We were seated quite promptly. The patio was very pleasant. I will say, the menu was quite limited at this time. I ordered Wood's Caesar Salad; charred cauliflower, Publican Quality Bread croutons, and parmesan tossed in a lemon vinaigrette - caesar dressing. First off, the salad was very good. It is under the shared and small plates section of the menu. I think the word tiny would be more fitting. I asked my waitress if it were possible to get a protein on the side, and she only offered me bacon. I do not eat pork, so that was a bit of a bummer. We came here for our first wedding anniversary, it was SO lovely! We were greeted with complementary champagne and got a yummy charcuterie plate! For our entrees we chose the salmon with broccolini and Mushroom radiatori. WOW! These dishes were amazing! The salmon was literally cooked to perfection, it had a beautiful crispy skin on a bed of broccolini and asparagus. The Mushroom radiatori was SO flavorful and delicious, it was very rich and creamy and had a beautiful balance. My boyfriend and I decided to come here for dinner. We haven't been here In a couple of years. The place wasn't busy for a Thursday. Which was fine. When we got there my boyfriend was cold and asked one of the busboys can he turn down the AC. Scott (I think that was his name) was our server. Very nice and pleasant. We order cocktails. I had the Wood Espresso Martini. My boyfriend had the Blush and Rouge. Both drinks were amazing. For starters, we share the Caprese Salad (yummy). For our main, I had the Rigatoni Bolognese. He had the Slagel Chicken Breast. Both main dinners were good. We have been here before and ordered the Wood Burger and that's good too. We finished with Tiramisu OMG that was good too. Food: 5/5 We kicked off the night with 2x35-1 cocktails, the drink was refreshing and well-balanced. For appetizers, we had the Blue Fin Tuna Crudo. The flavors were light and vibrant, we enjoyed every single bite. For mains, we ordered: Wood's Dry Aged Steak Frites: Cooked to perfection with a tender, flavorful steak and crispy, golden fries. It is beautifully executed. KFC (Korean Fried Chicken): The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with savory flavors. The sauce is great paired with lettuces. Last night we went to Wood for my birthday dinner. We went last year and had such a great time that we decided to come back this year. It happened to be the night of the Halloween parade, so the restaurant was understandably busy. We had an 8:30 p.m. reservation for a party of eight and were seated right away. Unfortunately, our server, Scott, had an attitude from the moment he approached the table. He immediately told us to put our food order in before the kitchen closed, which caught us off guard especially since the restaurant allowed us to make a reservation just 30 minutes before closing without any warning that we'd need to rush. When Scott returned to take our order, his tone was short and reactive. He snapped at one friend for asking if the burger came with fries, and at another for ordering the "KFC sandwich," saying sharply, "It's not a sandwich. I don't know why everyone thinks it is." The tension at the table was palpable every time he came by. I found myself on edge, worried about setting him off again. By the end of the meal, after one of my friends tried to lighten the mood, Scott launched into an unsolicited story about being maced during last year's Halloween -- an uncomfortable "trauma dump" that none of us expected or wanted during dinner. It was, honestly, the worst dining experience I've ever had. What makes it even more disappointing is that it happened on my birthday, an evening that should have felt special but instead felt stressful and uncomfortable. If I wanted to be yelled at during dinner, I'd have gone to the Wiener Circle and at least had a laugh about it. I'll never return to Wood, and I'll be sharing this experience with others so they can avoid having their night ruined the way mine was. read more

I really enjoyed my first visit here. It's very cool yet cozy inside, and the tables are all spaced out far enough apart so people aren't on top of each other, which is great. There's also a very nice outdoor patio. Service was fantastic (thank you to our server, Nick, for being awesome). Our party began the night with two rounds of cocktails. Honestly, this was the only big miss of the night for me, and although the cocktails were extremely well-crafted, they just weren't to my taste. I ordered the Jigglypuff 2.0 first, admittedly just because the name made me laugh. It was so incredibly sweet that after a few sips I knew if I drank more, I'd be sick. Then I tried the Seersucker, which was good (my husband loved it), but just was not for me. Next time I'll try something else or stick with wine, as they have a great wine list and I enjoyed the bottle we had with dinner. The food we had was fantastic. We started with two appetizers, the porchetta tonnato (so good and