So, give yourselves some time. There are many restaurants in the area, so you can do dinner and a play easily! The theater is small, but it was clean, straight forward, easy to find everything under one roof. The lighting and the sound were pretty good, seating is decent, it's an older building so I heard the pipes making noise during the play. Otherwise, decent experience. Not a bad place to check out if you're a theater lover and want to support indie places in NoHo!

You have your choice of red one.... or white one... 3. The bathroom. It's like a technicolor jungle wonderland. It's painted in such a way that once you close the door... it's hard to find your way out because the door blends in with the rest of the walls. I felt like I was Alice in Wonderland! Dislikes: 1. Not much around the area in general before or after the show. I was told Big Wangs was not too far away... but I just wasn't feelin' it. Things worth noting: 1. Street parking only 2. Even though wine is free, other snacks are not. Nibbles cost about $2 a pop. 3. Get your tickets via Goldstar. You'll get mega discounts, I guarantee it.

The theater is tucked away in a quaint neighborhood, while waiting for the show to start, they had offered the guests wine, water and some beer. They only have two gender neutral bathrooms, so go early, or make sure you have plenty of time to spare in case there is a line. The play itself was simple but filled with so much passion. The actors were phenomenal, and filled the room with amazing charisma. The stage was but two crates on the floor, with no other props to aid the visuals. But even with such a minimalistic display, the actors story was conveyed in such a way that you don't need any more. I do admit there were parts to the story that had left me baffled, I would love to ask Cory some questions and see if my interpretation was correct. A great night, with a wonderful cast. The actors were so close, at one point the lead female actor was laying at my feet. The play was set in LA, in the not too distant future. They touched on modern life subjects such as dating, relationships, love, cell phone addiction etc., all whilst trying to survive an apocalypse. I laughed out loud a lot. And I truly felt like I was living in their Apocalyptic world. The cast were fantastic! Parking is available in a small lot adjacent to the theatre, however I got street parking no problem. Wine and beer is available for a donation. The staff working at this theatre were also great.

I can't believe we lucked into seeing this new Theatre Company's very first production. There was nothing rookyish about it. They are a polished group that carried off a topic with difficult themes, and did so in a highly unorthodox manner. Who would dream of coupling a serious play on the current financial crisis with burlesque and fire dancing? They made it work, flowing seamlessly from flaming hula hoops to Ponzi schemes. It's just great when a play defies categorization. I love it when you can't just tuck something neatly into a genre. There was singing, dancing, circusy stuff. And NO. This is NOT A MUSICAL. The writing was contemporary .... ripped from the headlines. The financial meltdown. It's tentacles finding it's way into every segment of society. Their treatment of it was anything but hurriedly cobbled together simply to make use of a timely subject. The heavy theme; what we owe to one another members of society, was not trivialized when garishly madeup caberet girls plopped themselves into splits, and clowns peddled the vast stage on micro-bicycles. The lead actors were quite outstanding, lending gravity to all the physical cavorting. Not a weak member in the cast. The dialog is dead on. Did anything bug me? Yeah. How could anyone with the capability of writing such a kick-ass play come up with such a lame title. "Even Yet, It's Mighty Daring Sings". No. That is not a typo. Damn people! If you want to get folks in the seats ... er .. couches, do something about that title Now to the space itself. It's absolutely enormous. They used the stage well. Movement is blocked very effectively. The industrial space is a wonder; quite unlike prissy pre-conditioning as to how one thinks of "The Theatre", (insert upper-crust British accent here). There are comfy couches scattered about, encouraging friendship and community, rather than .... this is MY numbered seat. The Theatre is located on Industrial Street, and it is indeed INDUSTRIAL. Those of you who have already ventured so far as to eat at the unexpectedly upscale Church & State, can just make your way a little bit further down the more desolate street. I understand this theatre company also offers an assortment of classes. I haven't taken any classes here. Can't vouch for them. It's a vast space. As you walk toward the stage, you can see it's partitioned into sub-studios for dance-yoga, perhaps music. Lot's of art work scattered about. Looks inviting. A great place for unexpected theatre.

He had posted the event on the yelp events page and advised everyone to bring a sweater or jacket as it can get cold. However, I wasn't cold. Although the building is very large and it definitely feels you're part of the stage, I can feel the enthusiasm and warmth emanating from the actors. The only nitpick I had was the acoustics can be bad. The show yesterday featured 1920s Chicago accents, not something I hear every day and I had trouble understanding some of the actors as the sound bounced off the brick walls. There is one uni-sex restroom for the entire theatre. Just be patient, this is community theatre! If you have trouble locating this theatre, it is just a block away from Church and State and Royal Claytons. The best way to get there is to look for Industrial Street from Alameda. Plenty of free street parking.

It's odd that in a city as known as being the world capital for entertainment! (with an exclamation…read morepoint, of course), theatre seems to still be something of a stealth exercise for many. I myself am a perfect example: 5 years in L.A., and a friend just started dragging me here. But maybe I've been too long around hipsters whose idea of a Friday night is a rock show and standing around looking "fashionably cardboard". Theatre Row Hollywood seems to be one of those places that everyone who loves theatre already knows about, but it doesn't roll off the tongue in the same way other L.A. attractions do. To that end, let the glorification of Theatre Row Hollywood begin! 15 (or so) theatres, on any given night (or day) showing comedy, drama, musical theatre, avant garde, etc. Best of all? People talking to each other before and afterward. A social element. Whew!

Western, within the boundaries, I think, of Koreatown. It's a nice (tiny) little space, but more importantly, I think Playwright's Arena has very quietly been doing some of the most important work in L.A for the past few years. Their current production (if you happen to see this in July 2007) is a truly wonderful play by the late John Belluso, a disabled playwright who was doing some of his best work when he died at an early age. His plays are incredibly smart, political, personal, and specific, and they can range from incredibly frightening looks at just how far around the bend caregivers can go, to PYRETOWN, the play that's up right now: Basically, a very clear-eyed, surprisingly unsentimental look at a very believable relationship between a 23 year-old quadriplegic and a 42 year-old single mother who's reaching the end of her rope. Beautiful. Unique. Theatre cut down to its essence: Great writing, great acting, nicely supported by simple and effective designs. Even if this extraordinary play isn't up by the time you catch it, you should just always go see anything Playwright's Arena does. They're doing the most consistently diverse (in every sense of the word) theatre, and no matter what your stripe, I think you're going to find yourself touched in ways no other medium can touch you. Check 'em out whenever they've got something up!
