The items we bought were all reasonably good, though not of highest quality. They have a nice area outside to sit to enjoy a coffee and baked good. Although, we almost didn't stop in, not knowing what it was. They really should post a sign out front for us tourists. Also, perhaps a little cleaning of the dust and spider webs out front would make it more enjoyable too.

Still, some of the baked goods are gluten-free (woohoo!) and the menu offers some great daily options that are good for eating in. I count this spot as a favourite local stop-in for weekend brunch. The best news, though, was that when I was in for brunch a couple weeks ago, the staff told me that they are developing more gluten-free offerings, including fresh bread! Should appear around May in the shop. I am eagerly awaiting a taste!

We didn't stay in so we wandered the store side a bit. There were a lot of ready-made meals like pies and sausage rolls and ice creams. You could pick up a tasty sweet treat, some freshly baked breads, and a lot of lovely dessert options. They also had some local goodies like County Bounty sodas, jams, teas, and others. I picked up a few local goodies and then a cinnamon bun (which was massive!) and a ginger cookie. The ginger cookies were delicious. Soft, molassas cookies with that chewy texture. The cinnamon bun was huge and more bread-y than sweet, which I really liked. It had such a great flavour. We wanted to grab some pies too but we couldn't bring them on the road with us. Definitely gotta bring a cooler next time we're heading into Kingston. The staff are also so friendly here and do their best to get through the crowd in an organized and fast way. We had to reheat the sausage roll at home as they did not offer to do it in store, which was fine since we weren't planning on eating it right away. If you are a POC- do not come here!! The woman at the counter was not friendly at all. We all felt very uncomfortable in this ice cream shop. The environment was not welcoming and we left like we had to leave quickly after sitting down. Not to mention that she kept overcharging us for the ice cream and we did not notice until after. We are a large group as it was a family trip to Clayton, so maybe the person felt overwhelmed but the pricing was definitely off. She was doing written math on a paper and was not kind when one of pointed out that she had made a mistake.

A gem of a bakery and cafe in downtown Kingston!…read more My review is only for the bakery and store portion of Pan Chancho. I haven't had the chance to dine in the cafe yet, mostly because it gets extremely busy, especially on weekends. That said, the bakery/store has so many great finds. Their bread is excellent quality and a great value for the size, at around $5 for a small loaf and $8 for a larger one. My favorite is the olive rosemary sourdough, which is absolutely delicious. The saucisson sec is another great local find. The baked goods offer a nice rotating variety, with everything from Québec maple chômeurs to Italian maritozzi. On my last visit, I tried the Vietnamese coffee panna cotta, which was excellent. There's also an large gluten-free selection, ranging from breads to fresh-baked goods. The gluten-free scones are a particular standout. Beyond the food, Pan Chancho also has a great selection of kitchen and pantry-related items, including spices, pasta, sauces, hand towels, reusable bags, and more. It's the kind of place where you can go in for a loaf of bread and easily leave with a whole bag of interesting little things. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in downtown Kingston! The bakery alone is reason enough to visit, even if you don't get a chance to sit down at the cafe.

I stumbled upon this place on a walk downtown and HAD to give it a try because of their eccentric name and cool logo. I tried their Art of Almost sandwich which is avocado and brie with a sweet spicy mustard -- you can choose 3 extra toppings as well. It was absolutely divine! This was a signature sandwich, so it came to $12 but you can get the half sandwich for $6.50. Their non-signature sandwiches are $10.50 for a full one and $5.75 for a half one. They also make their bread in-house which I thought was pretty fantastic. I'll be back for sure to buy their bread!
