Wurst has been in business for almost 130 years so that says something. Anyway, I love Wurst. Oftentimes, the sausages you'll buy at a grocery store taste pretty similar to each other regardless of whether it's a brat or a Polish or whatever. Here, everything is very distinctive, even the different kinds of brats. They have everything from standard grilling brats to Rinderwurst, breakfast sausages, bangers, Nurnbergers... they also carry all the stuff you'll want with your sausages. Mustards, crackers, buns, relishes. They also do game meat processing for people who hunt. The store itself is like stepping into something from the 1930s. They have modern refrigeration but the interior is very old and has a distinct smell of butcher shop, wood and history. During warm months they operate a small walkup stand out back where you can buy and eat cooked sausages. read more

I was born in 1950 and when I was a boy my Mom, of German heritage, would travel from Oak Park to Otto's Meat Market in Elmhurst for their authentic sausages. Otto's and other butcher shops like it are long gone but Wurst Kitchen survives ! Love their sausages, and their andouille is the best ever - garlic forward with just the right amount of heat. I'm writing this review as a result of the Aurora Christkindlmarkt. I had the Smoked Cheese Austrian Bratwurst. It was actually very delicious! HOWEVER, I have 2 issues: 1) The f$&@ing price was $15 a sausage! Like come on!! I get that being a vendor there is probably expensive (I actually don't know). But that's no more than an $8 sausage and you know it. 2) Credit card fees are called "THE COST OF DOING BUSINESS". Yes, they are expensive. So is being a business in the first place. Price your sh&$ accordingly. It's a f$&@ing convenience for YOU not to have to accept cash. So don't charge me for it. Don't want to pay for credit card fees? Don't bother selling anything! Society will NEVER move to being cashless, but I have no worry in the world if my credit card gets stolen. If my wallet gets stolen, I'm out every dollar of cash that was in there. So when I'm in a crowd, I only carry plastic. Otherwise, this place is OKAY. I wouldn't think of stopping in because I don't feel like being screwed on price. It's sad, because I love meat shops too! First off, I'm so mad at myself for not knowing this place even existed until last week! WTH!!! As soon as I saw the yelp reviews, I knew that I had to check this place out, and pronto. The first grill-friendly day arrived this past weekend, and we were so there! Hubby and I both love homemade sausage, but haven't found a place locally that impresses us. We've tried Caputo's, we've tried various other meat markets, both in the burbs and in the City, we've tried A LOT of places. While the flavors are tasty, the problem for us is that the grind on the sausage is too coarse and you always end up biting down on "questionable" hunks of grossness (what I like to refer to as "teeth"). Oh hey honey, I just found another tooth in my sausage! Gah! Wurst Kitchen is the answer to all our sausage prayers! They use a finer grind on their meat (HALLELUJAH!) and the variety of flavors is epic - the have about 70 flavors under their belt! The woman who was working when we stopped in on Sunday was super friendly and gave us the rundown on their sausages, including customer favorites. She warned us that we would never buy a Johnsonville sausage again which we were more than ok with, since we didn't like them to begin with! We opted to try one of each of the fresh sausages they had in the front counter that day (Cheddar Jalapeno, Jack Daniels, Original Bratwurst and a Kicker). We also grabbed a 4-pack out of the freezer, the Moroccan Lamb, which turned out to be our favorite. The Cheddar Jalapeno was our second favorite. Nicely seasoned and the jalapeno gave the perfect amount of heat. The four flavors we picked from the fresh counter ranged from $5-6 a pound, which is VERY reasonable for the great quality you are getting. The lamb sausage was quite a bit more, over $10 a pound, but it was absolutely fantastic and full of flavor. Totally worth it! During dinner, we kept ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the quality and flavor and how excited we were to have discovered such a great place! We cannot wait for our next trip so we can try out some more new flavors. Our plan is to try them all. Our grill is in for some heavy use this summer. Booyah! read more

