The Pickwick Place

The Pickwick Place

A Slice of Simple Life at Pickwick Place - Bucyrus, Ohio…read more If you're road-tripping from Columbus to Lake Erie and craving a pause from the gas stations and fast food chains, make a detour to Pickwick Place in Bucyrus, Ohio. It's more than just a pit stop--it's a charming taste of Ohio's heartland, served up with a side of fresh jam and a blackberry lemonade slush. A Market Made for Food Lovers Pickwick's farmer's market is a celebration of all things local and delicious. Picture this: crates overflowing with vibrant, seasonal produce--ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, juicy peaches, and sweet corn picked that very morning. Alongside the produce, you'll find a bounty of locally made goods--jams and jellies in every flavor imaginable, homemade pickles, fresh-baked breads, and dressings that taste like something your grandma whipped up in her kitchen. And let's talk about the fry pies. If you know, you know. If you don't--these handheld pockets of flaky pastry filled with gooey fruit fillings are reason enough to turn off the highway. They're my personal favorite indulgence here. Good luck stopping at just one. The market also stocks frozen meats from a local butcher, so if you've got a cooler in the trunk, you can take a little taste of Pickwick home to your own grill. Handcrafted Charm in Every Corner Step into the second building and you're met with a world of homemade crafts and rustic decor. It's like walking into a Pinterest board come to life--wooden signs, hand-stitched items, seasonal decorations, and more. Whether you're looking for a cute centerpiece or just browsing for inspiration, you'll find something to warm your home and heart. A Garden of Sunshine Out by the greenhouse, nature puts on her Sunday best. When we visited, sunflowers, zinnias, and wildflowers painted the landscape in bold, beautiful color. And here's the best part--you can grab a jar and some cutters, stroll through the garden, and build your own bouquet of fresh-cut flowers. It's a peaceful, slow moment in the middle of your day--and it smells amazing, too. Sit. Sip. Savor. If you're feeling a little hungry (again), Pickwick's small café has you covered with sandwiches and comfort foods that are perfect for a quick but satisfying lunch. Pair your meal with one of their frozen slush drinks, like the tart and tangy apple cider or the refreshing blackberry lemonade--trust me, it hits the spot on a summer day. Whether you're stocking up on fresh goods, hunting for homemade treasures, or just craving a peaceful stroll through blooming flowers, Pickwick Place is a reminder to slow down and enjoy the simple things. So next time you're heading north to the lake, carve out a little time to pull off the road and experience this gem tucked away in Bucyrus. Take the Trip. Your next adventure is waiting--maybe with a fry pie in hand.

Coons Candy - First Visit…read more Let's go ahead and name what some of us have probably thought: pulling up to a place called Coons Candy comes with hesitation -- especially as a Black customer. It's an unspoken (and sometimes spoken) moment of pause, wondering what kind of experience you're walking into. But curiosity -- and a soft spot for old-school sweets -- led us to check it out. To my surprise, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with friendly smiles and offered samples of fudge, toffee, and a few other homemade treats. That immediately softened the moment and brought on a bit of nostalgia -- felt like walking into one of those general stores my MawMaw would take me to, or a Cracker Barrel stop on a road trip. The store itself is exactly what you'd expect from a small-town candy shop: shelves packed with retro candies, novelty drinks, locally made honey and syrups, quirky gifts, and yes -- edible bugs. It's cozy and cluttered in a fun, old-school way. We left with: * Boba Vida popping pearls (dark cherry) * Sugar Daddy, Victory sticks, Stallion candy smokes, raspberry & green apple sticks * Locally made honey * A mix of glass-bottle sodas: * Sioux City Ginger Beer + Prickly Pear * Reading Draft Honey Cream * Drive-In Cherry Limeade * Nehi Peach * Ginger Strawberry tea * Hot & Spicy Ginger Beer This is definitely a place for folks who love that nostalgic candy-store vibe and don't mind digging through shelves of old favorites and funky surprises. ‍ Final take: It was a mixed bag. The selection was fun and the staff made us feel welcome. But the name? It sticks -- and not in a sweet way. That hesitation doesn't go away entirely, and I'd understand if someone else passed on the visit for that reason alone. I'm glad I saw it for myself. Would I go back? Maybe. Would I recommend it? Depends who's asking.

We stopped by today & had to buy some of the delicious fudge! Utterly charming store. I will never…read moredrive past again. Wonderful chocolates, hard candies & so much cuteness! Plus, really sweet people. I'm so glad we stopped! If you have a problem with name, please get some professional help. You're ridiculous. It's their last name.
