When you doom scroll, you come across many different places that are true hidden gems. Door To Nowhere, or Heigold House, is definitely an oddity and salute to the past. Some housekeeping, you know, things to know about this place. BE CAREFUL. This sits on a roundabout island with steady traffic. Be mindful to the traffic flow and businesses nearby (I parked at a nearby business off the road and walked over here). Be kind to the natural beauty that surrounds this. And most of all, be respectful. As I said, this sits on a roundabout with flowerbeds surrounding it. Whether you are facing front, as in looking at the front of the façade, or looking from the rear, please stay on the sidewalks provided. Take in the informational plaques as well. Built by Christian H Heigold, a successful stonecutter. Majority of the house was completed in 1853. Heigold was a master at stonecutting and completed the home with busts of Presidents George Washington and James Buchanan. Heigold was also a staunch opponent of the 'Know Nothing Party,' and anti-immigration political party and I would like to think that he built his house with all the busts was a big middle finger to those that were anti-immigration. This façade sat in what was known as the The Point neighborhood, which was favored by those that moved to the city from the New Orleans area. Once Louisville diverted the Beargrass Creek away from downtown, this place started to flood annually. Shifting people away from the neighborhood and then the Great Flood of 1937 happened. Slowly the city started buying houses and demolishing them. Ultimately using the land as a dump site. Then this façade was listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. Remained in that area which became Thruston Park. That is until a developer bought the land adjacent to this and build condos. They moved this massive beast, 70,000-pounds, across River Road to where it sits today.

In days of old it was believed to be cursed. It's believed that a local coven worshipped here. We have visited this site many times. It's a local flavor close to Central Park. They have onsite parking for free. This is a free exhibit. If you have time it's a stop along the Haunted Louisville Trail. When you come, and so many individuals come from all over to see this tree. Beauty of course is in the eyes of the beholder. It's beautiful in all its glory. It's still standing today. It's a celebrated tradition to see this . Chickens, yes chickens and the steps that they used to take!…read more Originally, according to local lore these stairs were for the chickens that ran around in the neighborhood at large . Sometimes it's all in a name. Currently they have no chickens in the area. Now prior, this was a civil war holdup that proceeded to protect the area. Not a canon was fired from this strong hold position. It's great that these steps have a purpose for today connecting a neighborhood together. In the past it was where troops gathers anticipating an attack on Louisville. The idea that it's a heavy fortress is not ideal for today and our way of thinking, but its connection to the past tells our story. Remember your history! And this is a perfect place that has been incorporated into the narrative of the day to keep a connection open between neighbors while celebrating the past .

