Love this tattoo shop! During my first trip to Salem, I was really wanting a fun, spooky tattoo. I walked into this shop and was stoked to find two flash books FULL of spooky art! There were so many to choose from and I finally decided on this adorable black cat. The artist, George, did a great job and I love how it turned out! The shop overall had a very nice and clean atmosphere. The people up front were super friendly and helpful. As a walk-in, they were able to get me in right away, which I really appreciated. If I had more time, I would have gotten some more flash. I can't get over all of the amazing, spooky flash they had! Amazing experience! Came on Halloween day for a flash tattoo! Waited in line before they opened for only 15 minutes. Got a spot and within an hour and a half I was in the chair! (They have an amazing text system so you don't have to wait in the shop, I wandered around with my family while I waited) I ended up getting the owner, Natan. I was SO ecstatic! The drawing is what I chose from the flash book, although I wasn't too thrilled for how heavy it was...but he made it SO much better, he customized it a tad, added some color, some spooky lines, and shading. I am in love! I get to go home with an amazing memory of Salem. What they do here is awesome, nowhere else have I traveled offered something like this even though I wish I could get tattoos all over the world, Witch City was awesome! My friend and I decided to get matching tattoos last minute on a Thursday in October. We did not think we would get in anywhere, but, boy were we wrong! We saw Witch City Ink recommended multiple times in the Spooky in Salem facebook group, so decided to call and ask for a wait time. They said it would be 1 - 2 hours. Well, we arrived at 5:30 pm and within an hour we were both tattooed! In October, you have to choose from a folder of flash tattoos and the minimum price is $150. With how busy they are, they deserve the price! We love our tattoos and how fun and efficient the tattoo artists are! I didn't catch the name of the man at the front desk, but he was also so nice and helpful! I would highly recommend Witch City Ink! read more

