Whenever in Carmel, I stop in to Wrath, one of my absolute favorite wineries, to taste and purchase wine. (running low on my favs) With COVID limiting our movements, it was so wonderful to sit outside and take in the sun while sipping on their fabulous Pinot. They do have Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, if you are not into reds. With many new tasting rooms popping up in Carmel you have many choices, but you want to make sure you get quality. You do not want to miss out on this top of the line wine! For $20 you have 3 tasting choices: Standard, Winemakers and Single Vineyard Tasting. I recommend that you try the Winemakers or Single Vineyard (one of each if with someone). Fee is waived with a $70 purchase; wine prices range from around $6.00-$45. I have been a fan of this wine for years. I find their Pinots to be full bodied, and they have 12 to chose from. Their vineyards are located near the Santa Lucia Highlands area, so their fruit is some of the best in California. The past few months we have tasted outside on the patio, and it makes for a great people watching experience while you sip fantastic wine. Their 3 Clone Chardonnay was a big hit with all of us, elegant, balanced, and great with cheese. The Pinot that seemed to make the biggest impression for its spicy finish was the 115 Pinot, although I also loved the earthy Pommard 4/777 as well. As for the service, Kathy was fantastic, so helpful, professional, and she knows the wines very well. The tasting room inside is small, so be prepared to get to know your fellow wine lovers, and dog lovers as well. The tasting fees are reasonably priced, 20-25$ for a flight of 5, and refunded with a 70$ purchase. When you compare these prices to both Napa or Paso Robles it is a great deal! read more

Honestly one of my favorite wine tasting rooms on the Monterey Peninsula and I'm not even a member of their wine club, although I should look into it. This tasting room isn't even located at a winery and we still had a very memorable time. The wines speak for themselves and the staff is uber friendly and very knowledgeable especially Chris (or Kris?)! We left with at least half a case of wines and Wrath accessories. My parents and I spent a great leisurely afternoon here trying a bunch of excellent wines. I can honestly say I enjoyed them all and that I Loved the majority of them. Wrath has the best Pinot noirs and such a wide selection. I have never had the chance to try so many pinots side by side and it was so interesting to notice the subtleties and earthy differences. 2012 Was a great year for them. Apparently 2014 was another excellent year, comparable to 2006, so I am excited to see what come out soon. Our hostess was wonderful. Down to earth, accessible, and helpful. The wine Baristas are engaging and Knowledgeable. I was particularly impressed with a young Barista, Carlee, who's wide smile and knowledge of their wine went well beyond her years. Each wine was described so articulately that it would feel like I was being transported to the middle of the vineyard to enjoy the fragrance of the fruit of the vines. This tasting room is great because of the friendly staff and the great wines. While not cheap, their single vineyard tasting was worth the money. I really loved their syrah and their estate pinot. The tasting room is spacious, and the bar is pretty big. They have so many wines here to choose from, something for every budget or palette, and the people pouring them were awesome. We came close to closing time and they accommodated me, which was really nice since I needed to unwind, plus I really wanted to try their wine! Our house, whose name I forget but starts with a V, and the manager-seeming young lady, and the gentleman who put on Led Zeppelin as they cleaned shop, were all very nice. For tasting room staff, these are the kind of friendly and energetic people you want selling your wines - not arrogant but not air-headed either. I felt like I learned a lot about their estate, and their philosophies. If you like central coast pinots, I can definitely say these guys are worth looking into, which is more than I can say about a lot of the other tasting rooms in Carmel by the Sea. read more

Although I arrived pretty late in the afternoon (just about 30 minutes before closing) they treated me as if I were the first customer of the day. The Pinots are really wonderful to drink; each with subtle differences and unique flavors. I loved the Ex Vite and the Pommard 4/777 Pinots. Make sure you ask to try the strange historical concoction Ex Dolio: a Falanghina fermented in clay pots like in ancient Rome. All around, a wonderful evening of delicious wines! read more

