I hate to be so judgmental when it comes to musical tastes and art in general, but this is a review…read morewebsite based on peoples opinions, right? Right. So, basically, the simplest way I can sum up what this style of music does to me is to explain a real scenario that happened to me recently. Driving home from a long and even more agitating day of work than usual, I decide to try to relax myself through some mind-numbing music. I figure all of the BS going through my head can be squashed best by the musical stylings of John Tesh and Kenny G and the like. After all, it is smooth jazz- meant to relax the mind and the body. That is what it is designed for. That, or inspiring musicians to create their own version of adult film soundtracks. To my surprise, and only after about 10 minutes of listening, it did nothing but agitate me more. My anxiety levels grew rapidly. My heart rate began to rise. Sweat beaded on my brow. My jaw clenched tighter and tighter. I tried my best to shake it off, but I kept getting more and more wound up. My knuckles were whitening due to the death grip I had on the steering wheel. "This music is just too... weak... too... slow... too... soft... too... " I couldn't get my mind around it, and that only brought me more stress. I couldn't even properly drive at this point- my neck being too stiff to turn and check my rear view mirrors; my body petrified. Forget adult film soundtrack, this was the soundtrack to my own personal hell on an early Monday evening. I broke free from the grasp of the cooing saxophone solo that was bleeding my ears dry and changed the channel to XRT, and what was most likely either Coldplay, The Police, or U2 (because they have a quota of those three bands taking up no less than 60% of their play list at all times), and this monotonous, predictable and honestly very boring airplay they dish out is probably more of what I needed to allow my brain to decompress. So why the two stars? Like I said- I don't want to even pretend to be an authority on music. If it gives you pleasure to listen to smooth jazz- more power to you! But unless I plan on getting all amped up to rob a liquor store or something, I won't be having my radio dial turn to 87.7 FM.

Yes, of course the old station WNUA will be miss by me and other smooth jazz fans. But, glad to find out that I can still listen to some very nice smooth jazz music on my way to work and back. Yo, who thought it was a good idea to model an entire radio station around songs everyone was sick…read moreof by 2002? I want the names and socials of everyone who signed off on this. And yeah I'm reviewing an FM radio station despite satellite radio being all the rage. But I ain't that bougie. Like a lot of older millennials, I was excited to learn that Chicago would be getting its own hip-hop and R&B "throwback" station about a year ago. I've heard similarly formatted radio in other cities and was envious. What I did not expect is that our incarnation of this would be f**kin' whack. It's become a terrible joke that every time I tune in, they're either playing 1 of 3 Ja Rule songs, "Creep" or "Waterfalls" by TLC, or "Juicy" by Biggie (y'all bogus for actually making me sick of Notorious B.I.G.). I'm convinced they spin a damn wheel of up to 5-6 songs to determine what gets played. This station is basically a time warp of B96 in 2000, when they were "Hits and Hip-Hop", but with an even shorter playlist. I can't fathom how you have up to 3 decades worth of music at your disposal, yet you chose to be this redundant. Since they did not have any on-air personalities for the first few months after their launch, I held out hope things would get better. They managed to dig up the corpse of Ed Lover, which at this point is Ken Griffey Jr. on the White Sox (a recognizable name nobody really cares about anymore), and got him to do their morning show. They paired him with the proverbial "nails on the chalkboard" voiced Jen, who's way too bubbly to be partnered with the grumbling old man that is Ed Lover, and makes for an odd sounding experience. Alas, the repetition in their music selection has not changed, and it's time to admit this is just who they are. The only reason they're not getting 1 star is because of their "BMX Four" who do mixes on Friday and Saturday nights. I've always been a fan of Julian Perez and DJ Nonstop. This is the only time you'll hear any variety on this station. Ever since Entercom took over CBS stations, a slew of bad moves have been made (nixing J in the morning on B96 and bringing back Drex, & everything they've done to 670 The Score). This was one thing that should have been a positive, but just another colossal disappointment.

