Why am I the first to review this incredible station?…read more Just when you think radio programming in Rochester was completely dead, you turn the dial over to 103.9 and it's like a deaf man hearing for the first time. Seriously, what I love about WDKX is that from its inception, it has operated 24/7, since 1974! The variety of programming is completely original and they have a great balance of contemporary music and the classic hits! With Rochester's radio dial rapidly filling up with Clear Channel clones, WDKX is a refreshing breath of fresh air! A little known fact: the call sign for WDKX stands for Fredrick Douglass, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X.

Probably my #1 favorite for listening at work. Not your usual college radio station; this one…read moreactually has professional management (via WXXI), as well as DJ's with real talent. A good mix of civic-minded shows, and they still make space for your typical college neophytes, albiet on non-prime hours. I listen to the World Cafe ( a syndicated show from WXPN in Philadelphia) nearly every afternoon, and make it a point to listen to several of their weekly local shows, such as: Mystery Train (an eclectic mix of new and classic rock, etc) Ritmo Brasileiro (new and classic Brasilian music) Rejuvenation (Classic soul/R&B, and all types of 'black' music of the past) As well as many others. You can also catch PHC repeats on Sunday noon, and the NPR news shows in mornings and afternoons.

WCMF is "Rochester's Classic Rock" and they are part of the Audacy network. Audacy is the former Radio.com. They compete with iHeart and others. The transmitter is located on Pinnacle Hill in Brighton, Monroe County, and its studios are located at High Falls Studios in downtown Rochester. I had no problem getting them for quite some time as I drove west towards Buffalo. When searching for 101.3 on yelp, I came to realize they are a corporate station, several other…read morelocal stations all owned by the same company. This would explain why, now at holiday time, they play the same three hour rotation (laced heavily with commercials) as other national radio stations; we're all hearing the same songs, over and over again. The station has some positive points, I like the John Tesh show, and I admit I'm never around to listen to the morning show, so I can't critique it. I just miss the days when there were live dj's you could call up and make requests with. And/But, there's no excuse for playing the same holiday music over and over and over again; I am writing this specifically because THIS year, when I turned it on (late November 2017) to catch the holiday music, I turned it on five times in one day...and *three of those times it was the same...dang...song...!* Not kidding. NOT exaggerating. Seriously people? I love Johnny Mathis "It's the most wonderful time of the year" but to hear it THREE of the five times I tune in, in ONE DAY?!? The next day I heard the "Feed the World" song *twice*, in literally...again no exaggeration here...three hours. The reason this is such a shame: There is a HUGE catalog of other songs to be played. I'm assuming licensing and money deals are what keeps us listening to the same rotation over and over again. Perhaps we have a mere two dozen songs here?? Seriously; count them folks! Then the longest commercials ever. A great way to drive people absolutely insane during the holidays; play the same songs over and over and over again, and in between, give us the jolly bonus of 15 minute commercials. If I end up on medication this season, I'll know who to blame.

We caught the last tour of the day conducted by long time docent Peggy - she did a very nice job talking about the different studios, the programming, and some of the technical aspects of the place. We also got to see the little seen spray paint art of Ramon Santiago that is in their loading docks. Overall a nice tour. It turns out that if you are a member you can arrange for a tour...

One of the country's best classical music stations broadcast out of upstate New York. While some…read moreclassical stations are content to recycle the same pieces endlessly, WXXI steps up with performances from Glimmerglass, Wolf Trap, Chicago, and the orchestras of Cleveland, Dallas, and Santa Fe. One can hear classical music from all over the US. An Empire State of mind. They have unique shows like "Classical Guitar Alive" and "With Heart and Voice." Their Sunday morning programs focus on sacred music. It's refreshing. There's plenty of room for podcasts like The Moth Radio Hour, Snap Judgment, along with great music. WXXI is one of the best stations in the country.
