This 17th Century building has so much charm with its low, oak beams in the bar that you can't help but feel nice and relaxed. The staff add to the atmosphere as you can tell they all really work hard to make sure your food is out on time and you haven't got to wait long at the bar for your drinks. We had a brilliant Sunday lunch there a few weeks ago. It wasn't the cheapest but worth every penny. I had the roast pork and the crackling was perfect! With the open fire roaring, it really was a nice place to sit and relax when its hammering down with rain outside. I had to be dragged out by my wife!!

Having not been before, mum booked a table in the dining room but it was clear when we turned up that it's not necessary. I think you might need to book on Fridays or Saturdays, but during the week you'll be fine to just turn up. On this occasion, I was not drinking in preparation for the 10k, but next time I come I'd like to try the wine as the wine list did look good. Without trying the wine I could not go for a 5* but maybe I'll revisit the rating when I do try it. My mum had the saute chicken and my brother had the pork belly. Served with a generous portion of seasonal vegetables. Both were very satisfied and I think I'd like to try the pork next time. I went for the burger, without cheese. Living in Manchester, where there are gourmet burger places on pretty much every street, and there are some very very good burgers, I am hard to please in the burger department. Well this one was very impressive and I'm kind of glad I don't like cheese, as this would have been even richer with the addition of cheese. You'll see from the photo how generous a portion it is. The burger was homemade, and well seasoned. There were bacon bits in the burger which added a gorgeous smokiness. There were fried onions/mushrooms on the burger which were nice without being too greasy. On top of that was bacon jam - oh man the bacon jam! Lush it was and went really well with the bacony burger. The coleslaw was delish as was the onion relish. My mum pinched a few of the chips and she enjoyed them as much as I did. Overall, am very impressed and think anyone who enjoys burgers would enjoy this. There was a good atmosphere in the pub itself and the staff were friendly and attentive. It's only about 10-15 minute walk to the beach at Pagham and has lovely countryside. I imagine it must be a nice cosy stop off for walkers/ramblers in the area. One of the other people in the pub had a cute dog on her lap, so that's handy to know if you have a dog and want to take him/her with you to the pub. Overall, I recommend a visit.

Hot and runny venison scotch egg with pickled fennel was crisply delicious as was the chargrilled white asparagus, crunchy poached egg and Alba truffle mayonnaise, while haloumi also came crisply battered with a herb-filled dipping butter. A decent-sized plate of mussels was made more interesting with the addition of rice and chorizo in the broth, but the slow-cooked, smokey beef brisket was the star of the show, closely followed by some of the best triple-cooked chips ever eaten. A delicious rhubarb fool and some gorgeous ice creams including sea-salt caramel and liquorice completed a superb meal. The menu pictured will show you the prices. We will return!

Running an award winning inn in Vermont USA we have high standards and Emma who is front of house knows her onions, and Dotty her wonderful hairy companion was the cherry on top of the cake! The 2 rooms offered as accommodation are simple but very comfortable, but the bed we found to be very springy...which was not uncomfortable but unusual for us, as we are used to a firmer mattress. However we slept well, and also heard little noise from the busy pub downstairs. The bathroom had a great soaking tub as we were upgraded to the larger of the two rooms. To sum up: The breakfast was freshly cooked with a cracking local sausage and bacon on offer, but also on offer was a simple selection of fresh fruits, yoghurt and homemade bread, so we started each day well. I had dinner there one night with the bride and some family and we all enjoyed the dinner. In particular the homemade scotch egg and sardine appertisers were fantastic. Every dish was prepared with passion and William is a chef with creative and consistent culinary style at the top of his daily routine. The pub also serves delicious pints of ale...which I had to partake of! As we were there over a weekend the wood fired pizza oven was burning and my they make a bloody great pizza! So if you want a great meal, and want to consume a few drinks, book a room and stay over....you will not be disappointed!
