We got 3 quotes to replace ~60 ft of fence on a slope. It needed retaining wall of 18" to 4 ft at the bottom due to the slope and shape of the ground. Scott's was the lowest of the 3 quotes so we hired him. He did an amazing job. The fence looks terrific, and the retaining wall looks extremely strong, exactly what we needed to make sure the fence will last many years. The cost ended up being around 6-7% higher than the estimate, but he warned us about that ahead of time, and it was because of legitimate uncertainty about how much retaining wall he would need to build, not really knowing until he started the work. He's friendly and a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended! We did have to wait about a month between signing the agreement and paying deposits, until he could do the work, but I don't think that's unusual and we weren't in a rush. read more

They arrived on time and did the work within a few days. The team cleaned up nicely in the end. The crew was good and Scott was present on site to direct them. It took 2.5 days. Prior to hiring a contractor for your home, it's highly recommended that you get at least a couple of estimates so you understand the market, each contractor's skill sets and general price ranges and so you can pick someone you're comfortable with hiring. We are SO glad that we did just that because we 100%+ know that we are NOT HIRING this company for the reasons outlined below. UNRELIABLE First, this company is not reliable. I scheduled an appointment with Bob With, owner of With Fencing, for 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013. In my conversation with Bob, I stated that it was very important that he arrive close to 10:30 a.m. because we were missing work and had to return to the office as soon as possible. Bob explicitly stated that he understood these simple instructions and would be at our home at around 10:30 a.m. After waiting for 40 minutes and not receiving any calls from Bob, we realized that Bob was a complete no show, and we left the house for work. RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL Second, Bob is extremely unprofessional and rude. I called him at 5:30 pm and inquired why he did not arrive nor call us to say he was cancelling our appointment. Instead of sincerely apologizing, Bob immediately put the blame on us! He went on the defensive and blamed ME for scheduling an appointment with him. He said he should not be held responsible for running late and not showing up. He said he tried calling. That's when I caught him in his lie-- he called 50 minutes AFTER our scheduled appointment! Not only was he trying to make poor excuses, but he was manipulating and misrepresenting the truth. During our call, he continued to raise his voice at me and made poor, unprofessional excuses. He said he had too many bids and simply did not have time to meet his obligations and appointment with us. I couldn't even get a word in because he literally went off on the phone. How is he still running a business? Moreover, the two passengers in my car were witnesses to our conversation (as I had him on speaker through my car). They were completely shocked at Bob's attitude and after the conversation ended, they said they could not take him (or his business) seriously. None of us will be hiring him for any contractor work. POOR BUSINESS PRACTICE Third, I am deeply disappointed by his demeanor and the way he runs his business. He was unapologetic and insincere. I cannot get past the fact that he blamed us and started going off about how busy he was and how customers should not expect him to give notice if he is not going to show up. I'm guessing he wasn't educated on common courtesy nor has he ever been held accountable for his actions. RECOMMENDATIONS I understand that With Fencing has a few 4 or 5 stars on Yelp, but please do give weight to the mediocre ratings on this Yelp page. After this recent experience, I would not recommend this business to any of my family, friends and colleagues. If you would like to go with other fencing companies, I recommend that you get estimates from: - M&L Construction; - McGibbon Construction; and - A-1 Fencing. The first time I needed two wood retaining walls replaced and a new redwood fence to be constructed. I got two bids. These guys aren't that good. After looking at our fences, I would've gone with another service, even if I had to pay a little more money. Bob, the owner, is a forgetful guy who tries to make up prices on the spot mainly because he improperly measures the plans in the first place. Here are some other annoyances about With Fencing. 1) We had asked for the posts to built higher so we could put caps on top. When I noticed that the posts weren't being extended, I asked Bob and he was like, "oh, I forgot...well we could just extend the post by nailing another one on top". This would look terrible so we skipped it. 2) We had asked to build a gate along our back fence. They forgot of course and then tried to tell us it wasn't possible to put a gate in that spot. They eventually built a gate, which isn't integrated that well and now it sags a little. 3) We asked them to build a dog run fence to be 4' high so our dogs could not jump out. Since we have a sloped back yard, the fence was was going to be stepped down in sections. After completion, the fence in one section is about 4' high on the front end and on the back end is about 2.5' feet high. Our dogs can still jump out. 4) When constructing the posts, they do not use a continuous piece of wood. So, if you want need an 10' post, they use an 8' post and tack on a 2' piece on top of that, instead of cutting a 12' foot post down to size. Overall, the craftsmanship of their work is sub par. Some posts aren't cut level leaving gaps. Some posts aren't straight. I believe they try to get in and out as quickly (and cheaply as possible). Since Bob wasn't there on the last day, I withheld $500 from payment til I talked these issues over with Bob. He has yet to call me back. Some service. I would definitely not go with these guys again or refer them to anyone else. read more