Before getting the kindergarten style drawing on my forearm. I was very excited to get a tattoo at this place. I asked for the tatto to be the exact same size as their Halloween special tattoo binder. The tattoo artist made the stencil, which to me looked like the art size on the binder. A little on on one of the corners of the circle but she promised will fix it. She started making her school project on my arm and I noticed the circle and lines were very wiggly. I tried to be nice and pin point certain stuff as the school project was being finished. The artist seemed a little touchy as if I was criticizing her. So I thought to my self let her finish, maybe it'll turned out great. Anyways she ended up making the tattoo her way and not like in the picture in the binder. I took me a little while to process whatever I had done in my forearm. And then asked her, after she finished with a friend of mine that got another school project on her arm. I spoke with the "tattoo artist" and expressed the stuff in the tattoo that needed fixing and to see if she could do it. Her answer was this things are supposed to be discussed before making the tattoo. Even though I did pin point some stuff as she was making her school drawing. And her offended face did not allowed me to continue. She did nothing and gave a little attitude towards me. To finish this story, this place might have other artists that are worthy of the money spent. But this particular artist, I feel should seek other job professions as I think she was not born to be a tattoo artist or any type or art related job. I wish I took a pic of the original art. But here's Heather's school project. I'll probably end up finding someone else that can help cover and straighten the lines and a nice round circle on this... so annoyed I was. Went to Witch City Ink for the first time, my appointment was with Natan. They called a few days in advance to confirm my appointment and made sure I was aware of all the policies and procedures. Natan called me the morning of, to ask a few follow up questions to ensure he was as prepared as he could be when I arrived. At my appointment, the office staff was very friendly, the shop was comfortable and cozy, and Natan was all ready with his drawing. He was terrific, the 5 hours flew by! I was completely blown away by his work too. I let him decide the best placement and flow and he completely hit this one out of the park. I got my first tattoo at Witch City Ink last week, and I'm so glad I did! I've been waffling with the idea of getting a tattoo for the past 17 years or so, but every time I walked into a tattoo parlor, I was too intimidated and would lose my nerve. When I walked into Witch City, they were playing a song by my favorite '80's alternative band - a good sign! The atmosphere was friendly and inviting. The place had a positive vibe and it felt "right." I was able to get an appointment for 90 minutes later. Matt Maguire did my tattoo also (like Deanna M.'s). Matt sketched my tattoo quickly from an image that I brought in. He was friendly and chatted with me as he worked, even when his colleagues walked past and joked that he was "mean" (he was perfectly nice to me!). He let my sister sit in for moral support. While I was being tattooed, the shop started playing New Age music. It's far from my favorite genre, but it was very relaxing and helped me get through my first tattoo experience. In short, I'm very pleased with my tattoo. I got what I wanted, and Matt explained tattoo aftercare to me. He even provided me with the parlor's aftercare sheet to take home. Witch City Ink put my fears of tattoos and tattoo parlors to rest. The staff were very friendly and the shop was visually pleasing. It's a welcome addition to Salem. I would recommend it to anyone thinking about getting a tattoo. Matt told me that tattoos are addictive, and I think he's right - I'm already considering getting another one! He really pays attentions to detail and has to be one of the best artists around All the artists here are very cool and easy to talk to. Had a great experience here last night. First, let me say that I have several tattoos, many of which were done at shops or by people that were just kind of cold feeling, douchey, judgemental, or not very professional. In the last year, I found a shop near my home in NY that made me feel respected, and I've decided I'll never get tattooed in a place or by a person that makes me feel like shit ever again. I ducked into a shop in New Orleans with some girlfriends last November and I pulled them both out with me; I WILL NOT get tattooed by impatient, inflexible assholes anymore. So, I'm in Salem this past weekend with my oldest niece to celebrate her 30th bday, and after a day of cool touristy stuff, we both decide we'd love a non-tacky Salem tattoo (quote by Giles Corey: "more weight"). We walked in at 7ish. First good sign: VERY nice/clean shop. We were told by the courteous woman at the front that although they close at 8, and their only artist still in (Larry) was working on a large piece until around 9, he'd be willing to stay and do our relatively simple tattoos. Second good sign: super accommodating. We went off to get a bite and Larry called us when he was ready. Third good sign: Larry was the consummate professional. Stayed until almost 11 helping us (and by the way has a super long commute home, which he did not even mention until we asked if he was from the area). Changed font, size, and placement multiple times until we were, and sometimes he was, happier with the result. We walked out on cloud nine - we have wanted matching tattoos for years, and everything about the experience, start to finish, made us feel great. I chose WCI for my first tattoo, and I'm so glad I did! Everyone is very professional and the environment is relaxed and professional, with small semi-private rooms for tattooing, unlike the large open spaces seen on the TLC reality shows. I've been searching for an image of a butterfly in the celtic style for weeks. After 5 minutes on google Gwendolyn, the shop coordinator, found the perfect image, which I somehow missed all this time! Molly McKinnon was able to take the image, which was a small photo of a piece of jewelry, and recreate it into a perfect image for my tattoo. Molly was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. It was my first tattoo so she prepped me on what to expect before she went to work She recommended that I not go with the color combination I suggested because they would blend together and look like mud. I'm glad she did that, rather than blindly give me what I asked for without explaining the consequences. The colors we went with are nice and bright. I love my tattoo--it's exactly what I wanted and it's also very feminine, which is important to me. Molly is a true artist--the butterfly's antenna are a little squiggly and adorable. She took a photo of a static piece of silver and turned it into an endearingly organic piece. The way she handled the celtic knotwork in particular is exquisite. Every time I go in to Witch City they're playing new wave music--this is always a plus in my book. I'm a big believer in serendipity. When my sister and I went in a few weeks ago for her first tattoo they were playing her favorite band Madness. When I went in for my Celtic tattoo they were playing the Pogues. I'm always grateful for a "good sign"! Molly carefully went over the after-care instruction sheet with me. The entire staff are very adament about clients calling or coming in anytime with questions or concerns. It's nice to have that support in place. I LOVE Witch City Ink. I didn't know what to expect but it was a positive experience all around. I finally have the spiritually meaningful tattoo I've been trying to envision for years. They'll try and bully you into getting work your not comfortable with. Here's why. I emailed with all requested details, I was asked to email someone else (the artists directly, which is fair. To give her credit, she was on holiday at the time and answered anyway, which was nice.) the artist then asked me to call the parlor, then the parlor said they didn't have any idea what I was talking about, and could I email the artist back? Which I did. And then the artist said "she didn't think I was ready to commit". Dear lord! Why not? After I've clearly run around desperately trying to coordinate your business for you. She was also unwilling to seriously discuss the tattoo with me, or show me a design BEFORE THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT! AND before I'd already put down a hefty deposit! I understand times are tough but BEWARE, this place will try and strong arm you into getting work you are not happy with. read more

