Wolsey's is the one bar I've been recommend to try by almost anyone I tell I'm going to Bangor. It's a sports bar which serves some really nice pub grub and has the greatest atmosphere. It's not too boisterous and everyone is there to just have a good time. The food is perhaps a pound or two more than some places but it's in prime location by the Marina and the food is always top quality every single time! (there have been six). Their chips are particularly good! Great place to hang out for afew pints, watch a bit of footie or have a nice bite to eat! Wolsey's has it all!

Yelping it!

Well we went to Wolseys for the elite secret supper and I can honestly say I never even realised that it was the restaurant that has the rather annoying radio ads with the kid wanting to go because kids eat free! Well what an event, trains, goats, music and steak all in the same night! We met @ central station and got the train to Bangor, headed quickly to the goats toe for a few beverages, then made our way to Wolseys, on arrival we have our own kind of private area and where greeted by the friendly staff, I'll get the negatives out of the way first, the decor slightly dated but was warm and comfy, the service was good in terms of the staff were natural and knew there stuff but the biggest problem for me was the length of wait for drinks and food, the wait was a bit long and wasn't even a mention from the staff about it:( also slightly disappointed that the 2 desserts choice me and my wife would have eaten where not available! Now the positives, I liked Wolseys and will be back, as the food was good and the steaks that we got where lovely, I got beef and bird which was a 10oz rib eye (or sirloin) and a southern fried chicken breast, some sweet potato fries and bbq sauce, the steak was cooked well and it was quickly eaten. One of the best things was the price of the jack Daniels single barrel! £3.90 I was really happy bout that lol so I had myself one, yet again an excellent event organised by the main man Stevie! Pity we had to make a dash for the last train but bring on the next event!!

I have only been here once and it was for the Secret Supper. The food was delicious, we had to pick from the steak menu....what a hardship :) I had the beef and bird. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. The greens and sides were delicious too. Really tasty. For dessert I had the nicest chocolate brownie I have ever had. Amazing. We were lucky that our table was one of the 1st to be served so didn't have to wait as long as others but it did seem to take quite a while from ordering to food arriving and there didn't seem to be a lot of staff available. However, the staff they did have couldn't have been more friendly and attentive. The toilets are rank. Tiny, fusty wee bathroom at the back of the building which didn't tie in with the beautiful modern funky resteraunt design. Apart from the toilets and the waiting time, everything else was fab. And they have a great choice of drinks available too :)

I went into to the restaurant upstairs of Wolsey's and is nice inside it. For starters I got myself a Salted Chilli Chicken and Main Course, a Bacon and Cheese Burger with Sweet Potato Fries. The food was nice and I would recommend that place for anyone who is looking for about to eat if they're down in Bangor.

Great night out here with great company ... Food was excellent and the staff very accommodating. We did have to wait a little for food but the restaurant was very busy and when it came it was def worth waiting for. Steak night on a Thursday ... I opted for the surf and turf minus the mussels and the fennel cream, which they catered for no problem. I was that stuffed after dinner that I could only share a dessert with my friend ... Chocolate brownie and it was the best I've ever tasted. I would certainly go back !!!

Last time I was in Wolsey's was over 20years ago on a boozy night out with friends safe to say I don't remember much about it! Fast forward to last night and the Elite Secret Supper, there were around 20 of us spread across 5 tables in our own section in the upstairs restaurant. Staff were polite and friendly the only letdown in service was how slow they were with some folks ordering dessert before others had even been served their main meal! This also meant a mad dash to catch the last train to Belfast for some people. When the food arrived it was well worth the wait, I opted for surf & turf which consisted of 10oz ribeye (or sirloin) some prawns, mussels and crab claws served on a bed of green beans with a little pot of delicious sweetcorn & fennel cream and a side of chunky chips. My steak was cooked just how I like it on the rare side of medium rare and was one of the nicest steaks I have had in a while. The mussels were small but cooked beautifully, prawns were juicy and crab claws full of flavour. Initially I thought the chips were overcooked based solely on appearance but they tasted great. By the time I got to order dessert a few options had ran out so I chose the black forest roulade. The icecream, raspberry coulis & flake were the best things on the plate with the roulade itself being rather bland and definitely missing out on the rich cherry flavour I was expecting. Not being particularly active and certainly not wanting to attempt running for a train on a full belly I decided to taxi back to Belfast with some of the others. This also gave me the opportunity to sample some bargainous Prosecco, only £11 per bottle or £9.90 with a loyalty card...this was a tasty wee fizz and I certainly enjoyed the glasses I had. Between the steak & prosecco I will definitely be back for another visit! Hopefully when I return Wolsey's will have removed the rather dodgy looking carpet from the ladies toilets and replaced it with a more hygienic floor covering

