Think twice about buying from American Mattress. We ordered a new Tempur-Pedic at American Mattress…read moreon Maysville Road. The one we received, according to the law label, had been manufactured more than a year prior and was labeled as a floor model. It also had a heavy fragrance that transferred onto bedding and clothing. This was not the rubbery, chemical off-gassing you sometimes get with new memory foam; it was more like a scented cleaning product. Everyone has different tastes and tolerance levels for fragrance, but I couldn't take it. The store did not admit error but offered to replace the mattress. By this time we had lost confidence in American Mattress and only wanted a refund. As it turns out, they don't give refunds. They were not even willing to refund us the difference if we returned it for a less expensive mattress. Had we bought our mattress through Tempur-Pedic's website or one of its flagship stores (the nearest one is in Indianapolis), the Tempur-Pedic warranty could have applied. But since we bought it from a third-party retailer, Tempur-Pedic deferred to the retailer. Expensive lesson learned: If you're shopping for a Tempur-pedic in Fort Wayne, know the retailer's return policies before you buy. (Hint: Skip American Mattress and visit Mattress Firm, especially the Dupont Road location, instead.) You'll sleep better.

As I spoke to the sales person at American Mattress and telling him about the brands we had looked at, he asked about the Tempur-Pedic mattress we were interested in. When I told him which one, he responded "no you didn't. I'm not calling you a liar." That's literally what he did. Even if I had the wrong firmness level, this is no way to treat a potential customer. Needless to say, I left and will not be purchasing a mattress here.

They make a point to carry items almost entirely made in the USA, many of which they have been stocking for many, many years. They also have design resources to help customers make design decisions (at no charge) as well which we found helpful. I have been to other "big chain" stores and always find I can't get exactly what I want, or I can only get it at a price twice what I want to pay. Small family owned businesses like this one stay in business (in this case for a couple generations) in large part because they have a core of loyal customers who have been happy with them in the past and keep coming back - which we fall into that category. I would order again from them with confidence, in fact, I just did!
