Me and all my l lefty, peace activist friends are tuned in every Saturday morning from 9-12, for "broke, bitter, blind, gap-toothed" radio host Chuck Mertz' "THIS IS HELL". This guy is incredible. I don't know how he's got time to do all the research for a three-hour, intensely in depth political radio show, but he does, and never misses a beat. Before that, "Breakfast with Broadway". Come on, you love show tunes. I do, and have the ovaries to admit it. After "Hell" comes Lotus Beat - bollywood, bhangra Indian music - namaste indeed, bitches!!!!! Other than that, this station is a crazy mix of jazz, rock and whatever else the DJs come up with. I love independent radio. read more

In high school, I would come home and listen to Fast'n'Loud. Oh the days of the curfew. Two hours of music I loved but couldn't hear anywhere else (this is pre-pop punk radio explosion). I even recorded some of the shows on tape. Tapes that I still have. Oh those were the days. Gotta love college radio. read more

WNUR 89.3 is the radio station God wants you to listen to. Or maybe that's 95.5 The Fish. Either way, it is amazing. I'm not really sure how I stumbled on it. I think it is because it is so close to the station that my iPod transponder is set to. Anyway - I'm driving somewhere to do something and all of a sudden this intriguing, ambient sound catches my attention. I focused on it - and then it magically swelled into an electric toy organ coupled with a beat box. It moved me - I stayed in the car a good 10 minutes longer than I meant to just to wait and hear who the hell this was. Unfortunately, I couldn't listen long enough to gather that information - however, a simple phone call to the station remedied that. Long story short - it was The Unicorns and now they are my new favorite band. I would never have known about them had I not been listening to WNUR. The segment I was listening to was playing a show they did at WNUR's studio in 2004. Its on the Internet - google it. I am sure the rest of the station's programming is great - but I am only advocating the listening of one time slot: 2-5pm on Saturdays. It is called "Airplay" and it rocks. Check it out - you will most likely hear something that you will inevitably call your favorite band. read more

There's nothing like NUR in Chicago...unless you live close enough to the UofC to get WHPK in clearly. I'm not crazy about the talk shows and the sports, but the Rock Show more than makes up for it. Little disappointed by the departure of a few DJs this year - that's the trouble with college radio. Great range of music, from insurgent country and folk to free form rock to punk to hardcore and everything in between. Not crazy about the weekend, which has super-tight programming of (mostly) community djs. read more

WNUR is a Great radio station. It's the only station in town that rivals WLUW. They do air more sports and news programming than I need, but when they play music, they play a deep and diverse variety, old and new. Always check-in with DJ 3RD RAIL & Tow Truck on "Dedicated" Mondays from 12am-5am(yes, that's very late Sunday/very early Monday...). And don't miss "The Scope" Tuesdays 10pm-12am. I DJ'd at WNUR-FM for five years, so call me biased. While a student at Northwestern, as well as a recent graduate, I DJ'd the Jazz Show, produced the Folk Show, and co-hosted Shakin' and Stompin', a program focusing on surf, rockabilly, and garage music. WNUR remains the best college radio station I've ever been involved in -- or listened to. Its jazz show is among the best in the country. Its rock show will bring to light little-known indie acts and artists before they hit any mainstream attention. And their more focused shows -- such as Continental Drift and Ska Sound System -- are well known within their genre communities. Even their unfocused shows -- the freeform blocks -- are bright spots on an otherwise dull dial in the Chicago area. When I was there, the station had a heavy focus on balancing new with older music -- 50/50 -- and most of the on-air talent really cares about the music they're playing... and the scenes they're supporting. I don't often give money to my alma mater, but when I do, a hetfy portion almost always goes to WNUR. It's well worth listening to if you're in the area -- and supporting. read more

This is Hell, a weekly leftwing news opinion program, airs on WNUR on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 1 pm. The host Chuck Mertz gets fantastic guests and does longform interviews - most of them live - that really get into detail you'll never hear on other news sources (except maybe some NPR programming - I'm thinking of Worldview or Fresh Air with Terry Gross). Chuck is longwinded - I've never heard a host ask a question that runs on over a minute long - and he can be a bit didactic and sycophantic in his questioning, but the show's guest lineup makes up for all that. As for the other programming, I don't listen to it that much. But these other people like it well enough. read more

Can't beat local... and F clear channel! I am not a terrestrial radio listener aside from NPR but I try to catch Streetbeat at 9:30p. Tuesday and Friday are good nights but James Lauer on Wednesdays is the best. He spins funky house, deep tempo, and progressive from 9:30 to 11p. Tune in and chill out. read more

Back in the late 80's, around the time I was starting to get into punk and hardcore, WNUR was there for me. Fast N Loud was hands down the best show on the station. In the early 90's, I was getting into a lot of "indie rock" or whatever you want to call it and again, WNUR was there for me. I always thought, where else can you hear Lois, followed by Napalm Death??? To me, that was great radio (and i still feel that way.) Then there was the Dan and Dave Anarchy Show, which was much like Fast N Loud, which was another awesome, mind melting show that got me into a lot of great punk bands. Then came the magical summer of 1995. Thursday night/Friday morning over the summer, there was this show called Bar Codes hosted by these two girls, who I quickly fell in love with. Their taste mirrored mine perfectly and I swore I would befriend them. Of course, it didn't happen, the summer ended and so did their show. That brings us to the WNUR of today. Between 1996 and now, I've watched it evolve from a good station that played a variety of stuff to a station that was way to obsessed with Jungle and Drum n Bass; to a complete train wreck of station that focused far too much on droney bass feedback instead of variety. A few years ago, I switched over to WNUR and found that variety had made somewhat of a comeback and they were playing some interesting stuff again. I must admit though, Fast N Loud ain't what it used to be. The kids hosting it today are focused far too much on "important" bands and not enough on truly underground and interesting punk and hardcore. Between WNUR, WLUW and WZRD, I've got my radio listening covered. read more

I love this radio station. I discovered it while living in Lincoln Park, where the reception was not entirely the greatest, so that's a bit of a minus, but nevertheless, wow. I've literally sat in my car in the parking garage in the cold for half an hour listening to this radio station because it was so good I couldn't turn it off. On weekends they often play amazing electronic music that you can NOT get anywhere else. This is the best music I've heard on the radio in the US. Often times during the week I'll tune in and it will be very progressive music of various genres that actually goes a bit too abstract or "noise-like" for me, but I can appreciate it nonetheless for its artistic quality. Yeah, this is as far from the commercial crap as you can get. read more

one thing that is enjoyable about this station is the energy and excitement that the djs usually portray; either by discussing the music in great length, or simply by having wonderful music selections. since it is relatively diverse, there is most likely something for every body. second favorite community radio station in chicago. :) read more

As a teenager in the early 80's I would visit my grandparents in the summers in Highland Park, IL, very close to Evanston. I accidentally discovered WNUR's Fast'n'Loud show. It was a godsend. Music no one else was playing on radio and there was no internet to speak of so access to this music was otherwise impossible. I heard and discovered so much great music with that show. It inspired me to go on and form my own band. I seem to remember the show's host name was Doug but I can't remember. Very fond memories. read more
