I knit and often use the website Ravelry.com to search for patterns and yarn. I selected a pattern recently and decided to use the same yarn as was shown on the website instead of trying to substitute something locally available because frankly, the item made was GORGEOUS and it was made with a yarn only carried by Woolbearers. I ordered my yarn from their website and was delighted when it arrived quickly at my home in Tennessee. I couldn't be more pleased and will certainly be giving them more business in the future. After visiting two other independent yarn stores in South Jersey today, I found Woolbearers. I rate it five stars, because Yelp doesn't go any higher. It deserves at least 10, especially when compared to other local yarn stores. First, it had an enormous selection of yarns to fit all budgets. Second, it carries several brands of needles, not just the one or two the competition stock. Third, the store is xoxo-full of kits, pattern sheets, samples, and ideas. Next, the person running the store was as helpful as you could ever hope to encounter - beyond fabulous. When I couldn't decide between two brands of needles, she invited me to sit at a work table, loaned me a ball of yarn, and let me try them. She didn't hover... just left me to knit. When she came over after a few minutes to see how I was doing, I had a question about a cast-on technique. She offered to show me. I left the store with the needles I wanted and as a better knitter. Woolbearers was voted the best Knitting Store in South Jersey for 2008 and I'll admit their selection is incredible and for those with yarn-pedophilia, they actually have the real estate footprint for you to meander and feel up the goods. They carry tons of yarn, needles, books, and back-issues of knitting mags, but the distinguishing features are really their classes and their affiliation with Meetup.com. While almost all knitting stores host classes, Woolbearers is the only one in the area that teaches how to spin fiber, machine knit, or work on a loom. I am always threatening to quit my job and buy llamas and angora bunnies to make yarn for a living, and if I take their spinning class, maybe that dream can become reality!! The knitting Meetup group for the Metro Philadelphia area recently disbanded and since nothing has sprung up in its place just yet, Woolbearers offers a nice place to network with other knitters in the South Jersey/Philadelphia area. I have a teensy, itsy-bitsy qualm, without which Woolbearers would have received 5 stars. My skinz are super-duper sensitive and can't mess with any woolly business. When I asked an employee what yarns would be good for my fiber allergies, she looked at me as if I had three heads, scissorhands, and vaginas for ears. This isn't really a unique condition and I felt she should have been able to better direct me to something appropriate. read more

The shop is packed with so many varieties of materials (various wools, alpaca, cashmere, silks, cotton, acrylic & blends) in various weights.... so many choices.... Knitters are a niche customer clique. If you are going there at all they know you are either already part of the "in crowd" or have an interest in becoming one of the knitters anonymous.
