This is Disneyland for a FatGuy. I never took up tobacco, I'm a sensible imbiber of Alcohol, and but for a VERY few exceptions (and periods in my history) I wasn't drawn to recreational drugs. Lunchmeat and sausages, though... Thoroughly, positively, indubitably, and absolutely addicted throughout all of my 72 years. Mea culpa, pwned, signed, sealed, and delivered. (Yes I know that shit is NOT good for you or me; and I have, here in my dotage, adapted at least a smidgen of discipline in my consumption of said foodstuffs) But stepping into Reams is hard, my Brothers and Sisters, it's HARD. Temptation in the air, from the butcher shop aroma; Temptation in the eyes, from the never-ending displays in the cases, Temptation in situ from the beckoning samples placed like land mines throughout the store, and the myriad namecards everywhere you look. Temptation to cross gluttony off the "mortal sin" list, or at least create a scheme to take a parcel of fresh Bratwurst to one's next confession; slipping it to the padre hoping the penance is to leave the Mustard off the links for a week or two. I won't even try to describe the treats in store. There's just too much. And it goes beyond charcuterie. The steaks, the chops, the prepared meats. All top top quality. There's condiments, baked goods, wine and beer, even stuff for your dog. Want weird stuff? Offal and innards? It's all there. Seafood, too. And if you're one of those guys (like me) who dig "sausage stix" and Jerky, their home-made offerings are nonpareil. Ditto for their home-made potato salad-type thingies. It wouldn't surprise me to find a dozen Grandmothers fixing all this shit up behind the back wall. Here's another example: In the West Burbs of Chicago, the Czech butchers always had Daisy/Crawford Praszky for sale-It's a tasty Garlic juggernaut halfway between salami and summer sausage. Oscar Mayer WISHES they had something tasting this good. It's a Chicago Staple you'll never hear of through all the chatter about Hotdogs, Italian Beef, and Deep-Dish Pizza. Maybe it didn't get as far North as the Kosher neighborhoods, but on the South and west sides...oboy. Imagine my surprise when I saw Ream's version sitting almost hidden on the very bottom row of one of the cold chests lining the Southern wall. I've never seen it elsewhere, except for the echte Daisy/Crawford version. I thought it was a proprietary thing. Welp, here is Ream's iteration. I saw it while I was in line, and as I already had a cart full of custom-cut stuff, I didn't add it to the haul that day, but the NEXT time we're in deepest Elburn, I'm SO there. Every theory has a corollary, and I was disappointed to learn Ream's quit making their excellent Head Cheese. Yes I know, "head cheese" is on the "fear factor" list with Anchovies, Limburger Cheese, Czarnina (q.v.), and Haggis; but IYKYK, this is a significant loss. Oh well. And about that "it's not good for you" thing: Yeah, there's a lot of fat in sausages, but I am without doubt Reams has no truck with nasty chemicals, or cheating the recipes to add bulk in the name of profits. I'm also pretty sure they're using the best quality sources and the best cuts to make their stuff. Ream's is WAY the fuck out there in the far far far Western Burbs. It isn't quite Eastern Iowa, but it may seem like that during the journey there. And if you're looking for a bargain, shop at Aldi. If this was an Auto Dealer, they'd be selling Mercedes, Audis, and Lamborghinis. Make sure you have some free limit on your cards if you come out here to shop. It also is certain you will buy MORE than you planned to. Mark my words. Then again, Distance and price be damned. If you demand pure excellence, You pay the tab without a gripe. But when you make a sandwich, or pull one of their steaks off the grill, or have a snack of their heavenly Pimento Cheese on a cracker; or shook a bottle of one of the boutique sauces on who-cares-what, or took a bite of a Brat with SERIOUS "snap"... You'll smile quietly knowing you got what you paid for. Perhaps more. And THAT is a rare occurrence in these days of "interesting times" read more