I visited the winery in Soledad a year ago--a truly gorgeous setting--and fell in love with the wines. So when I was in Carmel recently, the Wrath tasting room was my primary destination. Had I known the area better, I would have parked in the Carmel Plaza parking garage rather than get stressed looking for parking in downtown Carmel. Let's just say I was more than ready for a glass of wine by the time I made it to Wrath. The tasting room was surprisingly spacious with both bar and lounge seating areas. I had the entire place to myself, and Amy was very helpful and informative. I opted for the basic tasting, but since there were other bottles open, I got to taste one or two extras. Although I remember loving the Chardonnay last year, this time around I preferred the Sauvignon Blanc, a great summer wine with citrus and grassy notes, but a good acidity. At $19 a bottle, this was a steal. I liked both Pinot Noirs, the 2010 SLH and the 2009 Ex Vite, but could see drinking the SLH even on its own, while the EV would definitely pair well with a roasted pork or lamb. Not surprisingly, the 2009 Fairview Vineyard Syrah was also excellent. I ended up walking away with a half case: three of the Sauvignon Blanc and one each of the others. The fact that you get a 10% discount when you purchase at least 6 bottles made that a pretty easy decision. I even considered signing up for the wine club, but they don't have one. Their production is so small, they can't support a large wine club membership. So I did the next best thing and signed up for Wrath's emails to find out about new releases--and to be reminded that I need to visit both tasting rooms more often. read more

The Samba chardonnay was my favorite white wine, and all the Santa Lucia Highland pinot's were very smooth, peppery, and complex. Hard to find, it is hidden in the Tiffany's shopping center, down below, next to the French restaurant (also very good). Only downside is it is $20 to taste, and only refunded with two bottle purchase, which are around $35 to $50. Out of all the wine tasting rooms in Carmel, Wrath is definitely top of the list for me. They have a great selection mostly composed of reds(currently). The wines are all very unique. I will say most are phenomenal, if not complex and intriguing which makes them worth trying once. I couldn't resist taking home a few bottles of the pinot noir 115/667, it needs a mention! My visits have all had the same pourer, Rachel, who has a particular tact for making everyone enjoy their visit here. There's definitely a sense of some southern hospitality. To no surprise many of the tasters I've spoken with here are returning customers, which I assume is a reflection of having a great product sold by great people for a great experience. We were so impressed with the Wrath tasting room. We arrived at about 4:15 on a Sunday, so closer to closing time. My husband and I were happy that there were only two other couples in the room, so we got nice personalized service as we chose the Pinot flight. The service got even better when Chris, the General Manager, we figured, arrived and took over our tasting. He brought out a map and showed us the different growing regions in the area. He told us great stories about the vineyard's history and values. We were so impressed with both the service and the wonderful wines, we ordered a case to be shipped to us at home. Visited a few years back and had the following amazing experience. It starts off when we arrive and are told that the tasting room is closed due to the annual members only event. Sad faces... Then, someone else comes out of the tasting room and sees us all sad faced, and says to us,"hey, we can try and do a tasting in here, this should work". Proceeds to open the door to the barrel room, allows us in and says "I'll be right back, let me go get some bottles of the wine they're drinking inside". So, we proceed to do an impromptu "private" tasting. And the girl who made this happen goes all out describing the wines, the wine making process, the history of the winery, and everything. Then it gets better. She says "You know, inside the tasting room they have a special menu thats been paired especially with these wines. Let me see if I can get some food for you guys". She takes off, leaving us inside the air conditioned barrel room with the cat that lives in there, and she returns a few minutes later with three dishes. They were: watermelon with basil and balsamic, salmon with tomato, and large coconut shrimp. Amazing. Best wine tasting experience ever. read more

Our third and last Winery we went for our wine tasting trip on Mother's Day. It's in the plaza above our parking garage ($3/hr) and they don't validate here, but they do validate next door at the cheese shop. There seems to be construction in this plaza but it doesn't obstruct the tasting room. We walked in, without any appointments, and the employees were friendly and seems like they were having a good time. We took pretty much the whole bench with 5 people, but there were still a few bar seats available as well as a table that was occupied. There are a few options for tastings. For $10, you get to taste their set of 4 wines. For $20, you get either one of the 2 presets they have or have them choose 5 wines for you. We opted for the latter. Their wines are more towards the drier end. I didn't really like any of them since I don't like drier wines. An option is to check out their selection and then head to the cheese shop next door. They are plenty of wine tastings places around Carmel as well! read more

Great friendly service and dog friendly too. We came in after an afternoon of doggie play at Ocean Beach. Felt so bad because the doggies shed sand all over their clean floor. But the server was pleasant and assured me that it happens all the time. They even gave them doggie biscuits. After settling in their comfy lounge chairs, we were served with different pinots ( what they are known for). They do grow their own grapes, but they also buy from other wineries such as McIntyr and Boekenoogen. So it is interesting to compare their wine with those from the other wineries. We enjoyed their wines very much, but I think I still prefer Boekenoogen. However, we bought 4 bottles because they were extremely nice to us and our doggies and their wines are lovely. read more
