Selah Cliffs Natural Area Preserve - Where did the basalt come from?

As the lava cooled to match the temperature of the atmosphere structures developed within the lava flows. These structures are on full display in the Selah Cliffs. Millions of years later life is thriving here, and one species known as the Basalt Daisy is in high abundance here. Conservation efforts to protect and preserve both the natural landscape and native wildlife has resulted in the Selah Cliffs Natural Area Preserve. Just North of Selah driving North on Washington State Route 821 the adventure begins just past the 'Entering Yakima River Canyon' sign on the right hand side of the road. A short gravel road branching off at the truck turnaround leads to a looped gravel road with a parking lot on the side of the loop nearest the Preserve. A Discover Pass is needed to park here or incur a $99 fine. Interpretive signs along the trail throughout the Preserve aid in thinking about the natural significance and history of this area and how that connects to later human activity in the area. Millions of years from now these cliffs and the plains of the valley may be part of a lush jungle boasting life such as Saber-toothed Tigers, Jaguars, and Ocelots. Go Jaguars, nature's powerhouses of South and Central America! The creek may become a river and this once barren landscape may evolve into a green oasis similar to, though not the same as, the barren volcanic islands of Hawai'i later fostering diverse plant life once the volcanoes that form each island stop erupting. Nature can change in drastic ways. Embrace the passing of time and the changes in life it brings.

It's located a little over a mile from Sarg Hubbard park and about half a mile from El Mirador (the closest restaurant). It's a delightful little walk along the greenway path! If you're a fan of flat, nicely paved ground, with plenty of foliage, a lovely river running past and the occasional deer, this walk is for you! The park itself was donated entirely and constructed by volunteers about 25 years ago. It's got everything a kid could want - slides, bridges, stuff to climb on, high towers to look out, chains to balance on, swings, tires and small little labyrinths! You can run around or just climb all over! The place has one way in and one way out, which corrales everyone nicely. The place has definitely been used over the past 2 decades, but has plenty of miles left. There's good spots for parents to sit and observe or plenty of room to actually run with the kids, wherever your fancy! If you're looking for a good family outing spot, this one needs to be on your list!

My experience with Sarge Hubbard Park has been one of a bimodal distribution. The first experience…read morewas about 25 years ago and consisted of playing at Sarge Hubbard Park followed by a decision to never go back given that it was not well kept up and any rougher area. Fast forward to the current time where are experienced recently was an entirely different one. Like many of the other parks in the area, this place has undergone a total transformation in the past decade or so and is now very nice and a place that we will be frequenting. At the entrance to the greenway path, lies Sarge Hubbard Park. The place that is large and rather impressive, with plenty of areas for both young kids and slightly older children. Notably, there are no swing sets here, so I'm told that's now commonplace in the area. There's a large field nearby as well as a number of pathways leading out to other play areas. Not a bad transition from a place where if you wouldn't go to walk their dog a decade ago. While we were there, there were probably 40 kids playing and plenty of seating for parents. A great spot if you're heading out into parasites or just need to get away for a little bit so the kids can run off some energy.

It's in close proximity to burger king and Walmart, is a quick stop at either on your way allows you to make a picnic of the visit. Heck, the breeze was perfect and sun out today, if I had thought about it, I'd have brought a kite, book or fishing pole for my solo walk around this very clean park. There is a pond, river access, nicely paved paths, ample parking, benches and trash bins galore. I also discovered they have fitness stations located throughout the park for those wanting to combine bike riding, jogging, and a total body workout. I chose to walk around and enjoy the smells and sights of a beautiful fall day with the beautiful leaves in a range of colors while listening to my audio book. I saw restroom facilities and covered picnic areas as well as an occasional drinking fountain. It's definitely worth the stop.
