Hidden Gem, this little restaurant was cozy, inviting and the food was great. We had the avocado dip, the weissworst and to top it off the Butterscotch de la creme and it was to die for. This place was straight out of a movie, Spanglish or Its complicated, definitely going back again.

Wonderful experience. Fantastic customer service and an all around enjoyable experience from atmosphere to flavorful dishes. This is a spot you don't want to miss while visiting the Netherlands. Thank you for all your suggestions and the wonderful meal.

Pied de Cochon. Amazing.

So this is a tough one. Mostly, the wine and food was excellent. We tried the Goose Terrine first, ordered the Venison Sausage next and saved the decadent Pied de Cochon for last, which were incredible. But instead of the Venison, our server made a mistake and brought us Fennel Sausage. So now it's weird, because we say she's made a mistake, and she says ''Oh that's what I heard'', and we blink at each other. Being lovers of food in general and meat in particular, my boyfriend and I ask if it will end up in the garbage, because that's a shame and we didn't touch it. She says yes, she can't resell it. So we keep it, and don't particularly like it as it contains chicory which impacts the taste of the whole dish. What stings is that we're not offered a glass of wine or a coffee or even a cookie in compensation, which just reinforces the "horrible Dutch service" stereotype, which is a shame. So we're frustrated with the whole experience. I'll leave it up to you as to whether we are fools for eating food that we neither ordered nor enjoyed, or whether the staff could have done something to ensure our happy departure, but it sure left a mediocre taste in my mouth.

Pricey, high quality food and wine. Great and friendly service. A bit cliquey, but still friendly to newcomers.

Since it's my favorite place, I looked it up on maps and saved it. When I was there a month or so later, I was riding my bike in the afternoon and saw someone sitting near the front window working on his MacBook with a nice glass or white wine. I immediately slammed the brakes and parked my bike! Fortunately I had my MacBook so I could get some work done and drink some great wine at 4 PM (16:00 hours). Bottom line is you simply purchase a 20-30 euro card (or whatever you want) when you get there and can just choose from any wine in the restaurant. It's awesome. The notable thing is, the bartenders are wonderful and very helpful. They don't just let you fend for yourself, they assist you, give you advice, even free samples! Awesome place. Also, great food too! Try the oysters! They have bitterballen (of course) all day - then dinner and food all night. My favorite dinner place in Overtoom. Don't be afraid as I was the first time - when it was really crowded. Friendly and warm place - gezellig!

The wine menu is embarrassing for an establishment that calls itself the 'wine factory'. That said, as long as your goal is to just have a good time with your company, you will not be disappointed. Just make sure that you ignore wine suggestions by the staff! I didn't have much good luck with a suggestion the first time, so I just ordered something safe the next time. To their credit, they let you sample a wine before you have to commit to paying for it. The menu has a bunch of foods for consumption as well. I didn't try food, but the bowl of nuts was nice with my wine. I am going to try the cheese platter next time. The place does get crowded on the weekends. Although there is a seating area upstairs, I much prefer the easy access to the restroom and the bar downstairs. It does get very loud. The staff could maybe help by not breaking something every 15 minutes. All that said, they also have a heated outdoor seating area, which is mostly blokes getting their cigarette smoke on. Maybe a solid 3 star venue, but an extra star for clean toilets.

The chicken was juicy and vegetables were tasty. The cheese board was huge with a nice selection of cheese. The pretzels were hot and buttery . Jeez people these reviews are so we (WE) can find good restaurants and weed out the losers. So adjust your behind, turn down your hearing aid and read the rest of my review. I had brunch at De Gouden Reael today with two friends. It was a spectacular day (yes, I realize I am reviewing the weather), but we sat inside anyway. This place defines cute, the staff were all smiling and extremely attentive, the atmosphere was charming and we haven't even gotten to the food yet. I wasn't in a drinking mood but my friends were. One started with a Bloody Mary which he proclaimed to be the 2nd best he had ever had. When he ordered a 2nd my partner decided to order one but he was curious if they could add some Clamato Juice to make what they call a "Caesar" in Western Canada. The waitress immediately knew what he was talking about and the two slightly different drinks arrived in short order. Now let's get to the food. Amazing variety of selections for a Brunch. Not that there were dozens of choices but the range of choices was across the board. From a French dish called Poutine to a breakfast burrito (but not your average burrito) the selections were unique and each one had it's own distinct personality. They even had Artichokes on the menu and since my partner (soon to be husband) is an Artichoke whore he ordered one to go with his meal. This is where the rubber hit the road as far as I was concerned. I have prepared a lot of Artichokes. I've learned to cut them in half and remove the "Choke" so you can eat them down to the heart and then just dive into the meaty remains without dealing with the fuzz. Somehow this chef had figured out how to remove the choke without cutting the artichoke in half. The center of the artichoke had a glass ramekin inside with the dipping sauce and the top of the heart was exposed and absolutely free of any fuzz. Everything about it was so perfect we commented to the waitress how amazed we were and a few minutes later the Chef himself showed up at our table with an Artichoke and walked us through the process of preparing the perfect Artichoke. For $4.99 plus shipping I will pass along this information (Just kidding). It's actually simple to do or at least he made it appear so but it's too much to go into this review. So, to wrap this up, here's what our experience was today. Cute restaurant in a charming waterfront area. Fantastically trained staff all warm and friendly and attentive. Unique eclectic menu with delicious food, and according to my friends "great cocktails", When the Chef leaves his kitchen and comes upstairs to your table to share with you one of his cooking secrets that speaks volumes as to the "attitude" behind the business. It has been my experience that good service starts from the top down. That pretty much explained why the staff was so fantastic because they were being led by example, not intimidation. I've been coming to Amsterdam for 30 years. One of my oldest friends married a Dutch guy and they live in one of those beautiful old canal homes. I used to make it over here twice a year but things change so it's every few years now but Amsterdam will always be on my list as long as I can make it over here. Stay out of the Tourist Areas and, by the way, this restaurant is not in what I would call a "Tourist Area", get to know the Dutch people and their culture not just the inside of a "Coffee Shop" in a pot smoke haze. Think what you want about the women in the windows with the red lights, keep a constant eye out for the bicycles and now the electric cars; both capable of ending your vacation in short order, and when you're hungry, stop into De Gouden Reael and experience a restaurant that truly has its own heart and soul.
