I was in fifth grade when I first discovered WBER. A kid in middle school threatened to beat me up if I didn't call it my favorite radio station. For a long time, WBER was my favorite station. Playground intimidation aside, WBER had some incredible programming that heavily influenced my personal taste in music. New Wave Wednesdays, The Indie Show, The Universal Buzz Radio, First Impressions, and the Spotlight Review were among my favorite programs on this station between starting around 1995.
I was one of those kids who would tune in at specific times to hear my favorite DJs sets, or my friends when they had airtime. The Top 100 Song Countdown was one of my favorite program of each year, just before New Year's Eve. I made many a mix tape from broadcasts trying to track down that obscure song or artist. Bands like The Buggles, Boomtown Rats, Blue Clocks Green, 1000 Homo DJ's, Orbital, The Smiths, Dinosaur Jr, and Portishead, were just a few of the mainstays that worked their way into my own music library. WBER was also one of the first stations that I can remember that streamed over the internet, something I took advantage of when I was outside of their broadcasting area.
When I was in high school, the programming started to change, perhaps under pressure from stations like The Nerve and The Zone, or a desire to change things up. A few shows were dropped, shows like Rant appeared and the heavy rotation lost me a bit. I couldn't tell if I was just getting older, or losing touch, but I started listing to WBER less and less. After Joey ended the Indie Show, I stopped tuning into WBER for awhile. I felt like we were childhood friends who had grown apart.
I'll return home for few weeks at a time and I always try to give WBER another listen. For whatever reason, I just can't get down on it like I used to. Some of the classic 'BER tracks are still in rotation, but overall, I'm not into it as much. Maybe I'm getting too old, or to far along a different path to really have my ears open like I used to. I'll forever love WBER for the influence it had on me, but we're going to be seeing other people for the time being. Who knows, maybe one of us will come around one day and realize where we went wrong. read more
