TikTok really has opened my eyes to hidden treasures everywhere. I'm sure that I'm not the only one…read morethat feels this way. When you doom scroll, you come across many different places that are true hidden gems. Door To Nowhere, or Heigold House, is definitely an oddity and salute to the past. Some housekeeping, you know, things to know about this place. BE CAREFUL. This sits on a roundabout island with steady traffic. Be mindful to the traffic flow and businesses nearby (I parked at a nearby business off the road and walked over here). Be kind to the natural beauty that surrounds this. And most of all, be respectful. As I said, this sits on a roundabout with flowerbeds surrounding it. Whether you are facing front, as in looking at the front of the façade, or looking from the rear, please stay on the sidewalks provided. Take in the informational plaques as well. Built by Christian H Heigold, a successful stonecutter. Majority of the house was completed in 1853. Heigold was a master at stonecutting and completed the home with busts of Presidents George Washington and James Buchanan. Heigold was also a staunch opponent of the 'Know Nothing Party,' and anti-immigration political party and I would like to think that he built his house with all the busts was a big middle finger to those that were anti-immigration. This façade sat in what was known as the The Point neighborhood, which was favored by those that moved to the city from the New Orleans area. Once Louisville diverted the Beargrass Creek away from downtown, this place started to flood annually. Shifting people away from the neighborhood and then the Great Flood of 1937 happened. Slowly the city started buying houses and demolishing them. Ultimately using the land as a dump site. Then this façade was listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. Remained in that area which became Thruston Park. That is until a developer bought the land adjacent to this and build condos. They moved this massive beast, 70,000-pounds, across River Road to where it sits today.

Such amazing history, a must see spot ! Right off a main road but there is parking nearby !read more

It's in front of an apartment house, did not see anyone around. I took my photos of the tree. It actually just looks like an ugly tree, so knotted, tortured, and misshapen, but there were odd things that hung on the tree, mostly trinkets, baubles and bead necklaces of different colors. The story goes that in the late 19th century this tree was the gathering place for a coven of witches. The witches cast a curse on the town when the city cut the tree down ahead of the annual May Day celebration. Exactly 11 months to the day after the tree was cut down, a historic deadly tornado hit Louisville. During the storm, lightning struck the stump of the old witches tree and a new tree began growing there... not a pretty tree but this ugly tree that stands there now. So now locals of the community leave small tributes on and around the tree to keep on the witches' good side and to bring good luck. This is a stop included on the Old Louisville historic ghost tour. Please be respectful of private property when visiting. Review #3912

What a blast! A friend won a pair of tickets to Swig and…read moreinvited me to be her plus one. I excitedly said yes! I had heard good things in past years and I couldn't wait to get to experience it myself! Louisville Swig is a party to remember! Or...since it is a repeal day party with more liquor than you could even imagine and very little food...if you aren't careful, it could be a party you can't help but forget! Lol! So prepare before hand with some pizza or tacos or something to help keep you upright with all the boozy offerings. And put those ride share apps on your phone to good use! There was seemingly endless entertainment, with more to see around every turn! Just past the first room with local beers...was a sign beckoning you to the speakeasy! In the speakeasy, there was not just Old Forester beverages...but also Hound Dog Press where you could press a postcard and live music and photo booths, Oh My! Making our way to the main room, we were pleased to see people with pizza boxes handing out Wick's pieces all around! What a great idea! And a tasty one too! We started to make our way around the main room, sampling the drinks that appealed to us (scotch! wine! Ballotin! Rivulet! champagne!). The main complaint I had, as with most events of this size and nature, is the dearth of trash receptacles. One only has so much carrying-in-one's-hand-space. I was always looking around for a place to get rid of my empties. The food that was available was great as well! BBQ, a mac & cheese bar, sushi, and sweets! I don't know if I could pick a favorite....but a build-your-own mac and cheese *IS* a pretty awesome idea! More live music, dancing, and gorgeous outfits donned by all...an exceptional party and a spectacular time! I was lucky enough to attend as someone's plus one at no cost to myself...but I would ABSOLUTELY buy tickets for next year's event! With what you get just by being there...it is more than worth the price of entry! I hope I have the opportunity to attend next year!

So many people dressed the part and looked great! We arrived right before the VIP hour started at 6:00pm. The check in process outside was kind of a cluster. We stood in line outside to have our IDs checked and wristbands applied but the staff were confused on the process. When we finally entered the event a staff handed us a ticket but didn't say anything about the ticket. I asked the staff upstairs in the VIP area about the ticket but she didn't know what it was for. We enjoyed the bourbon cocktail, champagne, and hors d'oeuvre's. Photo booths are my favorite and I was excited to see one there. Around 6:40pm we asked the upstairs staff if we could go downstairs to start sampling... she told us to go ahead and that everything was open to us. On our arrival downstairs the staff told us that we had to go back up to the VIP area until 7:00pm. I wish we could have had a small window to sample the food and drinks before the general admission ticket holders arrived. I really enjoyed the pork and broccoli salad from Martins BBQ. I had several of the chocolate martinis from Four Roses. I loved the little martini glasses that the chocolate martinis were served in. My fiancé enjoyed stamping his own ice with the roses stamp for his bourbon on the rocks. I was excited to see Titos there with two drinks. I tried the cranberry mule and it was very refreshing. I felt like the space was a little too small for the amount of people there. It was hard to navigate around people to try everything. On our way out we finally figured out where to turn in our tickets for the VIP bag. The VIP bag included 2 glasses and a set of Clayton & Crume leather coaster. Overall we had a good time at the event but I was surprised at how disorganized it was in it's 6th year. I would attend Louisville Swig event again but I don't know if I would pay full price for the VIP. I would definitely pay for the VIP if we had access to everything before the official event started. Thank you to Yelp for my tickets to this event.

I would say that the UnFair needs to find a bigger location, but the location -- Mag Bar's backyard -- is such a big part of the event. But to take a step back, for those who are unaware, the UnFair is the smaller cousin to the St. James Court Art Fair. It's a rebel, a renegade, and seeks to showcase local artists who maybe don't have the hundreds of bucks to fork over to be a part of the big show. Plus, there's something so damn-the-man about thumbing your nose at St. James by holding an art show just outside its boundaries, like it's saying it doesn't need to be declared "art" by the St. James organizers to be shown in Old Louisville during the first weekend in May. That spirit is a bit of what makes Louisville so "weird," and while I very much appreciate and enjoy St. James, there is a definite place for the UnFair as well. And as for the items at the UnFair, they run the gamut -- everything from paintings to tchotkes to prints to scarves to artistically mutilated Barbie dolls to Star Wars-inspired and KFC-themed art. I'm still sad I didn't get the painting of Colonel Sanders' likeness on the side of a fried chicken wing. It's an experience to take in all that this small area includes, and you can find some great deals if something tickles your fancy. There are also some picnic tables in the middle of the space, and if you're lucky, you can find a great place to sit out for a few minutes. Plus there's always Mag Bar, just a few steps away, ready with a cold brew. The UnFair is not to be missed!
