Was recommended to go here and stopped by on Saturday when they take walk in's. They have quite the selection, with various colors and styles. The lady who assisted me got the style I liked asking with six out seven others in my size to try on. Talk about giving options. I'm happy with my purchase. The shoes are good quality, made of good leather, and look good for a long time, which is why I again purchased them at Worldtone, but there is a problem with the suede-like material on the bottoms. It come off. I've had to reglue the material on at least one shoe of each of the three pairs I originally bought. The service was great. The saleslady put up with my finicky desire to get as good a fit as I could, trying on different styles, adjacent sizes, and different withs of each. I had a surprisingly good experience. I'm still a relatively novice dancer, about 2 years into salsa and bachata classes. I had joined my school's performance teams for both, and needed both black and nude colored strappy sandals for the costumes. I initially ordered 2 pairs of a brand that I'd had luck with in the past online, but 6 weeks later, the shoes had not arrived. With just over a month left until the dance performance, I went into Worldtone in hopes of a small miracle as I didn't have time to wait for anything to be shipped. I arrived at a scheduled 5:30pm appointment time, and walked out 90 minutes later with two pairs that were exactly what I needed in terms of color, style, heel type and height. And both pairs were on sale!!! The shop is relatively low-key. It's on the 2nd floor of a commercial building, and looks directly into a dance studio across the street. There were 3 separate seating areas, where I set down my bags while I surveyed the shelves. There's also a sizeable square "dance floor" area to test out the shoes. The women's shoes are divided into low-end, high end, and a "last chance" clearance rack. I found the first pair, black strappy Anna Kern sandals on my own in the "last chance" rack. Having found nothing suitable for the nude pair, I told the sales associate what I was looking for and she brought out six options for me to try on, one of which (a pair of Rummos) was exactly what I had been looking for. Unfortunately their product quality has gone downhill. I used to love this store because of their big selection. I bought a pair of Diamant shoes here 8 years ago that are still functional and comfortable, but starting to look ratty. I recently bought another pair here; the soles peeled off the new model after 2 hours of use. I also spent big money on a pair of Werner Kern shoes that appeared to be well made, with nice leather and a solid, cushioned insole. Those lasted longer--a few weeks before the soles peeled. The store offered a free repair--no refund--but the soles peeled multiple times and I was left with defective shoes. read more

We had that poor girl going back to that room every three minutes but she was such a trooper! In the end we came out very happy! She was very personable and knowledgeable. Came to this place based on Yelp reviews and am pretty happy! I was looking for my first pair of shoes for latin dancing (salsa, merengue, bachata, tango etc.) and knew there would be a steep price to pay for comfortable shoes since I plan on dancing a few times a week for a few hours at a time. I used to dance when I was little (middle school) so I had no clue what kind of shoes I'd be looking for other than I wanted a medium sized heel and open toed shoes. There is no street level sign other than a laminated sign on the front buildings that tells you to dial a number if the door is locked (feels a little like the Matrix...). A woman at the register asked if I needed help and I told her I was a beginner/novice and she directed me to the sale shoe area and lower priced shoes starting at $135 and below (ouch). Highest shelves contain the highest size heels and then goes down from there. I tried on several pairs in varying sizes (6, 6.5, 7)--if you're looking for dance shoes, unless you're buying a pair in the same size of the same brand you've already worn you really need to do this. I can't imagine buying online and praying that they'll fit! I went home with a pair of 2inch heels and decided I wanted higher heels after spinning around in my apartment. Went back the next day, and no muss no fuss I tried on shoes with higher heels. Just as I was going to exchange them, one of the women at the register who wasn't helping me directly told me that they had the same brand/similar style in a higher heel, which I hadn't paid attention to. Turns out I liked them even more than the ones I had picked! Also I price checked after I bought them, there was NOT a crazy price difference it cost just about the same online after shipping! TL;DR: they have a good selection, the pricing is seemingly expensive but worth it and I had a good customer service experience! read more

World Tone gets 3 stars for its selection (of dance shoes)...the largest I've seen in one place. They have well known brands like Freed or lesser known ones like Supradance. There's a wall of sale shoes that are on sale either cause they are the older model or they're banged up...you'll find the same shoe there for the full price. It's carpeted and they have a little dance floor like space so you can see how they'd feel in "real life". When shopping for dance shoes, if they hurt, don't buy 'em; if they're falling off, don't buy 'em; if they're too tight, don't buy 'em! You may have to try on a million pairs til you find the ones that are right for you...yes, this is like searching for the glass slipper! So why didn't World Tone get the full 5 stars? BITCHY sales staff!!! Very know-it-all and rude...one guy told me I better go get surgery right away on my feet cause the shoes they had hurt me. Uh, no honey! I get the complaints about high prices and bitchy service. But, that's sort of missing the point. You're not buying overpriced shoes. You're buying a ridiculously underpriced, expert consultation on which shoes will make you a better dancer. I probably tried on a dozen pairs of shoes here before finding the ones I loved. The saleswoman asked me about my level of experience and dance style before bringing out several pairs, then encouraged me to describe exactly what wasn't perfect about the fit and feel before bringing out my next options. She had tons of information about how to deal with my particular fitting challenge (feet that are a half size different), and encouraged me not to buy any shoes until I was certain they were perfect. Will I buy every pair of shoes here? No, of course not. But I'll buy here whenever I need a new style or a fitting refresh, and happily pay the small price premium to know I've got the right pair. read more

