The Wroxall Abbey estate is a large and sprawling complex, just off the road from Knowle to Warwick. Approached by a long, straight drive, Wroxall Abbey itself is beautiful, with stained glass windows, a magnificent facade, and with a small church in front.
The hotel is popular for weddings (and who can blame anyone for wanting to get married here), with Wren's Chapel available and pleasant grounds and 27 acres of parkland for photographs. The parkland means that there are some mighty fit cows here too, as one kept pace with our car on the way down the drive last month.
The staff are friendly and helpful. On our last visit, we heard the wedding coordinator assisting a couple due to be married the next day, and were impressed by her attentiveness and concern.
There are two parts to the hotel: the old building, which was once the country seat of Christopher Wren, and the courtyard, which has a lovely clock tower. There is a spa here too, so you can have reasonably priced beauty treatments.
There are two restaurants, including Sonnets in the main building. They offer great value dining for special occasions including Christmas and New Year, plus a brunch buffet. The Brandwood Bar has a roaring fire in winter, wood panneling to make it cosy, plenty of reading material and fantastic sandwiches to accompany afternoon tea.
Definitely a hidden gem, and well worth a detour if you find yourself in the area. read more
