And both the beef and the pork fillings were oozing with flavor. The beef almost tasted like a french reduction or something, very rich. The Short Version: Venezuelan restaurant with tasty but…read moreexpensive food. Lunch cost $70 and we were still hungry. The Long Version: This place is highly rated and raved about on many platforms. It's only open for breakfast and lunch and is very popular with locals. We tried to go the last time we were in Halifax but they were closed for vacation or something we didn't expect. Anyway, I was excited to try it this time around for lunch. I got the Pabellon plate ($24.50) and my husband got 2 empanadas, a pork one ($9.25) and a beef one ($9.50). I got a bottle of water and my husband got a Jarritos (the mandarin flavour). I'm not sure how much the drinks were but with taxes and tip our lunch came out to $70, which I thought was expensive for what we got. So I later saw locals asking for a pre-chilled bottles of tap water behind the counter and they had clean empty glasses near the hot sauce bar. I wish I knew this before I paid for bottled water :/ Anyway, my plate looked like a lot of food, but it didn't really fill me up. It was white rice, black beans, queso, 4 pieces of plantain, 3 triangles of a cut up arepa and a pile of shredded beef. The beef was tender and full of flavour. The plantains were crunchy on the outside and a bit softer on the inside. The arepa pieces were a bit crispy on the outside. The rice was soft, as were the beans. I mixed the beans and cheese with the rice and it tasted good. My husband's empanadas were good (I had a bite). The outside was crispy and the inside had tender meat and melted cheese. They were small for the price. I'm used to paying up to $6-7 an empanada, which I thought was pricey already, so I found $9+ for an empanada very expensive. I'm guessing the drinks totalled $7-8, which is a high mark-up. I suppose the meal would have been more affordable if I got the bottled tapped water like the locals did. Wish I had known. You order at the counter and pay. They give you a sign with a number on it. You seat yourself and put your numbered sign on your table. When your food is ready, they bring it out to you. The place was packed. I know it was all locals because everyone was in business casual attire and had their work badges on, lol. (It was a Thursday lunch and the place is surrounded by office buildings) Service was pleasant and the wait for the food wasn't too long considering how busy they were. Street parking only. On to the food -- My spouse ordered seafood chowder and said the broth in particular had tremendous flavor. It was filled with haddock, 2 scallops, 4 mussels, and a bit of lobster along with potatoes, carrots, celery and onions. A tiny biscuit came with the chowder, which was a little disappointing. I ordered the scallop and pea risotto which offered an explosion of flavor in every bite. The creamy risotto came fused with mint and a dotting of fresh peas, and the 5 scallops topped with crème fresh and mini radish sticks and fresh pea pods added texture. Service was spot on, and since we did not have reservations yet were the first to enter when the establishment opened in the evening, the staff graciously gave us a 90-minute window to enjoy our meal. When I returned the next day to report the incident and request a refund, the store manager (Yamac) was extremely unprofessional. While the initial food safety issue and Yamac's terrible response were unacceptable, Nic's intervention shows that leadership does care about making things right when problems occur.

The Short Version: Popular restaurants that makes their food…read morefrom scratch and sources ingredients locally. Tasty food and friendly service. The Long Version: My husband and I had dinner at The Wooden Monkey and we enjoyed it. I always prefer organic and locally sourced ingredients as they are fresher and as a result usually taste better, so that's one of the reasons it was on our list of places to try. I initially wanted the haddock burger and was thrilled to hear that their bun (which they bake in-house) was a plain bun without sesame seeds or poppy seeds. However, our helpful server, Angie, informed me that the breading for the haddock contained sesame seeds, so I had to order something else :( My backup plan was the Fish Cakes ($17.50). The default side is "roasties" which is their famous roasted potatoes, but Angie recommended a side salad instead since the fish cakes contained potatoes and it would be a lot of starches without vegetables. This was a great suggestion. I did want to try their roasties so I got the half salad half roasties upgrade (an additional $5) and chose the Sweet Apple salad. My husband got the salmon ($29.25). He chose roasties as his side, but his salmon automatically came with some roasted vegetables too. My fish cakes were good, but I felt there could have been a bit more fish. The potato to fish ratio was high. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I liked the homemade tartar sauce. The roasties were seasoned potato wedges. I liked the thin and crispy ones. The thicker and softer ones, not so much. However, my husband gladly ate them, lol. The Sweet Apple salad was delicious (Angie said it was her favourite when I was deciding on that one or the Beet salad). It had mixed greens, apples, carrots, daikon, goat cheese, walnuts and green onions. The dressing was a maple mustard dressing, which I requested on the side and it arrived as requested. The ingredients were fresh and I really liked the flavours of the salad. There was a tiny bit of coleslaw on my plate too. It was good (vinegar instead of mayo based) but was only a tiny mouthful. My husband enjoyed his salmon. I had a taste and agreed that it was great. My husband also got a beer (Propeller pilsner $9). The restaurant has a monkey motif so the decor is full of monkey stuff. Angie was a fabulous server. Friendly and attentive and helpful. They have indoor seating and patio seating when the weather is nice. Street parking only. Review #127 (2026)
