Ate in the restaurant as we were quite late arriving and the food and service were excellent, and very reasonable too. We will definitely be going here again, would recommend it to anyone. Our reception by the night-porter was cordial and he willingly served us to drinks because he'd sent the bar staff home. The bedroom and bathroom were modern, well fitted and had excellent views across to Bredon Hill. Breakfast, however, was a different prospect. Unclothed tables, covered in crumbs and no-one to greet or offer tea and coffee. When someone merged from the kitchen, extravagant gestures were required to fill our mugs. Whilst accepting that we'd descended for breakfast at (but not after) the end of the advertised breakfast time, this was no excuse for dehydrated bacon and sausage, rock-hard black pudding and fried eggs, swimming in oil, which were completely solid and rubbery. As if this wasn't enough, the picture window gave a panoramic view of the bins being emptied into the refuse vehicle a seemingly interminable process. We spent the day on the hills and returned to find, as before, smokers decorating the front steps an undignified sight, but probably unavoidable given the smoking ban and the apparent shortage of alternative places to indulge in tobacco. Breakfast on the following day was better inasmuch as the cooked offering was palatable, although the fruit was only partially thawed. Large chunks of frozen raspberry are not pleasant although the hot bowls straight from the dishwasher helped. It was a shame that the cooked breakfast was on cold plates. Front desk security was poor I was given an additional key card for our room on request with no suggestion of interrogation as to whether I had any entitlement. Will we be staying again? Well it certainly wouldn't be our first choice for this lovely part of Worcestershire.

As it's on a Friday night (and on until late), overnight accommodation is a must. We have been to a few different serviced apartments in the City which have been great (as we normally travel in quite a large group from Birmingham), but for last Friday's edition there was a small party of three people. We checked the normal booking sites for accommodation choices, but after a little mooch around came across "The Big Sleep Hotel" on one such hotel comparison website. First thing to mention is that the Big Sleep Hotel is co-owned by John Malkovich. Cool huh? Second thing to note is that they have rooms which can fit up to 4 adults for a pretty bargain price (which includes a hot breakfast). The charge for £90 (£96 including secure parking) seemed like a bit of a no-brainer so we booked on the spot. This hotel in the centre of Cheltenham was really easy to find. We punched the direction details into the SatNav and whizzed our way there from Birmingham in around 45 minutes. Upon arrival, we buzzed the carpark to grab a space (the last one available) and mooched into Reception. The parking in this small secured space is "first come, first served", so the earlier you get there the better. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We filled in the check-in details and were given our room key (they asked how many we wanted and we ended up with three). The reception space was bright, colourful and clean and had a small bar and dining area attached to it. The reception and bar are open 24 hours too, perfect for a nightcap if you're that way inclined. We asked if there was any takeaways nearby and was handed a folder with a number of menus from local restaurants. We were even advised we could take plates and cutlery from the dining area. The small touches really did make this place stand out. Our room was fab. 4 Single beds, a couch and table, a shower room (with a sink) and a separate room next door with the toilet in it. Handy, when you have more than one adult wanting to get ready at the same time. There was also a number of mirrors in the room, so not everyone had to crowd around the bathroom. The room had plenty of tea and coffee, a kettle, a hairdryer, a vanity stand and several power-points. Again, the room had everything we needed for an overnight stay but still kept a great sense of minimal, colourful design. The beds could have been comfier, but if you are heading out for a couple of nights they're totally fine. I would thoroughly recommend this chain for a weekend away. There are currently only three locations (Cheltenham, Cardiff and Eastbourne) but I would most certainly use them again.

Breakfasts were wonderful, with each morning offering a different choice from the simple yet extensive menu. The beds were comfortable, the night was quiet, and the shower was clean. A kettle with tea and cookies along with a small fridge kept our hunger at bay. The WiFi signal was marginal in one corner of the room, but perfectly fine on the other side, so we were quite happy with our internet access. We only got a hotel because so many people were visiting our family that they just did not have room for us all, but for future visits we might need to make up some sort of excuse to not stay with them but instead stay at the "GMH". OK, that might not work because really I am a cheapskate, and family is mostly free, but we really did love out stay.

It must be people who've never stayed in actual 5 star hotels. The grounds are maybe 4 star. The room is 2 star. The service is 1 star. We had to fill out our breakfast choices on a list like you'd do in a 3 or 4 star restaurant the day before. And as if that's not bad enough, the food is rationed. You get one mushroom and one sausage on your plate. They do not have veggies to add to an omelette. They can't make boiled eggs. If you happen to forget to fill out the breakfast list the day before, they have no flexibility. You just won't eat, because the food is rationed out precisely as to how many guests will eat. The number of eggs is exact etc. The same women who cook also clean, so they are visibly irritated when you show up without submitting your choices the night before because they have to hurry to clean the rooms. They only serve breakfast in a 1.5 hour window because they have to rush to go and start cleaning the guest rooms. We asked for extra towels and extra water in the room. It never happened. The bath soap was not refilled. The cleaning ladies left their cleaning agents in our bathroom twice. I can understand this happening once but twice is horrendous. I have never seen this happen before in a 5 star hotel. We have stayed in many 5 star hotels and this is DEFINITELY NOWHERE near 5 stars. It is 3 star at the most! They are clearly trying to make a huge profit by economizing their supplies, food and staff!!! And the outside of the door is unkempt. The room is tired, the bed is tiny--IT IS NOT KING SIZE. IT IS QUEEN. The bed sheets are very low quality, the room is dusty and smells stale and the entire room is 2 star. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE BAD REVIEWS: THEY ARE THE TRUTH!!!

The rooms are spacious and well appointed with nice touches like a great selection of teas and shortbread cookies. Super comfortable bed as well. The grounds are huge and we played croquets. Surprisingly this time I was placed in a better room than the other times - refurbished rooms, more modern, new furniture with dark wood, bigger TV with options to connect your devices on the wall, nice tiles in the bathroom. Other than that, good service, polite and helpful staff with the breakfast right opposite at the Beafeater. No complaints and good location for going to the customer, so yes I'll go back again!
