The most genuinely encouraging humans in all of DC. If you want a challenging workout - this is your place. If you want modified options - this is your place. If you are scared to death and intimated as hell - this is your place. Ryan & Tina (owners) are kind and down to earth. Will and team (coaches) are amazing. They are all about safety (covid and not hurting yourself) first. Every day I walk in unsure if I can finish a workout - but every day I walk out not only completing the workout - but feeling accomplished doing so! I can't recommend this place enough. Disclaimer: I only finished the ORC course after 1 free class. I'm a super newbie and I'm totes out of shape. I will likely update this in a few months. I loved it each time. The overall vibe is so positive and uplifting. The people are welcoming. I didn't feel intimidated at all. If anything, I felt encouraged and supported. Will was my coach throughout. He's really thorough and a great teacher. You can tell he cares and wants to make sure you do the movements correctly and lift weights commensurate with your abilities. Let's not kid ourselves, I was smoked after the workouts... but it felt so good! I even surprised myself by being able to do new movements. The only downside to my experience is that the super cute dog made an appearance and we could only play with the puppy for a few moments in between sets. I will definitely be joining this place once my 3 weeks on ramp pass is over! I got my friend to join me in this journey also and, even if she took different classes, she's gonna join also. They must be doing something right! read more

Seven months ago, I had to have my first knee replacement at the relatively young age of 47. The doctors told me that, if I followed their rehab plan carefully, I could be back to pre-surgery mobility and strength in a year. After reviewing their plan, I realized that 1) It only worked the surgical leg and I needed a more comprehensive plan and 2) it wasn't ever going to get me back to pre-surgery levels as it was built for older, less mobile, people. I talked with Ryan at Workhorse Athletics and he agreed to work with me. He built a whole-body plan that allowed me to work on gaining overall strength and mobility while my knee healed and supported healing and strength-building in the surgical knee as well. We talk about nutrition, and he helps provide the guidance and accountability I need to eat better. We talk regularly about sleep, stress, hydration, and all the habits that help build a healthier lifestyle. His whole staff went out of their way to help making coming the gym easier for me...moving equipment for me, explaining exercise modifications, even switching the music to my favorites when I'm there. Ryan has been truly amazing to work with and, after only 6 months of working together, I've exceeded all of my pre-surgery fitness measures! I'm stronger, faster, more flexible, and pain free. I couldn't have done it without him and can't recommend him and the team at Workhorse Athletics enough. read more

This place is amazing. The coaches are top notch and the community is like a loud and loving extended family. With the support of CFWS and the expansive knowledge of the coaches I was able to exercise safely through my pregnancy up until 3 days before I had my child. When I returned from the hospital 2 of the coaches delivered a meal to my home. When I returned back to the gym 5 weeks post partum (with my infant) the coaches held my child while I worked out, changed her diaper, and even gave me a quiet place to feed her. Working out regularly is hard. Trying to do it while raising kids is harder. I am so very thankful for the support and knowladge CFWS has provided and I can honestly say this place is a family in all of the best possible ways. read more

I go to VA for work a few times a year and I've been looking for a place to get my fitness on when I'm there. I finally got over to CrossFit West Springfield and I was blown away by every aspect of my experience. From my first contact where I was greeted via email by both of the owners, to the solid coaching on the split jerk and WOD movements, and the incredibly nice and welcoming athletes, I had a fantastic time with CFWS. My only regret is that I was unable to go back! Joining Crossfit West Springfield has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am challenged daily to push myself all while being supported by an amazing coaching staff. They have worked with me not only on my fitness but they have helped me tackle the nutrition aspect as well. When they aren't busy coaching, the owners can be found grinding it out and doing the workouts along side you. Apart from the exercise component this place really is like family. The relationships you are able to build with the people you work out with is what makes this environment so great. They lift you up and encourage you on the days you need it most. The coaches and members create one of the best training facilities I've found in Northern VA! Each coach gave me great pointers to improve my technique and encouragement to help me build my mental stamina. Other members, specifically Kayleigh and Matt, immediately became great team mates by constantly inviting me to try new movements with them. Resulting in me discovering my capabilities. I'm new to CrossFit and CrossFit West Springfield is the closest gym to me and I couldn't be more thankful. The staff and coaches are incredible and the community of people who workout there are the best. I started working-out there in January and immediately felt like part of the CFWS family. I love this place! I was only there for 2 or 3 months but it was amazing. The workouts and classes are fun, there's an air of friendly competition and camaraderie among staff and gym goers. If you're just starting out cross for I really recommend it here because although I'm an athlete I didn't have a lot of experience and my coaches always had modifications just in case the move was too advanced. I unfortunately had to make the decision to leave because my work schedule was becoming too sporadic and I was no longer able to make those classes I loved how strong I was getting and how quickly I was getting there though and whole heartedly recommend this gym! read more