I don't come here often, but when I do, I'll join the droves of people gathering around the Meat Counter waiting methodically for your number to be called, Yep, it's a 'cattle call' for those willing to throw 5 Stars for a slab of Beef or Pork with 'Steakhouse' prices. Reams is like a grocery store for just meat. After hearing about Reams for most of my life, I finally decided to check out this location as I was in the area The location is very easy to find. Parking was plentiful, and I entered the building not knowing what to expect. When you enter, you can see this is a just a different but amazing place. They have freezers with meat, deli cases with meat, fridge with meat, and more deli cases with meat. There are other non-meat like cheese, desserts, and bread. For my visit, I bought some Braunschwager aka: liver sausage. The flavor was very good.. but yet a little strong for my taste bud. However, I would still rate it top 10 that I have ever tried. Jerky dip was delicious. It was very easily spreadable and a little sweet. Wagyu Tallow was in the end of the fridge aisle. I will have to test this out when I smoke some brisket or something. Overall, the prices were very reasonable especially given today's-inflation prices. I am a huge fan and will return in the future to try more stuff. Especially the jerky! read more

Have heard about Ream's for years now but was never able to make it out so I was happily surprised to come across it while taking the scenic route home from DeKalb this past weekend. Although the prices are definitely a step up from regular grocery store butchers I can see how the quality of the products and especially meat being offered justifies the expense. Even the ready made sandwiches in the deli case looked really good. The jerky in particular is a must try if you're a fan. We got the Bloody Mary, Biltong and Spicy and they all were delicious. You get the real sense that you're in a specialty grocer while walking around Reams. While you will find a few everyday options and brands that are available in pretty much any other store it's the large selection of in-house prepared frozen and fresh food options as well as items such as candies and pastries from third-party vendors that you'll probably be more drawn towards. The workers are friendly and efficient which is nice considering just how busy the store was and it is also worth noting that the interior is noticeably clean and well taken care of despite the heavy traffic. read more

This place is awesome and worth a stop in! We came after a day in st Charles and beat the evening rush crowd. They are open til 6 during weekdays. Parking lot is on smaller size. Butcher shop with all kinds of sausage, bacon, meats, cheeses, and jerky! We got steaks, jerky, ground beef, and the jerky dip! Yes- they have jerky dip! My husband had to try it and he liked it! Everything you can need and more! I've heard of Ream's Meat Market from some old coworkers but never got a chance to visit before today. I loved the way the market was organized into sections so that it helped disperse the crowd so one doesn't wait too long. You can choose if they wanted prepackaged meats or fresh from the butcher. All prepackaged items had ingredients, price, and expiration date listed on it. Most products offered were by Ream's but they also had other local products from DeEtta's Bakery, Elburn Popcorn, etc. Items that intrigued me the most were their award winning jerky/bier sticks, (5) homemade bacons, endless sausage flavors, and specialty items like soups, sausage gravy, quiche and more! Prices were all very fair. There's a reason why so many people come out to Elburn for Ream's and why they have been in business since 1954! read more

I love this place so much! Best bier sticks or just meat sticks I've ever had. I love there bacon especially the Hungarian bacon. They have everything you can imagine there. From meats to hotdogs to Kiev and everything in between. They even have local baked goods inside and beers and whatnot from more local people. It can get really busy especially right before the holidays but in my opinion it just shows how good they are. The workers work smoothly and efficiently without being rude. They are really nice and are willing to help and answer your question. It take me close to an hour to come here but it's worth it. read more

I've tried the boudin. I was thrilled to find some here in N. Illinois. I was a bit disappointed though. There was not a lot of flavor. To me, boudin is a sort of dirty rice sausage as it should taste of pork, pork liver, spices with some heat, all set into a foundation of rice (in sausage form). This boudin was tightly packed and rice forward with minimal meatiness and no discernible heat. I still congratulate them on making it but I'd like a looser texture and a higher meat and spice content. I made some jambalaya with the chicken andouille I purchased - it was fine, nothing extraordinary. They were out of pork andouille when I was there. I'll be back. read more

This place is smoked meat heaven. The beef jerky is delicious. The beef summer sausage sticks are delicious. My semi picky kid couldn't get enough of the beef sticks. They have a fun selection of jerky's and sticks. They have smoked bacon, pork chops, so many brats and sausages. We picked up some taco and gyro brats, Bloody Mary jerky, Midwest jerky, kabobs, chicken andouille, preseasoned chicken breasts (which were absolutely phenomenal grilled), we bought some over priced flatbread (will not make that mistake again), and some other items. BEST BEEF JERKY EVER. I traveled from Niles to Ream's based on a friends recommendations for their beef jerky. He was spot on, this was the freshest best tasting beef jerky sticks I have ever had. They basically have a whole deli counter for their beef jerky alone. I really had to stock up since it is such a far drive, but the drive was definitely worth it.
