As suburban rail stations go, this one is so-so. It is mediocre despite having a huge commuting community that uses it regularly. Accessibility, train frequency, and the availability of trains late at night are all weaknesses.
There are 4 trains per hour on Monday to Saturday roughly on the quarter hour. On Sundays and after about 9:30pm, it's just 2 trains per hour. Last train from Waterloo is around midnight, which will limit your late night London revelling.
Platform 1 is towards London. Platform 2 is away (towards Guildford, Dorking, Epsom).
Until they finish construction of a new walkway in 2014, there are NO accessible ways to/from street level at platform 2 (I.e., away from London). Two flights of about 10 steps each to get from the platform to street level. For platform 1 (toward London), there are just 2 or 3 steps and a kerb or 2 to negotiate. Probably reasonable with a buggy or wheeled trolley, probably harder with a wheelchair.
There's a coffee counter that's open in the mornings. No other shops at the station or particularly close.
