This is a very traditional place. Truth be told I haven't set foot over their doorstep since the day that their Harp Lager sign fell off from above the door and hit me on the head. Luckily it was very light. Either that or my skull is very thick. Anyway, the place was one of those places, you know, one of those 'dirty old pubs that smelled of B.O, stale cigarette smoke and vomit. At least, that was always the impression I got.
Thing is, it has always been quite a busy place. Loyal customers and rarely empty, so last week I figured, sod it, try it for a change. I know what you are all thinking. You are thinking I'm going to say that it is completely different these days. That it has went up market blah blah blah.
Well, it hasn't. It's almost the same. EXCEPT it doesn't smell foul any more. It has been given a lick of paint, a good scrub and not much else has changed. It is what it is. And what it is, is a friendly old fashioned pub. TV screens that show rugby (I think you may get thrown out if you mention football) and horse racing. The bar staff are friendly, the customers are quick to say hello to new faces. The front bar is small, but leads onto a 'nook' which in turn leads onto a larger space. Live music is a regular feature, ranging from traditional to half modern pop. During the Bangor Open House Festival every year, a book club can be found here, which does to show that they do try to cater for a wide selection of people, despite the crumbling outward appearance of the place. It will not become my regular drinking hole but I think anyone visiting Bangor and looking for a good old fashioned traditional boozer will not be disappointed here! read more