The CrossFit Workhorse (CFWS) gym is AWESOME! The owners (Ryan & Tina) are amiable, professional, and go out of their collective way to keep the members informed. It's the best communication I have ever received from a fitness center. The CFWS coaches (Ryan, Will O., Jason K., CeCe, and Ethan are incredible. I dropped in twice while visiting my dad and brother in the Springfield area. A little cold for a FL boy (12 degrees, really?), but I got a warm welcome and a great workout in a well-equipped and coached box. What a fantastic place and an even more fantastic group of people! I joined as a total Crossfit doubter and was turned into a believer. Ryan and Christina have created an environment that truly allows people of all fitness levels to excel. The entire coaching staff are both great athletes and experienced fitness professionals. My husband and I were looking for a new gym when our box closed in 2016. We were welcomed with open arms by the amazing coaches, owners and community of Crossfit West Springfield and couldn't be happier . They have a wide range of class times so we can both manage a daily WOD while having two young kids at home and crazy work schedules. I have been active in CrossFit all over the world since 2012 and I have been to many CF Gyms all over the world. There are very few that I have visited or was a member of that I can truly say match up to the caliber of CFWS! I was welcomed into the CFWS family from day one! I signed my children up for a kids only summer program and they absolutely loved it! They loved it so much that when the program ended they became members. As one who has been anxiously wondering whether I was up to the challenge of CrossFit training, I decided to join CrossFit West Springfield immediately after the trial workout. Earlier this year, I'd gone to observe another Box in the area but passed on it because I wasn't feeling the vibe. Nothing bad, just wasn't feeling it. After going to Crossfit West Springfield and taking the trial class with Rae, I was sucked in by her infectious enthusiasm and supportive encouragement to go further than I thought possible. She has a great story & I love that it's family owned and operated. I went from couch to CrossFit and clearly had no idea what I was getting into. LOVED IT! From the coaches to the members, everyone looks out for each other. The coaches will guide you as to where you should start and help you from there. The members are welcoming and provide pointers. Its an overall great community. I did 3 months and took a break due to traveling but plan on signing back up end of year. The ONLY negative feedback is there is a coach that tends to be on their phone a lot and since I need a little more attention as I'm not always sure I know what I'm doing, I just avoid their class. Great box with an amazing coaching staff. There are plenty of banners hanging from the athletes/teams that have gone to regionals over the years, yet they are all very humble and embody the spirit of the Crossfit community. The programming is great. They also offer additional workouts such as Yoga for Crossfit, an Advanced Class for competitors, and regularly host gymnastics and weightlifting clinics. The community is very tight. There are numerous social events at the gym and many athletes go out to local competitions to cheer on their fellow box-mates. CFWS offers a Saturday community workout for visitors and families. This is, and will forever be, my box. read more

I joined Crossfit West Springfield 6 weeks after having my second child. I Crossfitted in the past but took a few years off due to injury and having kids. I emailed the owner Ryan and immediately was welcomed into the family to try out the community and see if it was a great fit. Well it was an OUTSTANDING fit. All the members were introducing themselves along with the coaches my very first week. I felt part of the group almost immediately. The atmosphere really stresses form over weight (which I appreciated getting back into it). The coaches are fabulous. Everyone I experienced spent time with me one on one to focus on my flexibility and form. I would highly recommend this box if you are in the Springfield or Lorton areas! read more