so innovative!) and the spicy Italian flatbread (delicious!). Everyone at my table chose a different entree and enjoyed it. I had the mafaldine con agnello all'arriabiatta, which was quite good. There was much more meat in it than I expected, too: I assumed there would just be a bit mixed in with the sauce, but you get a ton of lamb along with the pasta, and the sauce has a great kick to it. For dessert, we shared the strawberries and cream, which was also extremely unique. I liked it but didn't love it as much as my dining companions did and will likely try something else next time. Wow. I don't know where to start. We have been to this restaurant many times and always had a great time. However, this past experience has been unbelievable. The manager Josephine Ho is extremely rude and we would NEVER return here even if paid to go. My husband and I were in Chicago for my mother's funeral. We went to the restaurant to escape the emotions I was experiencing. I also was battling flu like symptoms. We were only at the restaurant 10 minutes and I was feeling very ill and told our waiter that I needed to leave. We didn't even drink our drinks or get our appetizer. We asked the server to wrap the appetizer and cancel the entrees. He agreed. The next day my spouse realized that we were charged $202.30 -- the complete meal. We were never offered to take the entrees with us and we were charged and also charged a gratuity on the meals. I called several times and Josephine was never around. Then I emailed her and this was the response I received... Hi Bryan, I was the manager on duty during your dine with us that evening. I was informed by my staff, your server, that either you or your husband was heavily intoxicated during the first 10-mins of your seating. I gave the staff the okay to pack your food to go, since you asked to leave, but a refund was not able to be initiated because the food was already made. Please do not accuse my staff of including gratuity for himself as there was a signed receipt in which we have kept records of and we have camera recordings of you signing the check. For that reason, we are not refunding you back your dinner and you are no longer welcome at our establishment. I'm sorry about your personal hardships, but do not ever accuse my restaurant of "being unfair and unethical". If you are seriously experiencing financial hardships, I would recommend not going out in the first place such as "Miller's Pub" or our restaurant for that matter. Our check averages per guest have never been a surprise to anyone, and if you are a frequent diner you should've been aware of this. The Bloody Mary was delicious and perfectly made, with a spicy kick to it. The beignets here were good, but not even close to what a beignet is. These were more like donut holes. My wife ordered their Fried Chicken & Biscuit. The chicken was perfectly fried and covered in country gravy and hot sauce. It was served with a side of beef fat fried potatoes. I have to be honest here. I was disappointed because we came for the shortribs based on online reviews, but they did not have this dish. CONS: We decided to stay and tried the beef bourguignon, but it was terrible. Literally, it was not good at all. It was not tender, the flavor was not good, it was nasty. No other way to say it. I hope management sees this and takes it off the menu. Both of us felt it was very bad, so it wasn't a one-off. Maybe it's an acquired taste? Idk PROS: The good part was that the waiter told management that we were not happy with the dish (we did not ask him to get/tell mgmt), and they took one entree off of the bill. They also gave use a free order of beignets, which were delicious. The customer service here is awesome, and the staff and management should be commended for their efforts. We did not ask for anything free or for any order to be removed from the bill, so their initiative was notable. Each dish was excellent with the standout dishes being the Confit Duck Leg, the Pork Duo, and Escargot. We were able to introduce our daughter's roommates to the Duck and Escargot which they'd never experienced before and they really enjoyed them. They also had a wide variety of wine, craft, cocktails, and spirits that really enhanced our experience. Service: Great service from arrival to final course. Our server guided us through the appropriate number of small/large plates for our party and made excellent suggestions on pairings. Wait staff checked on our party frequently ensuring our evening went very smoothly. Atmosphere: Loved the space and we were able to get an outdoor table with perfect weather. Half of our group ordered from Wood's restaurant week menu and the other half ordered from the regular menu. We appreciated the fact that Wood did not require our entire party to choose from either the restaurant week or regular menu. Came here on a Friday night out and were able to get a table promptly even though we were 30 minutes early for our reservation. Staff was