They Had Jack - 'nuff said…read more... SITREP My cousin Rikka and I wanted whiskey. SETUP I found this store. Simple to find. It's on the main drag of this town, just a few blocks from the hotel we were at. The "Liquor Store." Yes, pretty generic branding, but not out of the norm in a town that also has a restaurant simply signed as "Eats" and also a furniture store called "Furniture Store" a few blocks down. [Creative names don't abound here. They should call it "El Liquor Store" just to kick it up a notch.] She paid for it (I LOVE HER). Probably a few bucks more for a fifth than what I usually pay in Seattle or she pays in L.A. (minus 1-Star), but what can you do when you are hundreds of miles "deep into the stix." [I already had the mixers back in my room.] So there you go. [Some transactions are painfully simple and don't require "fluffy linguistic skills" to relay the ambiance of a room, or the presentation of an entree.] CONVENIENT FOR THE WRONG REASON I should also say that we came back here a second time when we were at the wake (for our uncle Jack - no relation to Jack Daniels) across the street at the Elks Lodge from El Liquor Store. I still don't think Rikka's dad or my mom (Jack was their oldest brother) knew of our little trek to spike our soda's and those of so many grateful cousins.... and our parents are not yelpers... sooo... *crosses fingers*... THE LOWDOWN We wanted Jack Daniels, we found it, and we got it in St. Maries. During a moment of high emotional need. [I'm sticking with that too.]

Then we had the chilaquiles and the loco moco. The chilaquiles were non-conventional, the "chips" seemed baked and it was more like crispy tortilla strips with lots of sour cream and an egg on top. The Loco Moco was really good and had really buttery gravy. The food came out pretty quickly! Order at the counter and grab a number. The service staff are polite.

We were hot on the pursuit of the whiskey just released from Spokane's Dry Fly distillery. The…read morestate liquor website said this location had twelve bottles--the last in the state!--so we made sure to time our trip to the east side of the state just right so we'd make it here before they closed. And we made it! Only to be informed by the bored/cranky worker that they did not have said bottles, never really did since they were all spoken for before they hit the shelves, and that the website is always wrong. The Christmas decor more than made up for the disappointment. Picture a fake cardboard fireplace pushed against the wall, and curled up in front of it a cozy little porcelain kitty cat. Not at all creepy. Now, I haven't been to too many liquor stores, but this was by far the smallest I've ever seen. Kind of nice, actually, as long you don't need anything specific. You certainly won't have to wait in any lines.

My husband had the roast beef on sourdough and he said the bread was super fresh and amazing. They made me a salad with the sandwich fixings and the young girl did such a nice job on it. She cut everything up like a chopped salad. We also bought a container of watermelon cut up in bite size pieces which was a welcome addition after a long ride. The park in front offers clean bathrooms and very shaded picnic benches. The views were spectacular. It appears many locals stop here for quick groceries and beer. I'm adding a photo of my salad after I ate about 1/2 of it. They have soft serve ice cream too but we did not partake. We will stop again as the trail is amazing.

A selection ranging from nine dollar fifths to higher end hundred dollar bottles. Two main registers here. Not a huge store but they are quick to check out patrons. This store does a great job suggesting brands you may like when given an idea of what you like or have purchased before. They also keep the shelves stocked but don't sacrifice register or general floor customer service. On a Friday or Saturday night it'll get busy but otherwise it's generally dead. They also have several coolers with Fireball and Jager cold so that's a plus if you go directly to an event from the store. State store so the hours are not awesome but the prices are fair.
