I've known Justin for 10 years. At first he was my student at the JC, but after watching him develop his Chinese language skills miraculously fast, and after reading his essays on Taoist thought & practice, I quickly realized that he surpassed my level of understanding and ability in numerous dimensions. Although he is several decades my junior, it was a very easy transition to move from being his teacher to being his student, because he is not only internationally renowned as a Wushu practitioner, he is also a gifted instructor. His cheerful manner and kind, humble personality draw people in, while he makes the most difficult mysteries of Qi flow somehow comprehensible. He strives constantly to fine-tune his explanations of the inner dimensions of the practice so that students can experience it the way he / a master does. So often martial arts classes are just basic movements with little explanation, with the proviso that it takes many years to master the art. True, but Americans often want instant gratification, and Justin manages to deliver it by providing us an understanding of the process, even to beginners. He makes it not just a physical training or a strict discipline, but a philosophical & almost spiritual inner expansion. 9/2/2012 I've been studying Tai Chi since ~1997. I've studied under many different "teachers" and schools, I first met Justin when we were both students with Master Li of Li's Kung Fu and Tai Chi Academy. I can say unequivocally that Justin is the best instructor I have ever come across. Justin is bilingual and bi-literate in Chinese, studied Tai Chi in its native language and with current living Masters in China. Justin has exceptional insight and understanding of the "intent" of Tai Chi basics and fundamentals from it's original texts and Masters. As a native English speaker he has the unique ability to translate this knowledge in terms we anglos can understand. We are truly fortunate to have Justin in our midst. There are very few individuals in the US (certainly not in China) where we would have access to this level and depth of instruction in our own native language. We can really learn and understand Tai Chi in its original form and then make it our own. Justin is by no means perfect... but then who is?? He is developing a business model that will best balance the delivery of instruction to a wide variety of age groups and busy schedules. I have been studying tai chi with Shifu Justin Eggert for about four years now. For the last 25 years I have been studying martial arts (and have a black belt in kenpo karate), and Wu Academy is by far the finest school in which I have trained. I have been studying with Shifu Justin Eggert since 2009, at SRJC, at Wu Academy, in China at Wudang Mountain, and in private lessons. Justin is the embodiment or a true shifu-a patent, skilled teacher with a profound depth and understanding of Qi, energy and practice in all its forms. I have enjoyed taking my study to the next level with him, and he is willing to tailor our private lesson time to my interests and abilities. His humor and good will have helped me though my training and inspired me to practice more and more as time has gone on. Yes, classes can sometimes start a bit late, or run over. However, I have been in _countless_ classes and privates with Shifu where extra time was given freely to help students perfect a moment, or to simply explain deeper philosophies. Sifu Justin Eggert is a phenomenal martial artist and an excellent teacher! Since moving back to Santa Rosa, I've started taking his Tai Chi class again and I love it. Sifu Justin is very thorough and teaches each movement from it's simplest form through differing levels of complexity. From practical application to energy theory, his instruction is comprehensive and easy to understand. The classroom environment is friendly and lighthearted, and very peaceful. My 8 year-old son goes to the kids class. He's been with the school for about a year. The sifu teaches with kindness and respect--always offering encouragement. There is never an unkind word. He motivates the kids to work hard and to try something that might be hard for them.