First off I decided these are all just so unattractive and for the price, I could not justify it, and more-so none that I tried on seemed comfortable at all. That being said if you are looking for a dance shoe I can see the reason one would come here. I do agree everything seems over priced. The girl who was helping me brought me the wrong sizes 2 different times and seemed quite flaky. I bought shoes in this store numerous times and they always have a good selection of my favorite brands. Had to come back here again after visiting the Capezio store on Broadway and finding nothing in my size. This store had the same capezio flats that i wanted in all sizes. They had beautiful Diamant shoes with silver lining that i had to try on and they were so comfortable. Those are very expensive but you can wear them for a long time. However all those quality shoes are mixed in with other expensive shoes which are not well known brands and do not have any information on the inside where they are made and who makes them.They have a name but i dont think that is the name of the maker. Last time i bought one of those they did not last. Overall i would definitely recommend them because if you need dance shoes they got them in all possible styles. read more

Before I made the trip over, I called them to confirm they had the shoe I wanted which they did. I also asked what time the store closed and was told 7pm by the girl who answered. Just a note for any future customers, they don't actually close at 7pm. I was in the lobby at 6:43pm trying to get to the 2nd floor and they had shut the elevator down. I call them from the lobby to tell them I was trying to come up and was told they close at 6:45pm. So why wasn't I told this when I called before heading over there? And why would you not let me come up since I was already there? Bad customer service. And to add to that, I wasn't the only person misled by the "7pm closing time", there was another lady who came right after I did and wanted to make a purchase. I have been visiting World Tone for about 7 years now, and have been continuously frustrated with their high prices, strict policies, and rude staff. Unfortunately, all three persist because WorldTone is the only place in Manhattan that carries this kind of variety in ballroom dance shoes. First of all, their prices are ALWAYS higher than what you would find in other dance shoes stores, online, and even when buying directly from the brand. They say they offer a 10% discount to students (of universities and dance schools), but they have turned away affiliations from institutions and studios that they aren't familiar with. Then, they make several exceptions to the discount. The one that baffles me the most is that they designate certain shoe models as 'limited edition', which they sell at full price (grossly inflated as it is). For example, I bought a pair of shoes that were discontinued because the company made a better model (same look, but more flexible sole). They basically slap on a gold sticker that says "WTD limited" onto the discontinued shoe and say that it warrants a higher price without discounts. If the model is in fact inferior to current ones, which this shoe is, they should instead put it on sale. Special order items, even items that simply have to be re-stocked, are also not eligible for student discount. When purchasing from World Tone, be aware of their return policy. They charge a re-stocking fee, which in light of their high prices, is really unnecessary. While every business has a right to their policies as long as they are made known, there is something to be said for customer service, and this is part of where they fall short. You could buy a shoe, find out that you paid quite a bit for a discontinued item, and pay $10 to return it. Or you could exchange it for the updated model you originally wanted, which is not available on discount either because it has to be restocked. What should I do in this situation? Finally, there's the staff, which has already been mentioned here in another review. At times they have appeared downright stingy and impatient. Although, I have recently encountered two helpful new hires, of which I was greatly appreciative. I only wish there were more places to buy ballroom shoes in Manhattan. Until then, I will buy online or abroad whenever possible rather than spend my money and time at WorldTone. read more

Despite my better judgment I returned to this place because I needed a pair of practice shoes asap. I tried on a pair of Aidas, and it was the same pair that I told them last time that one shoe was half an inch longer than the other. After they had agreed that one shoe was longer, they clearly just stuck the same pair back on the shelf. Five stars for Worldtone for their in-store service in New York and follow up and delivery of a shoe made-to-order. Both my wife and I visited the New York store in July. Our first visit to New York, we are from Vancouver, Canada, we searched all over the city for dance shoe places. We found Worldtone to have the best selection and the best service. We visited the store two times before we bought shoes. Both times we were there for, at least two hours. A number of the sales people assisted us. We found everyone to be very patient and helpful. We each purchased two pairs of shoes. My wife was able to take her's with her, but mine had to be special ordered for delivery to my home in Canada. I prepaid for the shoes and delivery. My one pair came rather quickly, within two weeks and the other pair was just delivered, the first of January. The length of the delay was that the supplier had to be changed 3 times as the shoe and colour I wanted were unique. Worldtone kept me advised the whole time about the progress and challenges with the suppliers. They offered a full refund, if I chose, every step of the way. Because of the excellent communication and follow-up provided, along the way, I persisted with the order. The wait was worth it, the shoes are beautiful. They are a black patent toe and heel with a royal blue center. They match my royal blue tuxedo jacket perfectly. I brought them to my dance class, last Friday, to break them in, and the ooooo's and ahhhh's by the other class members were flattering. Everyone was impressed with the shoe. The final delivery came from the Los Angeles store and I was notified by personnel from that store about the progress. So I am impressed with Worldtone in New York and Los Angeles. Thank you all at Worldtone, I will gladly recommend your store, selection and service to anyone that asks. You also offer a very detailed website. I have had nothing but exceptional service from Worldtone Dance. I am a costume designer here in New York City and have been very pleased with all of my experiences. They carry a nice range of dance shoes for many types of performance. There is also an extensive stock to choose from that go far beyond your basic T-strap. But for me as a designer, the best service is that Worldtone has direct connections with their manufacturers and offers a lovely option of customized shoes. Custom dance shoes are very expensive and can take a long time to make. But with Worldtone you can customize the styles in the show room, picking from many different leathers or even bring in your own, choose heel shapes and heights, even mixing patterns from different shoes. Since the factory already has the patterns for every size, the time and cost are cut way down to less than half of the competitors for custom shoes. It was very convenient to schedule fittings for all of our actors, even one that was arriving later for rehearsal just went to their L.A. store to be fit. I was the associate costume designer for Rock of Ages both off and on Broadway and almost all of our women in the show have customized dance shoes from Worldtone. At the end of the day, the best part of working with Worldtone, is their staff. They are very fast, efficient, informative, and friendly.