He grunted that I should hold one end of the measuring tape and had me help him measure all the fence areas--no big deal, but all other fencing companies were able to measure on their own. Left without saying a word, and I later got a quote in the mail with almost no details on it, and no follow up whatsoever. Scheduling was easy, and they arrived on time. They were professional, efficient, and neat. Gosh these guys did a great, quick and reasonably priced job. Our fence was pretty straight forward - 6 foot tall redwood - but they built a solid retaining wall below it and addressed an awkward side fence situation next to it. I was nervous at the beginning and then saw the guys out there with their levels making sure each board was just right. One note, you get what you ask for. We just wanted a simple fence and we got it. I wish I had spent a little more time thinking through the framing and specifying the wood to use/layout/etc. Ultimately it looks good but I don't think I was prepared for the pressure treated framing. By the way, a friend who is a contractor suggested that we make sure the ends of all pressure treated wood is treated (otherwise it has no value in terms of preventing rot). With Fencing did that at our request, but I'm not sure that is standard procedure. Something to consider. Better yet, don't use pressure treated wood as that stuff is bad for the world. We were stuck with it already being there and figured, since it is there, we should make sure it served its purpose. read more

Needed a fence quote after my back fence fell over due to the severe winds we had experienced a few months ago. The receptionist I spoke with was not very helpful and I had to speak with the estimator himself to schedule my quote to meet with his schedule. Upon receiving the estimator's call he assumed that I didn't live in my house just because the area code I was calling from was different from the current county I live in (925 vs. 650). He was very short and curt over the phone. My husband waited at home to welcome the estimator to our house. My husband stated the estimator was rude and unprofessional as he was very quick and didn't shake hands with my husband as if he couldn't be bothered. Quote was decent but with the lack of professionalism, we decided not to enlist their services. I wouldn't recommend this place at all! Front desk and estimator didn't seem to impress my husband or me at all. Husband and I used to work in customer service jobs so we knew we deserved to be treated better and this company seemed to lack decent service. If I could, I wouldn't have this company a 1 star rating but instead a ZERO star rating! read more

We contacted several contractors to discuss our deck project. We went with With Fencing primarily because they said they could do the work within a week and because they were the first to respond with a quote. They did an amazing job! They arrived at the job on time each morning. They obviously have been working together for a long time. They were extremely well organized and efficient. It was like watching a well choreographed performance. Each person had a specific job which they did quickly and professionally. The deck they built was more beautiful than we had envisioned. We went with a high quality manufactured product for the floor and redwood for the railing. The redwood was from Beronio Lumber and was a nice red shade. The flooring of the deck was perfectly cut, predrilled, and spaced. It looks beautiful. When unexpected issues came up, i.e., a rotted window frame that got in the way of the deck, they dealt with it with ease and went the extra yard to take care of the problem. They also were open to small alterations in the design. We couldn't have been happier. I would highly recommend these guys. They know what they are doing and did a great job! read more

I highly recommend With Fencing. Several months ago, I called them to give us an estimate on repairing or replacing our fence. Scott came out to look at the job when I was at work. He called me and said that they actually built our fence 20+ years ago and he remembers doing the job with his dad. He said he had a picture of the job somewhere. By the time I got home, Scott had gone back to the office in Brisbane, found a color photo of this job from 20+ years ago, and left it for me in an envelope along with the estimate. I was impressed. I was also pleased that the fence didn't need to be replaced; it just needed a few repairs, which is a testament to With's workmanship. Fast forward a few months and I now have a crazy Vizsla-mix puppy who can jump the 4-foot fence and does so every chance she gets to go visit the neighbors. Because she could only get over on our side (the side with the railing), I was climbing over the fence 5+ times a day and hoisting a 45-pound dog over the fence and back into our yard. It was starting to get old (and realy starting to hurt my old-lady back). I emailed Scott to ask me what my options were. I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Scott told me what to buy at Home Depot and agreed to come out when he was next in the neighborhood and install redwood lattice fence toppers on top of the existing fence. He also was glad to break down the bid for me so that I could see how much of the cost was removal and how much was construction.