I had to look back to find out how long I'd been a member at this awesome gym, 5.5 years and wow time flies! This is the first gym I've ever joined and will hopefully be a member as long as I can. Before joining, I literally had never lifted a barbell, I didn't even know what crossfit or olympic lifting was, and my understanding of exercise and nutrition was maybe going out for a jog a few times a month and more burrito bowls than I care to admit in public. The foundations class gave me confidence and a solid understanding of all the movements which are fine tuned every day during class by trained and certified coaches. Fast forward to now, this place has easily been the best part of my day every time I am able to go. I've gained skills and strength that I never would've thought possible (yes, gainz!). The gym is extremely well owned/managed and staffed with knowledgeable coaching staff, it is cleaner than my house most days, and truly is a community where you will meet and connect with other amazing people trying to be better every day. I joined Crossfit West Springfield several months ago and fell in love immediately, however my experience today prompted me to come and write this review. After three consistent months at CFWS, I got incredibly sick due to a bad flare up from my autoimmune disease and was out for the entire month of May. During that month I kept in touch with Coach Christina, let her know what was going on, and that I had to drop out of one of the team challenges we had been doing, which I was unbelievably disappointed about. Coach Christina was not only completely understanding of my situation, but also extremely encouraging - telling me to rest up and focus on my health and come back when I was doing better, not once rushing me or making me feel like I was slacking (even if I may have felt that way myself). It's always intimidating to start a fitness program, and while I had become completely comfortable at this box, I was nervous about coming back. I was nervous that people would think I didn't take my fitness seriously, or that I wouldn't be as strong and my movements wouldn't be as good as they once were. Despite all of that, I went in this morning and was welcomed back with open arms! Coach Donlin was right there with me, helping me scale my weights and working with me to re-learn techniques that will help me lift safely and effectively after my time away. I made it through the WOD and felt so relieved and supported being back in the box, knowing that this is a community that really cares about its members. I've been to other Crossfit's in the area - but this is the place for me. Grateful to be a part of a group of people who encourage others to do their best and listen to their bodies! read more

This is an amazing operation where Tina and Ryan have created a supportive and engaging family environment that encourage all who participate to reach their personal goals! Let just say I am a regular at this box and I adore every moment of being here, so I'm going to keep this review anonymous as much as possible. While I LOVE the crowd and management, I will have to say the coaches are a hit or miss. My BIGGEST complaint is that ONE of the coaches, Bridget, IS NOT CROSSFIT CERTIFIED TO TEACH, yet she does sometimes. That really bothers me because most of the movements are heavy compound lifts. Also, another coach Nick is always on his phone and NOT watching clients do their wod. Coach LaKia would also read magazines during the wod. It's just an insanely unsafe environment for somebody who may be new to crossfit. I was looking at one of the people who were doing their foundation courses of which one of the old woman in the group (Terri Jo) was squatting 200+ lbs with EXTREMELY terrible form. Her hips weren't low enough, knees were going in, back was curved upwards (like the bar was going to roll over her head), YET NO COACH said anything. In fact, there was no coach around that corner where Terri Jo was squatting and it was Lakia and Keisha's class. UNREAL. Other coaches: Matt, Jess, Rae, Bonni, Alicia, Melanie... were all very attentive. You can tell that the owners are in this business to help people, not to take their money when I saw them putting a girl's account on hold because she wasn't able to afford crossfit one month. Plus, they also have the BIGGEST box around this area, with the BEST price. I've been a member of 3 different boxes, and no one could beat the price at Crossfit West Springfield. Also, the hours are flexible, so classes are reasonably small-medium sized. Bottom line: go for it, the people are amazing here, but pick and choose your coach! read more
