Not sure what's happened in the kitchen lately but the last four times we've eaten there or gotten take out our food has been awful (overcooked and cold, incorrect, or missing ingredients all together) and the portion sizes have gotten extremely small. Annbriar used to be a bit expensive and a haul from St. Louis. However, it was almost always in good shape and the staff is usually friendly. Recently, several public golf courses on the Missouri side of the river must think they are something special. The rates have gone up and the courses have not kept up on 75% of our local layouts. Annbriar has been different. They've kept up the course nicely and their prices have settled in to slightly better than average for similar courses. Courses like Tappawingo and Aberdeen are not taking good care of their links but they are raising their prices. I'd much rather drive 30 minutes, pay $10-$25 less per round on a better course! Only minor critique is their younger staff need to be coached a bit on customer service. They guys at the bag drop are fine, but some of the staff working the bar / snack counter aren't rude, but it is clear, you're not their first priority. If you love a good golf design at a great price, head to Columbia and play Annbriar! read more

It is a beautiful course. Even during the heat it was in pretty good condition. The problem, there was a junior tournament in the morning which we were not aware of. There were no officials out keeping the pace of play moving so it took 5 hours to play. We would have picked another day to play had we been told. read more

My wife and I love Annbriar. We live just 30 min away and have played this fine golf course year round this season. It's beautiful and just puts a person in a good state of mind. Staff is great Took a lesson last Spring from Kevin he is a great instructor, pro shop people are always very welcoming. The food is great the steak sandwich and fries are highly recommended. I am lucky enough that I live a couple miles from this golf course and it is where I play league. The owners and staff are the best in the business! Do yourself a favor and try this course out, only problem is you won't want to play anywhere else. I am an avid golfer, but mostly a foodie and this place has awesome food! Waterloo is known to have great chicken at a restaurant called Gallagher's, but Annbriar's chicken is the absolute best around and fried chicken is my favorite food! Fried chicken is the Sunday special, so stop by and give it a try, you won't be disappointed. They also have best soups! Also, Friday evenings during lent they have the best seafood buffet around and even includes dessert! read more

Great links course! Greens are fabulous but difficult. Staff are great. The course is kept up very well and the fairways are in great shape.

Don't get me wrong this is a good public course that is for the most part very well maintained with a nice design. I have two problems with the management of the course however, especially so as their conceit is that they are an upscale public course. First, they try to jam so many golfers on to the course that the round was excruciating slow. I lost interest in my game around hole 12 or 13. Secondly, the management is not doing anything about all the loud music on the course. One group is playing country, next fairway over someone is playing hard rock. If people want to listen to music on the golf course put on headphones. The management should be controlling this. One of the worst trends in golf of late, people insisting on sharing their music with you. It was not a good experience. read more

The course is 5-stars for the area, 4 stars nationally. The clubhouse, however, is 3-stars at best. The bathrooms, even first thing in the morning, are filthy and aged. The sinks don't work. The faucets are loose or simply nonfunctional. The golf carts are decaying. Gas smell, ripped cushions on their seats. Definitely not cleaned and sanitized after each use. The pencils are used, and they don't insert scorecards on them -- apparently you have to ask for one of those! Not sure why they'd devote so much love and attention to the course, but drop a steaming dump on the clubhouse features. It's a nice course to play maybe once per year unless you live in the area. Not worth driving to frequently if you live in STL. read more

Drove over an hour to play. Heard it was the best course in Illinois. Worst experience ever.. Over booked , slow play. Took over three hours to play 9 holes Marshall was in parking lot not on Course. Group in front of us was playing from tips. Not one of them could make to the fairway. waited for the green to clear on a par five all of them duffed it wen to each other's ball while they hit. Not ready golf. 4-5 groups on a hole waiting. Noone ever told anyone to move along. kid in the pro shop was busy on his phone checking Snapchat. Unbelievable!!! Terrible experience!!!!!! Great course. The front and back nine are like two different courses. The front nine is a links style course while the back nine is amore traditional midwest course. The course length is perfect for the average golfer. Bring a few extra balls, the rough is long and if you hit into the tall grass you will have little chance of finding it. We have had a few events here and they do a great job with tournaments. Very difficult to walk this course with some lengthy walks between several holes. One of my favorite courses in St. Louis. If you have never tried it you need to go at least once. I think this is the best public course in St. Louis. read more

How did nobody get the scoop on this place yet. A hidden gem in the cornfields of Illinois, defiantly worth playing, no matter how far the drive. Annbriar's is known for making golf memories. The course favorites to nearly all who play. It offers superb conditions, super fast greens, beautiful scenery, and a tough competitive atmosphere. When you come here you always want to bring your A game. Always a fun, enjoyable, and memorable experience. The clubhouse is nicer than, most, and the service is a lot better than you would expect at a public golf course. The service rivals that of most restaurants. I could just continue to write great things about Annbriar, but it would be better if you just went to check it out yourself read more