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I came here to attend a Yelp event but a few of us thought we would go there early and check the place out so see what it was like when they knew we weren't from a review site - sort of like mystery shoppers. As soon as we sat down we were greeted by a waiter who asked us if we were eating or just in for a drink, when we advised just a drink he did not walk away like I expected but rather asked us what we would like to order. He then brought our drinks and asked if we would like to set up a tab or just pay for our drinks now. So unlike any other bar I've been to as you normally wouldn't have a waiter service. We asked for the wifi code and he happily brought us down the password. All in all a really helpful pleasant service. We moved upstairs to the restaurant which was in better condition than the bar downstairs which was a bit tired and in need of a revamp, and here the staff excelled. Friendly helpful and chatty without being overbearing or annoying. Food was delicious and the steak nights are definitely a bargain

I know it didn't have the greatest reputations before hand but since the change of ownership it really has improved!! It has now turned into one of Bangors best bars in my opinion. Great for watching the sport and has an all round good atmosphere now. It also does good food, half price steaks on Wednesdays and Thursday which I would recommend! It has a restaurant upstairs or you could just choose to sit downstairs in the main bar. It's also a lot bigger than I first thought! Starting to attracted some music talents with live sets etc!! Would highly recommend it!

Weekly entertainment at Wolseys. PS, Discobeard on Sundays are well worth seeing and hearing!

I have to start by saying that I am a regular Wolseys customer. It is my home from home. And will more than likely continue with to be! However..... I was there last night (Thursday) and had the misfortune of enduring their new Open Mic night. It was a disaster from start to finish, and the bar quickly emptied of those few who had braved the cold weather. I'd recommend Wolseys for a good night out - friendly, pleasant and helpful staff, but I will never sit through another of their open mic nights!!!

Nothing better than a big fire...pity it ain't lit!

Long Before my National Insurance card came off the press I was thrust into employment at Jenny…read moreWatts. My Mum convinced me that working at one of Bangor's busiest bars would help round my character. To this day I am not sure if it did, but one thing is for sure the labour I undertook will help me give you the inside track on Bangor's oldest licensed premises. Jenny Watts is the Grandfather of pubs, it is quirky, full of character and can be quite entertaining if you ignore the tobacco stains. But much like an elderly relative it has one or two very interesting stories to tell. Legend has it Jenny herself was a famous 18th Century smuggler, regulars in the bar will tell of long winding caves that run from under the pubs deep cellar all the way to Bangor Bay. Having worked in Jenny Watts I can unfortunately confirm that this story is just a myth. But it is stories like this that help to mould an establishment. Tourists and Locals intermingle in Jenny Watts creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. If you are looking for a traditional Irish pub atmosphere then look no further. In the winter locals huddle round the open fire sipping Guinness and swirling sixteen year old whiskey. In the summer the enclosed Beer Garden is full to the brim with holiday makers drinking cider and sparkling rose. All this accompanied by live music all year round makes Jenny's perfect for any occasion. Jenny Watts also offers a full Bistro menu making it a very difficult place to leave. One tip from me, if you are going to Jenny Watts make sure you ask the friendly staff or locals if they have experienced any spooky happenings, I am sure they will not disappoint.

Its an old style pub with a lovely homely feeling and really is a cracking place to go and have a few pints or some red wine. It has a lovely wee beer garden/smoking area out the back that is brilliant craic on a summers evening and really adds to the ambience and atmosphere of Bangor's oldest pub. The decor is oldy worldy and the pictures on the wall must've started a million conversations. There is a club upstairs on a Saturday night but its for the older divorceé crowd so I've never been. There is usually some nice acoustic pub singers downstairs so thats enough for me.

One of Bangor's finest, frequented by Hollywood A-listers and North Down A-listers alike. The Salty…read moreDog has an unmatched ambience, certainly unmatched in Bangor, and the cuisine is as good as you get any where in NI. They pride themselves on local fresh produce and this translates to their menu which is full of seafood (it's on the coast). The staff in the Salty Dog are exceptional, they have excellent knowledge of the menu and the wine lists. Don't make the mistake of asking for a white wine because they have loads and it will only expose your lack of wine knowledge as it did on my case. It seems that other reviewers have had mixed experiences of The Salty Dog but every time I've been in I have throughly enjoyed myself and my grub. I am heading back again soon - so it's 4 stars for now and they might get the coveted fifth if the latest experience matches the previous ones.

For some reason I forget this restaurant exists, however, we received vouchers for our anniversary…read moreso headed down on a Friday night to sample the delights. The restaurant itself is very well decorated, very glamorous and luxurious. Not what you would expect from the bar area. A new menu had commenced that day , so the waitress seemed a little unsure on some of the dishes but I think it slightly harsh to critique on that. The new menu had a great selection - I opted for the salt and pepper burger. Great portion sizes, really well presented and most importantly tasted great. 5* so far! My only let down was the dessert. I prefer a more indulgent selection, but that's personal choice. I settled on the lemon posset with mango and passionfruit sorbet. The sorbet was good but the posset was a lot more runny that I would have liked and my husband agreed. It had popping candy on top, which I thought might be nice but it felt like they just threw it on trying to be different. Didn't really work for me. Overall though I would give this place a 4*, being the first night perhaps the posset has since been perfected. I wouldn't say no for a rejudge.
