I think I likened it to a $10 playdate where "working out" is normalized. GBSR was the choice for our family because it offers something other sports choices were not offering. They take children into the program as young as 4. They offer a whole hour of training, three times a week. Children are encouraged to engage in rough and tumble play through ideal practice scenarios that include learning a bjj technique, practicing it, sparring, and group games. So, for our youngling to have a safe place to participate in this incredibly human experience, it was an investment in her development - physically as well as psychologically that we couldnt pass up. What my child will get out of this is a workout routine that will be engrained in her mind. For the rest of her life she will know how to support herself to stay fit. I don't even know how you put a price on that.  Some take aways: +The facility is clean, linear, minimalist, and clean! +Physical activity meets or exceeds threshold for what my kid is comfortable with encouraging them to take risks. (Specifically the stamina it takes to workout after a whole day at school - kids can do it!) +Group games to cultivate problem solving and comrauderie.  +Instruction is age appropriate with lessons on techniques that are structured in a sequential manner that is meant to unfold and build on prior lessons.  +Professor Natalie conducts herself in a manner that is so respectful and kind to the children. The same for the coaches that help manage the class.

I bought a groupon for NCFA and I was a little hesitant to go just because I have done kickboxing…read morein the past and the gym I used to go to was so great and the people were nice and all I knew about NCFA was that the more serious MMA fighter dudes went there so I wasn't sure what the atmosphere would be like. Arrived for the class the first day and Dave came out to hand us our paperwork and his wife said to just go into the gym. Walked in there and wow it was hot! I've been in a dojo before but they'd have a door open to let air in but not this place. So that was difficult for me just getting used to the heat. I was there for women's kickboxing. There was a mix of girls, younger and older. Everyone was nice and welcoming. I felt comfortable. The coach started and from minute one to the end it was go go go! Holy crap I sweated like no other time! We started out with jump roping and some crunches, pushups, and jumping jacks. The "warm up" was like my normal work out. lol Then we got to start kickboxing using the bags. It was fun, I just had a hard time with the heat. I survived the class and it was worth it. I know I burned a lot of calories and over all had a good time. I have continued to go and as long as it is not a super hot day it's bearable to be inside. The class goes so fast you don't have time to think too much about how hot it is and you get to the end and it's a great feeling to have completed such a good work out! So if you're interested I would check it out to see how you do in the hot dojo. Don't worry about feeling intimidated, it's all girls and everyone is helpful to each other. Don't expect too much teaching on technique in the women's kickboxing class, only because it is more about getting a good work out in, and not about getting in the ring to fight. If you want more teaching of technique try out Elite Martial Arts. If you get stressed out easily, there's nothing like wailing on some punching bags!

Over the years I've experienced a wide range of training environments, coaching styles, and gym cultures--and I've been fortunate to find a few BJJ "families" where I truly felt connected. The places I've always stayed the longest are the ones where I felt genuinely welcomed and safe, while still being challenged to grow and improve. After being on and off the mats due to kids, job, and injuries, finding my way back to consistent training felt like a big deal. I'm happy to say I've found my new BJJ home at West County BJJ in Sebastopol. The coaches are skilled, thoughtful, and conscientious, and the training partners create an atmosphere that is both supportive and motivating. It's a place where you can learn, improve, and push yourself. I highly recommend West County BJJ for both beginners and experienced practitioners, of all genders.