prompt and kind especially when there was a miscommunication about which dish we got. We ordered the heirloom tomatoes and burrata and the steak tartare, but also received the heirloom toast. All three were delicious including the toast which isn't something I'd have ordered but was amazing (and comped after the miscommunication was discovered)! For a special Christmas dinner, and after reviewing options from many restaurants, we ordered carry out food from Wood. We could not have been more pleased with our decision! First of all, it was a bonus that they were actually open on Christmas Day for pick-up. That helped assure that the food was going to be as fresh as possible on that day. Pick-up was easy and everything was well packed with excellent preparation instructions. But the food... oh my, the food was over the top delicious and of the highest quality. We ordered Beef Wellington, Roast Chicken, Potato Gratin, Roasted Root Vegetables and Winter Squash Soup. The soup came a garnish of roasted apples and veggies, candied pepitas and crème fraîche. It was silky smooth and rich in flavor. The Beef Wellington had a wonderful pastry and the meat was perfectly cooked, tender and delicious. The Roasted Chicken, although simple, had a wonderful depth of flavor and was plump and juicy. The potato and vegetable sides were the perfect accompaniment for our holiday meal. The portions were incredibly generous and we had enough food for three meals... so it was a relative bargain. We both favored our selections but thoroughly enjoyed the other. We shared the steak tartare and it was probably my favorite part of the meal. It burst with flavor, delectable bread accompaniment, and was as fresh as could be! The Brussels sprouts were also delicious! My only critique is that I prefer crispy prepared brussel sprouts over soft, but that's a personal preference. I got the savory sausage and beet entree and loved the unique and bold flavors. I was STUFFED and happy. My husband really enjoyed his duck as well. The service, ambiance, and cleanliness were also top-notch. Prices were decent given the quality of food. We are so glad we went back to Wood and explored the menu more. While there are things to get for cheap, the more expensive items are worth it. We had dinner here only a couple of days ago. Wood adds a 3% fee onto your bill without saying so on the menu. When we got the bill and discovered the fee, we paid in cash, we included a tip that was greater than 20%, and asked the server to have the fee removed and added to his tip. The server spoke with the manager, and the server came back to the table telling us that the fee is mandatory and will not be taken off. If you are going to add a fee, state it upfront and say what it's for. These fees are an artifact of another time. Many of us think they shouldn't be there at all, and that they should be built into the price of each menu item. Chicago is full of restaurants still adding a fee but Wood is the first place I've been to where the fee isn't mentioned anywhere until you get your check. This is also the first time I have been told that this fee is non-negotiable. Wood should behave better, not because the Chicago business affairs and consumer protection office requires it ( https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/dol/rulesandregs/BACP-FOODVENDORRULES.pdf ), but rather because it's obvious. Let me start by saying, I have been here a hand full of times and the food is always delicious, some times service is hit or miss, but the food is the draw. Tonight was a pretty terrible experience with the food. The Escargot was very Unappealing, it looked like green soup and it was smeared all over the bowl. The charcuterie board looked like it had been sitting out for a while before it was Served and the meat was cut wayyyyy to thick. I will say the waiter was amazing and lovely and kind. They did mention the kitchen was short staffed, but the food came out in great time, just in poor condition. The wine we had was also great. We have walked past WOOD for almost 3 years thinking it was primarily a bar. Then a Yelp review caught our eye with great comments on some favorite foods so we had to stop in. Because it was a Wednesday night their were several specials to help too. Since we prefer to avoid meats we started off with the Gazpacho accompanied by the Mushroom& Onion Flatbread. I have never been a fan of Gazpacho, but this was fantastic. The Mushroom & Onion Flatbread was the perfect earthy balance to the Gazpacho's bright sweet flavor. We followed this with the Special Radiatore with mushroom cream sauce, which was paired with a local draft ale. Again a home run! I suggest you eat this slowly to savor its delightful slow dance on your tongue. Each of these choices were suggested by our marvelous waiter "Tuna". Thanks dude! We started the meal off with a carafe of mimosa and it was the perfect size for our group. For the table, we also got the beignets and buttermilk biscuit.