I had heard good things in past years and I couldn't wait to get to experience it myself! Louisville Swig is a party to remember! Or...since it is a repeal day party with more liquor than you could even imagine and very little food...if you aren't careful, it could be a party you can't help but forget! Lol! So prepare before hand with some pizza or tacos or something to help keep you upright with all the boozy offerings. And put those ride share apps on your phone to good use! There was seemingly endless entertainment, with more to see around every turn! Just past the first room with local beers...was a sign beckoning you to the speakeasy! In the speakeasy, there was not just Old Forester beverages...but also Hound Dog Press where you could press a postcard and live music and photo booths, Oh My! Making our way to the main room, we were pleased to see people with pizza boxes handing out Wick's pieces all around! What a great idea! And a tasty one too! We started to make our way around the main room, sampling the drinks that appealed to us (scotch! wine! Ballotin! Rivulet! champagne!). The main complaint I had, as with most events of this size and nature, is the dearth of trash receptacles. One only has so much carrying-in-one's-hand-space. I was always looking around for a place to get rid of my empties. The food that was available was great as well! BBQ, a mac & cheese bar, sushi, and sweets! I don't know if I could pick a favorite....but a build-your-own mac and cheese *IS* a pretty awesome idea! More live music, dancing, and gorgeous outfits donned by all...an exceptional party and a spectacular time! I was lucky enough to attend as someone's plus one at no cost to myself...but I would ABSOLUTELY buy tickets for next year's event! So many people dressed the part and looked great! We arrived right before the VIP hour started at 6:00pm. The check in process outside was kind of a cluster. We stood in line outside to have our IDs checked and wristbands applied but the staff were confused on the process. When we finally entered the event a staff handed us a ticket but didn't say anything about the ticket. I asked the staff upstairs in the VIP area about the ticket but she didn't know what it was for. We enjoyed the bourbon cocktail, champagne, and hors d'oeuvre's. Photo booths are my favorite and I was excited to see one there. Around 6:40pm we asked the upstairs staff if we could go downstairs to start sampling... she told us to go ahead and that everything was open to us. On our arrival downstairs the staff told us that we had to go back up to the VIP area until 7:00pm. I wish we could have had a small window to sample the food and drinks before the general admission ticket holders arrived. I really enjoyed the pork and broccoli salad from Martins BBQ. I had several of the chocolate martinis from Four Roses. I loved the little martini glasses that the chocolate martinis were served in. My fiancé enjoyed stamping his own ice with the roses stamp for his bourbon on the rocks. I was excited to see Titos there with two drinks. I tried the cranberry mule and it was very refreshing. I felt like the space was a little too small for the amount of people there. It was hard to navigate around people to try everything. On our way out we finally figured out where to turn in our tickets for the VIP bag. The VIP bag included 2 glasses and a set of Clayton & Crume leather coaster. Overall we had a good time at the event but I was surprised at how disorganized it was in it's 6th year. I would attend Louisville Swig event again but I don't know if I would pay full price for the VIP. I would definitely pay for the VIP if we had access to everything before the official event started. In a new city, in the midst of Midwest Kentucky. Remember…read morethis is Derby County and horses, right? They have defined culture deep within the roots of the city . A life size statue of David. Not thee David, and its gold. Wow!! We are in Kentucky too. This statue was procured by the local hotel, art gallery and eatery of 21c Museum Hotel . It's stands outside a large glimmer that looks out all over the city. It's very close to the water front area. Now the original David is made of marble, this statue although gold toned is made of foam and fiberglass. It's sprayed with a brilliant gold finish. It's well maintained with the rainy weather that occurs here. Come and see what downtown looks like with statues of David . Different and beautiful is nice. What's in your backyard of your city ? You might just be surprised!

Actually, at 30-feet tall, Louisville's David is almost twice the size of Michelangelo's original masterpiece in Florence Italy and it's all in gold... well, it's actually spray-painted with a gaudy gold paint... and made of styrofoam or fiberglass (not sure) but certainly not Italian marble LoL! The giant golden statue stands outside in front of 21C Museum Hotel on Main Street (who, btw, also owns the statue) which probably turns heads in downtown Louisville... the statue was one of many kinds of street art and statues on Main Street. It's widely suggested to not go on a weekend if you want to get in quickly. Once inside, the drive takes about 30 minutes. They have new, creative shows every year that appeal to all ages. The kids especially loved the Disney sections, and there is a very nice tribute to local first responders and police officers. Highly recommended for a climate-controlled holiday outing, who doesn't love to have their windows down to listen to Christmas music in the winter and not be cold.

A mowed swath on either side and then masses of natural wildflowers and pollinators. We were on the portion of the path accessed via a walkway behind Mike Linnig's and could have also chosen to take a side path all of the way down to the Ohio River if we had been so inclined. Maybe another day on another walk! We were walking on a portion that parallels train tracks, which ultimately crossed over the path, so it is possible to perhaps occasionally be waiting on the train to pass. We were also perched atop the bermed earthen flood wall, so the views were at a great vantage point to take in plenty of land and sky views. Occasional bikers, walkers, joggers, and runners but definitely not crowded and likely very underutilized!

Awesome and interesting public art attraction that discovered off a roadside America website…read more Located in Jeffersonville right across the bridge of my home in Louisville stands this 20 foot hub cap woman called "I am your Mother". Evidently sculptured in the mid 1980s. Really neat cool roadside attraction. It's a bit difficult to find. If you follow the address that's listed everywhere online you will just continue past the point where your gps says "you have arrived". Continue straight about a 1/4th of a mile and you will come to an intersection and will see her to your left. You can take a left and pull in that small alley and get out and checks out the sculpture and read about it and take advantage of the unique photo op. Really cool attraction that I had no idea existed. But now that I do I'll share the info with other locals and make more future trips here. Hopefully getting added on yelp will make this hidden gem not so hidden. Cool sight to see!