Jurko is the lone survivor of Mac (now out of sports radio) & Harry (not sure where he's at. The Good kid can work with anyone. They go from 10AM- 2PM. C. Waddle & Silvy now occupy afternoon drive (2-6:PM). Still a fun listen. D. Bulls will no longer be here so I'll need to move down the dial for that one. Maybe now, Jonathan Hood can have his own full time show. E. Post Game (6-7 PM) is a good idea. If you miss a major interview that day, you'll get them in this one hour time slot. F. WHY Is Mike Murphy on this (or any) station for that matter? Fred Hubner makes it tolerable but Murphy is PLAYED OUT. This is the man who called Walter Payton "Wally" & was promptly put back in check (with a snicker of disbelief, he told Murphy "dont call me Wally"). Classic cluster when interviewing the '69 Cubs about the record (Cub Power) they did, Murphy took weirdness to a new level (even for sports talk). How awkward? Well. Like this: "Now. Were you guys uh.. singers in the. I can picture you all in the show... SOAPING UP.. and singing.. and then someone saying 'hey we gotta get this thing down on vinyl, huh?" Does he have naked pictures on someone? At least I don't have to hear that STUPID Intro he used to have years ago (with the Leisure Suits Light). If you want to bring back nostalgia, bring back the Monsters of the Midday (aka,Jiggetts & North). Now the flip side is that once he's off the air, we get the National Broadcast of Marty & McGee from 1-3PM. Now THIS is some fun radio. Those two are worth a listen.

From 5:00 to 7:00 AM they air ESPN Radio's new morning show of Keyshawn Johnson, Jay Williams and Zubin Mehenti. so from 7 AM to 10 AM is David Kaplan and Jonathan which doesn't seem like a morning radio show, as most of them are 4 hours, and either air in the time slot of 5 AM to 9 AM, or 6 AM to 10 AM. From 10 AM to Noon Carmen DeFalco and John "Jurko" Jurkovic. Noon-2:00 PM is Mike Greenberg's show that is on a 1 hour tape delay, as Mike Greenberg is doing his show from Noon to 2 PM (eastern time), and Waddle and Silvy are keeping their hours untouched. So they are going too be the only team working 4 hours. And from 6:00-8:00 is Chris Bleck and Adam Abdalla which includes the baseball show from 6:00-7:00 PM. Don't know what the plan is at 8 PM assuming will be ESPN Radio national programming where they might keep the taped delayed The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz show, don't know. And how about that even through it will be on tape delay the return of Mike Greenberg to WMVP where listeners have heard him for many years off Mike and mike with Mike Golic, that they show ended as Mike Greenberg moved on to do Up First, that he still does, and Mike Golic moved on to do Golic and Wing, with his son Mike Golic Jr, that has recently been canceled after a close to a 3 year run.

I'm very proud to say that I grew up listening to WFMT. It was constantly on in my house. And,…read morewhile many classical radio stations -nationwide or in Chicago - have moved online or dissipated, WFMT has persevered. I think that this fact speaks volumes about its leadership and listener base. The format is mainly classical music, although they do lean towards folk music on some evenings (um, no thank you). WFMT has it's own traditions, such as all commercials are read, not recorded. There are no irritating commercial breaks. And, it's funny when their stuffy voices read Red Lobster commercials. I especially enjoy celebrating the birthdays of familiar composers. And, on those days, expect to hear a day devoted to some of the more famous pieces and work of Bach/Mozart/Rachmaninoff. Today, in my house, the tradition continues: I get the chance to share my love for this station with my children. And, I want you to know that I totally could have blended my feelings for this station with some Haydn wordplay, but chose not to (you're welcome).

My favorite hosts are Carl Grapentine, Suzanne Nance, and Candice Agree. During the morning and afternoon rush hours, they play mostly shorter and lighter works that are enjoyable to listen to while driving. I can thank my parents for introducing me to classical music at an early age. They paid for piano lessons and later on, violin lessons. The violin became my primary instrument, leading to several years playing with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and later on, the NU Symphony. Because of this early exposure to classical music, I find that my life is immensely enriched by having access to it on the radio, and WFMT helps fulfill that need. I don't agree with people that say this station plays a limited selection of music or that the presenters sound monotonous. WFMT has an extremely diverse schedule, offering everything from opera to folk music, symphonic works, chamber music, and choral and organ music. Much like the changeability of Chicago weather, if you don't like what's on at the moment, come back a little while later because it will be something different.
