We knew she would take ice skating lessons but that was not enough. Enter GCMA. I happened to be driving down Haddon Ave when I noticed a sign offered a free trial class for kids. This was perfect, as we were not ready to commit to something out daughter might not like. So, we signed her up for the trial class. She was meek, quiet, and in need of exercise. Garaguso offered the opportunity to help with all of these things. Being a creature of habit and craver of structure, martial arts training turned out to be something she absolutely loved right off the bat. She's grown confident, came out of her shell, and is fully capable of defending herself. Moreover, Garaguso teaches the kids Korean, life lessons, and respect. They have a word of the month for each class, the kids things like honesty and respect. Today, they taught the kids a safe procedure of what to do if you get separated from your parents and the concept of a "safe stranger". We wanted owners that actually train themselves and hold current credentials, a staff to support those ideals and not only teach technique but also life lessons, and last but not least self discipline/self defense. My Mom works in Haddonfield and in Dec 2013 decided to purchase a promotional package to get our oldest son's feet wet into the martial arts subculture. When she went to the studio she was greeted by a young attentive gentleman who is a 2nd degree black belt himself and owns/runs the operation. She could feel it was a good match! Our son started a week or two later and that was basically the beginning of this path. He started as a super ninja and was exposed to all different techniques and lessons while also doing some fun activities at the end of every class! It helps that he actually is a "natural" which we have to thank not only my Mom but also the instructors for noticing it and also nurturing it. He is currently in solid color belts, the leadership program and STORM team. STORM is an amazing concept to endorse the color belts to take their training a step further and help the younger "ninjas" hone in on their training as on-site role models. This husband/wife team has really taken this studio to another level in this last calendar year. Mrs. Huver , having experience being a First grade teacher, joined the school full-time in the beginning of the summer. She just added a woman's point of view and assisted in tightening up the scheduling and planning. More programs have been added, they periodically hold special events/parties and demos, and they work together on the Dojo which is a great example of support for the children to experience. The decor in the waiting area is constantly changing and keeping everyone's interest. They have this awesome FULL WALL CHALKBOARD that they draw graphics to grab the children's attention but also convey all the information needed (belt testing dates, upcoming events, etc) We have recently started our 3 year old and he loves it too! Our two sons actually train at home together which is a great bonding experience for them. While my lil ninja is on the mat, his older brother is the STORM assistant which is everything a parent could dream of. When I first joined there was a deal going where you could attend 3 classes or so for around $50. I don't even think I had officially signed up for this online yet but the next day someone called me to connect. Eventually I did purchase it and went to the classes. Mind you, this has been my experience as an adult (there is also a lot of programming for children but I'm not familiar). But from what I've seen, if I had a kid, I would enroll them here. The place is definitely family friendly. I liked the structure of each 45-50 min class, it seemed to be divided into thirds where you spent a portion learning a new self defense technique, one portion learning a Kata and another portion doing HIIT (high intensity interval training) type work kickboxing style...with punches and kicks...i felt like I was getting an amazing workout. As I committed to the program, before you can get your white belt, you have to memorize a creed (it seems to be their creed as we repeat it in almost every class) and recite it in front of the class...Im an adult but I can see why this is included especially for kids to build confidence. Every few months there is belt testing to graduate to the next belt - you're observed on your enthusiasm, knowledge of the self defenses...and your cardiovascular strength...whew. That last part was unexpected for me and was definitely the hardest part. As far as building confidence, this seems to be one of their primary goals, encouraging you to be loud and high energy while also disciplined. They also have "lessons of the week". there are a few Instructors, all extremely friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful...also interestingly they are at different levels of their black belt journey and ages (actually I will say the group of instructors is very pleasantly diverse). The primary instructor, I believe, is Mr. C. I saw another review mention the "YES SIR/MA'AM" military style and being turned off by it, for me, I think it's cute (if you can call karate cute, lol) and I see why they do it BUT it can feel infantilizing at times, maybe it's because the instructors so often deal with young children...or perhaps it's just my personality. I believe the expect you to commit to 2 classes per week and they definitely mark attendance. Every week they send an email with the calendar of sessions and you're expected to sign up...you definitely get a check in text if you sign up for a class but don't attend. (they say the number of spots per class is limited but I've never seen them reach the limit). All in all, I've been enjoying my time and plan to stick with it. It does however seem like the class structure is changing a bit so there is less of a dedicated HIIT section and it's just woven throughout the class instead. I'm not a fan which is why I removed a star. I definitely feel like I'm getting less of a workout - this may not matter to some but fitness was part of why I joined. Also, as far as quality control goes, I definitely have a more robust experience with certain instructors over others.

When she tested for black belt it was a grueling 3 hour test comprising of all the forms and techniques she learned from the beginning on . She also spared students and masters and even had to create her own technique for testing. When she finished her black belt testing I was so proud of her. I saw her grow from being a shy little girl into a confident young lady who could handle herself in any situation, they even made her an instructors aide, assisting the younger students in the class. When she received her black belt they told her she's welcomed back anytime at no cost to train or assist the instructors. Some people may say negative things about a place because they didn't get their way. But Karate unlimited is the real deal if you want your child to be self confident and respectful and able to handle any situation.

My sister signed up there not knowing anything about McDojo's and got robbed for $900!!! She tore a ligament in her ankle kicking the bags there and couldn't continue. They would not let her out of that bogus contract. She had to get the police involved. Before she eventually prevailed, the company already hit her bank account several times (in a one week span) to the tune of over $900! They said she owed them $6,000!!!! Yes!!! You read that right! SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! She had only been there for 2 weeks!!! Furthermore, what makes this school a McDojo is they have belt test fees (no good school will charge you for a belt test!), children black belts (earning a black belt is extremely difficult! Something children should not be able to do!), black belt clubs (black belt clubs are pure money makers, nothing more!), and a few other things. I walked in today and there a very nice young woman that greeted me and instantly invited the girls to there first lesson. There is a large matted area in the back and there is a space in the front for parents to wait for there children. The charge is $80.00 a month per child, but if you have two you get a discount so it is only $150.00. You can come in for classes that are available all week, three times. They are open from 11:00-10:00 Monday through Saturday and Sunday open Mat by appointment. They offer group and private lessons. My girls just finished there first lesson and they loved it. They are wanting to come back tomorrow. I guess that is a good sign.
