They claim that the period starts when they receive the firearm from the out of state seller. This is false. Per the law the waiting period begins from the date you purchased it. Second, they lied again when they told me that days that they aren't open don't count towards the 3 days the law doesn't state that in any way. Finally and worst of all, when I went to up my firearm they weren't even open when their website and their posted business hours said they were. I called them the next day and their excuse was they closed early for a banquet. I asked if they could stay open 15 minutes late so I could pick up my firearm since they closed early the day before without warning and they said no. That is terrible service on top of the lies. Save yourself time and money and go elsewhere there are other FFL's in the area that don't treat customers like this.

I've been to Jay Henges Shooting Range several times, and until yesterday I would have highly…read morerecommended it. The pricing is great ($5 per hour per lane), and in the past I found the staff helpful, though very rule-oriented, which is understandable at a shooting range. Yesterday, however, was a completely different experience. It was my 19 year old daughter's first time shooting a gun, and she was already very anxious. Unfortunately, what should have been a positive introduction turned into a stressful and upsetting experience due entirely to one staff member. When we arrived, we rented two lanes -- one for my daughter and me, and one for my minor son (16) and an adult male friend. Everyone except my daughter had been there before. When we got to the lanes, staff member Bruce began questioning us. I explained that it was my daughter's first time and that she might need some extra help because she was nervous. Instead of being supportive, Bruce immediately became aggressive and started yelling. He then went over to my son's lane and escalated further, getting into my minor son's face. The adult male with us asked him to please back up and be respectful. Bruce responded by getting into the adult's face and yelling even louder. We asked to speak with a supervisor. Bruce followed my friend to the office and continued invading his personal space until the supervisor finally told Bruce to back up. By that point, my friend was understandably upset and chose not to continue shooting. My son shot a few rounds, but the situation had already soured the experience. Thankfully, another staff member later helped my daughter calmly and respectfully, and she was able to learn how to shoot for the first time in a supportive environment. That staff member was professional and deserves recognition. It's extremely unfortunate because prior to this visit I would have given this range five stars and praised the staff. One person completely changed that. For a new shooter -- especially a young, anxious one -- being yelled at and treated aggressively is unacceptable. Be aware of who is working when you visit. Our experience would have been entirely different had we not encountered Bruce.

I have been through certification in a few states, but none has been as thorough as the training Dave conducts. Is it monotonous if you already know what you're doing, perhaps. But if, like me, you desire to always know the laws of each state, and you enjoy a good refresher, Five Rings Armory is great for the seasoned pro as well as the absolute beginner. Dave is friendly and well versed is all things "weaponry" related. It is obvious that he takes great pride in making sure his students understand the safety and precautions necessary when handling firearms. Once on the range, he and his team are meticulous and measured to ensure each firearm is secure and that each pupil does what is necessary for certification. Five Rings offers courses at different times for different skill levels and has an accessible facility and parking. All of scheduling information can be found on the website. I enjoyed the weekend course which included a mix of skill levels: some professionals and some beginners. If you wish to get trained and certified to carry a firearm, Five Rings Armory in Carbondale is the place I recommend from personal experience. When you sign up, tell Dave that Kindra Speech sent ya! Okay, there are a ton of bad reviews and some overly great reviews. So let me be honest about this…read morerange: First, Prices: If you want to buy a gun, whether you're a first timer or a veteran, don't buy them here. You can find the exact same guns for sometimes $100-$200 less online than you could here. Which isn't their fault. Buying online means not having to pay a salesman who tries to sell you the gun. So, the prices are justified for where you are buying it, but I would personally never buy a gun from here again (I bought Mossberg shotgun here, found the same gun, brand new for $180 less...oh well) The range here really isn't overpriced. I've been to ranges in Missouri with roughly the same hourly rate and ammo is of course WAY more expensive from the range than it is reloading or even buying in bulk online. I personally buy my own rounds by the hundreds or even 1000 a time because I save as much as $200 if I had bought the same amount at any range or even a store. Their prices are typical. Nothing outrageous; Next, Service: I've never had a real issue with service here. As matter of fact I've had some real pleasant conversations with the guys there, and have had hour long conversations without even knowing it. I really don't know why there are reviews talking about how rude the staff is. Now, I wouldn't say they are all the most socially conscious people alive. Some of the guys seem sort of introverted and might be the type of people who keep to themselves. However, they aren't rude by any means. Not that I've known. I only ever had one run in with the owner and he did seem SOMEWHAT overconfident in his knowledge of guns. This was back before I bought an ATI brand 1911 which he insisted would be garbage that would blow up in my hand after a few hundred or 1000 rounds...well after 1yr of shooting not only is it still intact but it shoots like it was bought the same day. Only issue I had was bad factory magazines but Colt magazines fixed that. Keep in mind that the ATI 1911 I bought online cost $250 versus their $1000 1911s. I should point out my ATI 1911 is a Philipine made gun so I won't recommend shooting this in competitions, but if you want this for home defense and only shoot it occasionally to practice then it's a great gun for the price. I always bring in my own ammo I buy in bulk to save money. I've never had an instance where anyone has stopped me or chastised me for doing that. I don't reload so I can't speak for the comments about taking brass home, but I have seen guys around me doing that and they never got chewed out over it; Next, The Range: It's okay. Not terrible, not great. Just okay. It doesnt have good temperature control so it's somewhat hot in the summer and cold in the winter so that's pretty annoying. There's only 3 spots for rifles/shotguns but then there's 7 for handguns. I mostly shoot handguns so it's fine for me. I do most of my rifle/shotgun shooting outdoors unless I'm shopping for a new one that they happen to have on the range. The controls for the target are pretty basic and it takes some careful attention to line up the target to the distance you want. The yards are written on the wall but you have to manually control when the target line stops so...close is good enough; Summary: I like this place. I go shooting at least once a week to practice with my Beretta and I am trying out some compact pistols for CCW. I won't buy one there but I can browse and try them out. I really don't understand who these ultra-rude employees are, but as of now it's 2019 and some of these comments I see are back in 2016 or even 2013. So maybe the problem employee(s) have gone somewhere else. In which case it's all the more reason to come here. One guy in particular (if I can remember his name I would say it here) with a big beard, about 6foot, his very friendly and engages with whoever he is speaking too. I watched him explain to a new shooter way single/double action is (because she wanted a 1911) and I lent him Berreta for a few minutes to help him out. He's a cool guy and certainly the most appealing guy there. He has a much better vibe about him which makes him easier to talk to. Anyway, I hope this paints a better picture of this place and what to.expect from it. It isn't the nightmare people say it is but it certainly isn't a shooter's paradise (but then again I don't even know what that paradise looks like).

