to refund that amount and charge the costs for our room. Looking at my statement the charges aren't equal so that's mildly concerning as well. Overall, Thornbury was still a cool experience for the bragging rights of staying in Henry VIII's castle, but I don't think I need to do it again. I'd come for the dinner but maybe skip the overnight stay.
