I think the definition I discovered when viewing the radio-locator.com website describes WJZR-FM perfectly! Overall the music is unobtrusive, slick, and mellow -- very soothing and uplifting !! WJZR is my "favorite" radio station in Rochester. The station absolutely lives up to the genre as the very knowledgeable and inspiring hosts certainly do play a wide variety of "smooth" jazz and easy-going popular music with a "jazzy" feel. The sound ranges from a more polished version of fusion to up-tempo elevator music and relies on heavily on synthesizers, lite-funk bass, and soprano saxophones. So many of my favorite artists are frequently featured including, Peter White, Steve Cole, Boney James, George Benson, Kenny G., David Sanborn, Jeff Lorber, Rippingtons, Michael Lington, Freddie Ravel, Sade, Michael McDonald, David Mann, and so many, many others. WJZR is where I discovered that ART GOOD (a super-great "smooth" jazz guru) and JAZZTRAKS existed. It's where I first learned about the super-duper Annual Jazz Festivals at Big Bear Lake and Catalina Island! The transmitter is located on Pinnacle Hill in Brighton, Monroe County, and its studios are located at High Falls Studios in downtown Rochester. I had no problem getting them for quite some time as I drove west towards Buffalo. A good mix of civic-minded shows, and they still make space for your typical college neophytes, albiet on non-prime hours. I listen to the World Cafe ( a syndicated show from WXPN in Philadelphia) nearly every afternoon, and make it a point to listen to several of their weekly local shows, such as: Mystery Train (an eclectic mix of new and classic rock, etc) Ritmo Brasileiro (new and classic Brasilian music) Rejuvenation (Classic soul/R&B, and all types of 'black' music of the past) As well as many others. You can also catch PHC repeats on Sunday noon, and the NPR news shows in mornings and afternoons.

One can hear classical music from all over the US. An Empire State of mind. They have unique shows like "Classical Guitar Alive" and "With Heart and Voice." Their Sunday morning programs focus on sacred music. It's refreshing. I usually listen to New Wave Wednesday and a few other morning shows (but not that awful Friday…read moremorning show), as long as the transmitter is working......... Some good variety of music gets played, and sometimes the turntable is actually working! But, wow, the high school shows are usually terrible. At some point in the day, you hear the dreaded announcement: "We now turn you over to ***** high school's radio club", followed by most of a minute of dead air, then an aural assault of about 25 dB of dynamo hum (wow, how old IS that equipment they are using??), then usually either chaos, bad enunciation, and/or poor taste in music. I've quickly come to the realization that I really don't care what kids these days are listening to, and quickly turn to another station.