So they decided I couldn't purchase the rifle. . . But the law is plain on its language of Illinois Dept of Corrections being able to purchase a semi-automatic rifle. Under Peace and Qualified Law Enforcement Officers. "Those section has also been amended to include Correctional Officers in Illinois, whether they be State or County". So for a gun business to pick and choose who gets to purchase by their standards an not by the standards of the law, let me know this business does not respect American citizens, the Illinois Laws and the Federal 2nd Amendment rights of an American Citizen. I will not patronize this business ever again. I drove to another gun shop that sold me the rifle with no problems whatsoever.

I brought it back in, and the guy at the counter tested the gun and said I need to be using 147 grain ammo. He said the problem was that I was using 115 and 124 grain ammo before. The first sales person didn't say anything about that, and I actually had purchased a 1000 round case of 115 grain ammo. I think there's something wrong with the gun because I did an Internet search and it said this gun has no problem with 115 grain ammo. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the gun and I have to use a hotter ammo to solve the malfunction. The original sales rep said if I have any problem with it just to bring it in and made it sound like they would take care of me. But the second guy who is extremely well spoken had me half convinced I need to use (more expensive) hotter ammo. I'm certain there's something wrong with the gun and now I have to call the manufacturer and deal with them. Update 6/27/25 (two months later): Shortly after my Google review was published, James, one of the managers reaches out to me. He apologizes about the employee that said I needed hotter ammo - he shouldn't have said that. He encourages me to bring the gun in and they take a look at it. Several of them shoot it, it works fine, but it jammed once while I was shooting it with them. They blame it on my grip; my grip is not tight enough so the slide can't operate properly. I'm thinking that can't be right -- I've worked with an instructor, a former professional competition shooter, and he taught me a proper two-handed thumbs-forward grip. I've shot all the major brand handguns, including high-end race guns like Staccatos, and I have never had a problem with jams. I insist my grip, while not pro-grade like these guys, is not the problem. I tell them I want to return the gun. I'm offered a meager trade-in, good for another gun or store credit. I expected they'd stand behind the product, as an authorized reseller for Canik, that they'd take it up with Canik, but they 'stuck to their guns' that the gun was fine, and they could not improve upon their offer. I decline their offer and say I'll send it to Canik. At this point, as if I had some really original idea to do so, THEY offer to send to Canik. Canik, who has a location in the US, still took the better part of two months to send it back to me (it felt like it was being sent off to Europe or something). Canik replaced the slide spring. I get it back, test it, it works fine. But by this time, I've lost my taste for Canik and this whole experience, so I want to trade it in, and get a gun that I've owned before and trust, a Smith & Wesson. I asked my point of contact there, Tyler, what it would cost after the trade-in and adding a red dot. I never did get a reply. I emailed Tyler and James a couple times, called a couple times, can't reach anyone. Ghosted. I feel that the way this should have gone down was that as soon as I had a claim the gun (under warranty), was defective, and if they were not able to fix it, that they should have offered to send it to the factory for repair. Rather than inconvenience and embarrass me, with claims I needed different ammo, or had a bad grip, they should have stood behind what they sold, and offered to get it resolved via the manufacturer. I will probably continue to tell people that The Range West is a top-notch gun range, but I would not recommend purchasing a gun there, as they don't seem to want to stand behind what they sell.
