I did my first AI workshop in 2013, not based on a recommendation from family/friends, but…read moreliterally by accidentally finding their Yelp page and reading some of the amazing reviews. (I might be the only person to go that path, most people at least try a Wednesday night class). I was going through a divorce, which was really more a symptom of the issues in my life - I just had a lot of negative stories about myself, felt pretty worthless a lot of the time, and had some patterns that weren't serving me. The first workshop, and pretty much all of them since then, blew open the doors of perception for me. TBH I hadn't ever seen a therapist, and although I felt depressed a lot of the time, there was such a stigma for me around it and around taking meds. And I felt like if the problem was within me, then the solution was too. And AI really provided the nurturing and safe space for me to confront the things I was too afraid or ashamed to see about myself. It was very liberating to me to start understanding how my childhood conditioning caused me to believe certain things, and the defense mechanisms the mind uses as protection, but really weren't serving me. It's probably not a substitute for therapy, but I feel like the growth I had in a weekend workshop was what I would have gotten out of a year or more of therapy. I've heard multiple people say that after workshops, but as they say your mileage will vary. Personally I was ready to take a deeper dive on myself, and AI's methods and tools really helped. I did the spiritual retreat on Mt Shasta that year, then did classes and workshops sporadically when I felt called to. And I did the mountain retreat again in 2024, and dropped into the most beautiful and inspiring experience of my life. Full disclosure I'm now on the Team, which is the core group that commits to a year of service to bring this type of growth and awareness to others. And I'm posting because I want to pay it forward and be a beacon for folks who might be where I was (and sometimes still am!) Best of luck on your journey, if you're curious about AI, reach out and someone can talk with you about it, or just show up to a Wednesday night. "EXEMPLARY PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROVIDED THROUGH SAC-STATE"…read more SIT REP In one of my roles for my employer - the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) - my training-section provides a training opportunity for our licensing enforcement officers & investigators who work in the Community Care Licensing Division (CCLD). These officers must go out to state-licensed Community Care Facilities where they investigate complaints about facility-deficiencies, neglect or outright abuse on the client-populations residing in these facilities. For those officers entrusted to the specific investigations of Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs), and for the Chronically Ill (RCFCIs), California State University - Sacramento (CSUS) provides important subject-matter information that allows our officers to investigate these cases with a far better understanding of the demands placed on the licensed facility, on the staff, and what minimum standards for acceptable care should be maintained for the elderly client population residing at these facilities. In addition, there is a training requirement mandated by the State Legislature that our officers go through so many hours of training on these specialized subject-matter areas. THE SET-UP & CURRICULUM For the last five (5) years, I've enjoyed the experience of working with Dr. Osborn of CSU-Sacramento's School of Gerontology. She and her instructor staff have provided our CCLD officers with great curriculum and in-class training that has helped them get the knowledge base and hands-on skills they need to better interact with the facility staff and the elderly client populations. The various modules in this 40 HR training provide a lot of specific information that deals with the health needs of the elderly, better understandings of mental handicaps and deficiencies, minimum standards for residential living, and better communication tools for interpersonal action with elderly populations. Other specialized modules also discuss dealing with family members of the elderly and being sensitive to their frames of mind, as well as other related issues dealing with end-of-life scenarios. THE LOWDOWN The CSUS School of Gerontology can provide excellent program knowledge on the elderly populations of our society so that greater understanding of their unique needs can be provided.

Unfortunately, I needed to take the class on that date and could not reschedule. I had to scramble to find another CPR class (and the money to pay for it) in order to be hired on time for my job. I called in order to get a refund only to be told that it would take 6-8 weeks to receive my refund and they seemed perplexed as to why I could not reschedule. I found another class that was shorter, cheaper, and I didn't have to pre pay in advance. After spending 5 years at Sac State, struggling to find work after graduation I was extremely disappointed that they would take so long to refund my money when there was little to no notice that the class was cancelled. I DO NOT recommend taking CPR classes here as instructors are unreliable and their refund policy is unacceptable. Go to NorCal EMT in Roseville for cheaper, reliable classes.

My main interest as a retired person is in art classes and this is where I finally found classes to suit my needs. Lynn Morrison teaches water color painting, acrylic painting, drawing and multi-media arts. She really is a wonder and a supportive and generous teacher. I like her pattern of showing how a certain work is started, layered, and completed as the class worked along side of her. This year they added Asian Fine art brush and ink painting. Myungsook Piette really knows her medium and is very generous with materials. She demonstrates technique and allows lots of time to practice. Each session we learned one of the "Four Gentlemen" and mounted a completed painting. We also carved our own stamp to sign our works. There is also photography instruction. I found the material useful in class, but I don't own the software, so I couldn't practice outside of class. The teacher Roy Salisbury is very well prepared and knows what he is talking about. In the spring students can show their work at a week-long art show at Mesa Verde High School. There is also an art sale later in the spring. This is definitely a reasonably priced center where you can get excellent art instruction. The Spring Catalog is now out and online at www.sanjuan.edu/sunrisetc

The program is accredited, which is great. Dr. Suhad is an amazing professor. She is down to earth and just brilliant. I couldn't imagine learning about sonography from anyone else. Melissa, my clinical coordinator, is very encouraging and I appreciate all of her help during my clinicals. I want to be 100% transparent about my time here at SUI so I will also speak about some things that can be improved on. I believe that better communication and full transparency will take this program to the next level. I think that the amazing staff, like Dr. Suhad and Melissa, are taking on a lot of responsibility and if their burden was shared with possibly more staff, the program would be so much more amazing. There are a few other kinks not worth mentioning but I know that SUI is already done some steps to make the next cohort's experience better than what mine was so I know they are very well capable of greatness. Nonetheless, my time here at SUI was/is truly remarkable. I would recommend it if you are seriously as passionate about sonography as I am.

Treat it like your own experience because it is basically a way to learn and practice to apply for licensure/certification. I was in a phlebotomy technician course, and I liked it because we practiced blood draws (including capillary puncture [finger stick] and venipuncture) so many times on so many different vein arrangements and on both the antecubital area (inside of elbow) and dorsal hand (opposite side of the hand's palm side - "veiny" part). I feel like when I came in a lot of people did not have background on health care (e.g., anatomy and physiology, terminology, etc.). I was so happy that I took classes at CRC and SCC (Los Rios) before coming here. After the phlebotomy technician course, I ended up getting my license in phlebotomy and continued to do courses here (medical assisting). It's nice because with the cost of tuition for medical assisting (MA) we get textbooks/supplies (a big textbook, a workbook, a medical terminology book, 1 set of scrubs, and a stethoscope). It's nice to work with all different backgrounds and ages. I would say it is getting better, and I do like the job workshops held by the staff (Lindsay Cosgaya, Jim Wirick, and Mr. Dan Davis). A lot of people should read the license (Certified Phlebotomy Technician I) / certification (for MA it's a certification not a license) requirements and try to get some basic anatomy down! You gotta do lots of work on your own even before. Also: phlebotomy (blood draw) makes people feel weak - make sure you have lots of time to eat and drink and rest because it's a quick course but you have to practice a lot (get 50 successful draws).