Fantastic old school sausage emporium. The variety and quality go hand in hand. Don't get overwhelmed while viewing the sausages in the meat case. That happened to me the first few times I came here. You end up buying to much for a single visit and most eventually ends up in your freezer. The sausage is made fresh daily and tastes best cooked that way...fresh, never frozen. Use restraint and purchase a few variety's only, enough to consume in a day or two. Careful, plenty to choose from here. This gives you the perfect excuse to come back and do it all over again. I grew up in Berwyn, during the Sixties. There were still a plethora of old school Bohemian Butchers which, due to my Pa having gastric woes, we had to get our meat from instead of the supermarkets. (The nutritionists at the Hospital said that supermarket meat was inferior). The old-school Bohunk Butchers took ultimate care in their product, and that included the lunch meats and casing-based treats like the weenies and unmentionables (like Jaternice and Jelita--if you don't know, don't ask) My Pa's malady was a benefit for our family, 'cos we always had good meat! The Wurst Kitchen is German, of course, but I recognize the same ethic and care in their stuff. Now not EVERYTHING in their case is home-made, but even the imports are chosen with care. There are about a zillion kinds of brats, all good. Take your pick, you can't go wrong. A few caveats-The Andouille tastes like a bunch of yummy things, none of which are the familiar link of the Big Easy. It's a good sausage, just not a traditional Andouille. Same for the Italian Sausage--but then again, you're not going to find a traditional brat at any of the joints on Harlem Avenue in Elmwood Park! If you're a fan of the bar/convenience store treat "Slim Jims" then scope out the W.K. "Wurststix" in a variety of flavors. This is the real thing, folks! A bit more expensive than the common link, but worth it. Perfect with a fine German bier. In fact, EVERYTHING in this place is begging to be washed down with lashings of Teutonic brew! If you've got the stones, make sure to try the Head Cheese, Sulze and the different "Blütwursten" or Blood sausages. Your courage will be rewarded with some of the best sandwiches you'll ever have. The grocery items that are displayed are mostly German or Eastern European. Fabulous Mustards that compliment the meaty goodness, and pickled stuff that does the same job. Pick up a bottle of the Curry Ketchup and try it on your next burger--trust me on this one. I'm throwing 4 stars, because as good as this place is, it's got a ways to go before it reaches the my Gold Standard of Bobak's, or Joe & Franks, plus the width of selection is not that great. In the same breath, it's Aurora, and the neighborhood is more "Olé!" than "Jawohl!" You wouldn't expect to find a Chorizo shop on North Lincoln avenue, would you? In any case, stop here and load up-the smell of the place alone will make you think its time for lunch. It's not cheap, either-but you get what you pay for, and at this place, you really get your money's worth! read more

My overall experience with Wurst Kitchen was very pleasant from customer service and of course the sausages. We ordered the spicy Moroccan lamb sausages, Jack Daniels brats, and the garlic sausage. They were fresh. Even the frozen Moroccan lamb tasted very very fresh: quite impressed. The hostess was very knowledgeable about the products and the history of the store. I was searching on Yelp trying to find a local meat market and happened across all the great reviews for Wurst Kitchen. What an experience. I tried 3 different types of Brats... SO FAR. I plan on rectifying that and trying as many as possible. The taco brat is out of this world! Their original was very flavorful, the kicker wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be so I need to go back and try the cherry bomb (4x hotter that the kicker). I've been coming here for the better part of a decade, and I've never been disappointed with the quality of the brats that I've purchased. They are so much better than the big name national brands, that it's not even funny. I even prefer them to the famous ones made in Milwaukee - AKA brat central. I like it spicy, so the kicker brats are the baseline for me, but I picked up some A-bombs this time around to see how they treat me. I'm saving the F-bombs for my next visit to see if I drop one when I take a bite. I stopped in for some fresh bratwurst and left with 12 plain brats and.... One $3.48 cent smoked - chocolate and bacon - brat. After putting much thought into whether or not to buy this expensive brat and playing 20 questioned with the woman behind the counter, I bought the one. It was suggested to me that eating it plain or with some honey drizzled on it was the way to go. The brat itself is smoked and only needs some browning up. Fricking delicious! I've had specialty brats before, but this one by far, is the best. I tried it plain and with the drizzled honey. Both were delicious...I even think some type of jam or jelly would work...the sweet with the savory. The chocolate wasn't as pronounced (not noticeable) as I was expecting and took a back seat to the bacon. I will be back with a bank roll for more! read more

Who knew this place existed?!?! Thanks to Yelp (and my GPS) - I found it! Upon walking into Wurst Kitchen, I knew I was in a good place. The cases are full of all types of sausage or as Anthony Bourdain says, "meat in tube form". Going in, I had no idea what to expect, I was just going to pick up some bratwurst for dinner. Well, I found some delicious Garlic Brats, a pound of some delicious smoked bacon, some Portuguese Chorizo, and I even found a lamb sausage with onions. There is a good variety of fresh and frozen so stock up when you are there. There is also a nice selection of German dry goods as well. Located in a semi-residential part of town, the Wurst kitchen was a little hidden to me. I could see how people didn't know it was there. I found the prices to be fair and reasonable.