UPDATE ANNBRIAR DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO MANAGE THIER TEESHEET OR WEEKEND TEETIMES. 5 Star golf course with 1 Star management / starter crew. Sorry but that the real talk. Booked 7:09 tee time as a fourth, show up early from 45min away. I confirm at checkin I'm with a group, right? YES. Players start rolling to the tee box and several 3somes go out, each time I ask if they're the 7:09, and they answer no. My teetime comes and goes and when I check back with the starter they say "oh your group was some members and they like to play fast, so you can just go out in front". Now there's 16 people on the course and I'd be racing out 3 or 4 holes - not cool. Weekend tee times should not have an option if there's singles - fouls should be paired up, and groups shouldn't be able to just roll out on their own when they know there's other players. I can shoot my +10 from the tips as easy as I can from forward tees, and no one is faster in the course than me. Next opening was 2hrs later, so I took my business over to Gateway National where they do know how to run the tee sheet.. Annbriar went from my absolute favorite, to now I'll never go back and that's a bummer.. This is THE BEST golf course anywhere within an hour of St Louis - SERIOUSLY! Course conditions couldn't be better - lush fairways, smooth challenging greens, and a gorgeous layout. Designer obviously knew what they were doing, and the grounds crew deserves a lot of praise for keeping this gem looking so good. There's a lot to look at here and I always enjoy coming back. Layout: Annbriar has an exceptional layout that changes in character over the course of the round. The front 9 begins with relatively flat holes lined by tall grass. Some might call this "links style" but it is not true links style but rather holes that do not feature large trees as obstacles. The second 9 routes through the woods. The holes have true character with many standouts. Some of my favorites are the par 5 5th (reachable in 2, risk vs. reward with tee shot over the water), the downhill par 4 8th (narrows to large sloped green), the par 4 13th (tricky tee shot to elevated fairway then short approach in), the par 3 17th (downhill, huge bunker on left, difficult club choice), and of course the par 4 11th (beautiful hole with elevated tricky tee shot). One design criticism that I have is that the first hole seems misplaced. Its an awkward tee shot on a short hole. Generally, my preference is to not have either a huge risk/reward first hole or a hole with an awkward tee shot. The 1st at Annbriar is a bit risk/reward but a lot awkward. The second hole would make a better first hole. Swapping those two (impossible of course), would be excellent. Overall, the design is excellent with memorable holes throughout. Conditioning: Always well above average. Annbriar gets a lot of play, but they always keep it in great shape, with fast well conditioned greens and well maintained fairways. Difficulty: Annbriar offers many sets of tees, including a very close set for women. A beginner would be significantly challenged here, it's not that I don't recommend it (you would certainly enjoy your round), but there are several holes that may be overwhelming. Intermediate and advanced golfers will be signifcantly and appropriately challenged. Value: Considering its the same as Pevely, Tapawingo, Gateway, and the Bluffs, its well worth the cost. You put this course in California or even Chicago and you are looking at double the greens fee, possibly close to 200. They also have good twilight rates as well as frequent deals on golfnow. Walkability: Would be very difficult to walk, it isn't encouraged, and no one does it. So essentially, not walkable. Scenery: It's in a cornfield in Waterloo, Ill, but seems like you are removed from everything, which is excellent. There are no houses and nice views throughout the course. Atmosphere is excellent. Practice Facility: Decent range, two practice greens with some short game practice available near the first tee. Acceptable. Annbriar is the best public course in the St. Louis area, and it's not even close. It blends a great layout with exceptional conditioning in a quiet and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. The only real negative for the course is that weekend rounds can be long, stretching up to and over 5 hours, which is unacceptable. This is mainly due to golfers playing the wrong tees (the first hole gives some people the idea they should be playing the tips) and going on excessive ball hunts. Almost without fail, out of towners are seriously impressed by the quality of this course. If it weren't tucked away in Waterloo, IL and a relatively new course, it would be considerably more well known, but probably a lot more expensive. In fact, I rate it ahead or at least equal to essentially all of the Golf Digest or Golf Top 100 courses that I have played. Annbriar gets a sterling 9 out of 10 rating. read more

A great golf course like this deserves an equally great staff to maintain tee time spacing and pace of play. Awful day yesterday, 3/3/18. Got there early and hit some range balls and was told repeatedly 'we're on time'. We went to the 1st tee box only to find 4 groups waiting. Not a foursome, four separate groups. No spacing between groups, no marshals to speed things up. Our 12:39 tee time turned into a 1:10 start and we finished 18 in the dark. We had enough time on the 8th tee box to walk back to the grill, get a dog, sit down and eat and walked back up to tee box and still had to wait. We became best friends with the group in front and behind because we spent so much time together waiting. Why would I drive all the way to Waterloo for this? It's a great course, but come on.... read more
