It is also home to the old Scottish Rite Temple and is still used for small concerts, demonstrations, and ceremonies. The City of Miami Mounted Police Stables are located there, and you will see the horses bring exercised every week as you drive by. Tip: it is best and safest to visit by daytime.

One of the team members, Elise or Eli's was locking up the park and doing his search of the park and stumbled upon my wallet. Not only did I not know realize I left my wallet, but Elise took it into his own hands and searched the Aventura data base and called my house to let me know that I left my wallet. If it wasn't for Elise and the staff, I would never have known and would have been frantically searching the next day. However, Elise called around an hour after I left and made sure I retrieved my wallet. So for that I thank you and the staff! The park has always been home for me and my dog. The staff is an extended family that is always helpful and amazing to our community. Aventura park is one of a kind.

Granada Park is a tiny sliver of land along Granada Blvd. It seems to exist solely to showcase a…read moreunique piece of art gifted to Coral Gables from it's sister city, Granada, located in the community of Andalusia Spain. The art piece was donated by Jose Torres Hurtado, the mayor of Granada. It was created by Tino Marmoles, a marble producing company from Spain. Coral Gables became the sister city to Grenada in 1989. Granada is Spanish for pomegranate which is the subject of the white marble art piece. Pomegranates are called the crown royal of all fruit because when they are upright they have a calyx that resembles a crown. The fruit symbolizes fruitfulness, abundance, fertility, ambition, prosperity, and has been considered a symbol of good luck since ancient times. The sculpture was installed piece by piece like a jigsaw puzzle by the Public Works Department. Ice was inserted between the pieces and as the ice melted it lined up the pieces. The pomegranate is a symbol of the friendship that exists between the two cities. The art work was dedicated in February of 2008. The park also contains a paved walkway and antique cobblestones donated by Emma Dolores and Sara Marlee Broad.

The Charles B Stafford Park was named in memory of Officer Charles Brian Stafford, the first and…read moreonly Miami Springs Police Department officer killed in the line of duty. Officer Stafford was shot and killed on June 11, 1991, during a traffic stop of a stolen car. He had previously worked as a prison guard in North Florida before joining the Miami Springs force. He had only been serving on the police force for 20 months when he was murdered leaving behind a wife and two young daughters. A local Boy Scout troop is currently working on creating a memorial to Officer Stafford in the park. I came to the park to visit the Miami Springs Historical Museum but I ended up staying after to walk around for fresh air and exercise. Park amenities include two soccer fields, a baseball field, a softball field, picnic pavilion with tables, and a tot lot playground. Whether coming for a game, picnic, play, the history museum, or exercise, this park is a valuable recreational resource for residents and visitors to Miami Springs.

Walker, an advocate for the Golden Gate subdivision, a predominantly Black neighborhood where the area's first pioneers and Bahamian immigrant laborers settled in the early 1900's before the city was chartered. Lola Walker was civic minded and engaged with city officials to ensure the needs of her community were met and through her efforts a homeowners' organization was formed that focused on improving and preserving Coral Gables' MacFarlane Homestead and Golden Gate subdivisions. In 1994 the MacFarlane Homestead District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In honor of Lola Walker's efforts to improve her community, the association was named the Lola B. Walker Homeowners Association. This park was dedicated in 1989 to pay tribute to Lola Walker and the Bahamian legacy that built this community. The park is across from George Washington Carver Community School founded in 1899 for Black residents living in Dade County. Today this park has trees, plaques, and a public art piece by Hank Willis Thomas titled "The truth is I welcome you." The bright blue sculpture is made from rolled steel is meant to look like a speech bubble which will spark conservation. Other pieces from this series are in other area parks.

Arcola Lakes Park is the neighborhood park for this community and it was a great place to take a leisurely stroll during a recent trip to North Miami. This popular park has a successful youth tennis program, a small community center, and playground along with the walking path I enjoyed. In 2001 the size of the park was increased with the purchase of a 3.76-acre site that was a former trailer park. The addition helped to eliminate recurring flooding problems and allowed for the creation of a natural stormwater retention area. A picnic shelter, walkway and landscaping were also added. Arcola Lakes Park appeals to fitness enthusiasts as well families with kids. This well loved park is an important recreational resource for this community.

Its name comes from the Spanish words meaning "The Gate," inspired by two large wooden gates that once marked the village entrance but were taken down in the 1940's. El Portal's modern history began during the collapse of Miami's real estate boom when it was annexed into the City of Miami in 1925 but with the arrival of the Great Depression, Miami gave it up its jurisdiction and El Portal was incorporated as its own village. Three small subdivisions Sherwood Forest, El Jardín ("The Garden"), and El Portal were merged to form the village, which is located about six miles north of downtown Miami. One of the village's most significant historical landmarks is the Sherwood Forest Indian Mound, located near NE 85th Street. This four-foot high ancient burial mound dates to approximately 600 AD and is recognized as the first archaeological site in Miami Dade County to be publicly preserved. For more than 50 years, El Portal has also been designated by the State of Florida as a bird sanctuary, helping protect its abundant wildlife. The designation means that the village's birds and trees are safeguarded from harm. One place you can see them is the El Portal Nature Trail a short, paved walkway that runs behind the Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education. The trail features benches, outdoor fitness equipment, and a StoryWalk for children. While it isn't very long, it's a pleasant place to enjoy a walk surrounded by nature. During my visit, I spotted a bright red cardinal.