I have been getting tattooed at Witch City Ink for the last 7 years. The last three years this has become my primary shop. I've been tattooed by Steve, K. Lenore, by someone who worked at the shop seven years ago (I forget their name), and quite extensively by Jaesun (he's done my memorial tattoos, my stomach piece, and is currently doing my chest piece). I've even had a session with a visiting artist who was there for a weekend. I have 30+ tattoos on my body at this time, I've been getting tattooed for 7 years (they were my second-fourth tattoos when I first started), I've worked with artists in North Carolina, Vermont, Japan, Boston, and Salem, and in my opinion, Witch City Ink is the best Tattoo Shop in all of New England, definitely the best shop I've ever been too. The staff is super friendly, they really care about the people they tattoo on, the work is off the utmost quality, and each time I get tattooed there I am completely blown away by the work I get done. Some of the best people I've ever met, the best artists I've ever seen, work here, and coming to this shop every few months or seeing them at a Tattoo Con is now like seeing good friends (my wife also gets her work done here as well, and I've turned several friends onto this shop). I could not recommend a Tattoo Shop more highly than Witch City Ink. If you want a great experience by artists who care about the work they do and the people who come to their shop, this is the place to get tattooed. read more

To be fair I've never stepped foot in there but tried getting consultation. They didn't have the time open for me so i inquired via email. I was told to provide them with the art work I wanted. When I sent it in they had said it was too small. That they had to increase the size of the lettering and that it would cost me $400. This wasn't my first tattoo... I went to another tattoo shop that was local. And laughed when I told them about my situation. I didn't have to compromise with that tattoo shop on what I wanted and paid roughly $150 and I am super happy with it. Just be careful when they bump you like this. read more

Went there for a tattoo on my forearm - something I designed myself. I was really excited about the tattoo, I looked at their website and saw some talented artwork and artists. When I got there, it was a nice, clean place. However, the artist named Steve who did my tattoo must have been in a bad mood (that or he was a complete d*ck) and was absolutely miserable during the tattoo. That, and he rushed through the tattoo as fast as he could and did a poor job. The worst part was his personality. As I sat for over an hour getting this tattoo, I tried to make small talk. He huffed and gave short, sarcastic answers, mostly one-word. Like he couldn't even be bothered to talk to me. I really hope the owner reads reviews on Yelp. Because he should really see what an @$$ this Steve guy was and how poorly he represents the rest of the business. In contrast, I saw another, female artist doing a tattoo, she was talkative, patient (it was an intricate tattoo). I so wish I had that artist, maybe my score would be different. read more

I walked in here today to get a consult on two tattoo ideas. I spoke with both Steve and Molly. I got my smaller tattoo done today by Molly, and would love to go back to her for the bigger one I am wanting to get later. Molly was quick, gentle and did my tattoo perfectly. She had great ideas for the one I want to do at a later date, and I will defintely be going back here for that one, by either Molly or Steve. The environment of the shop is laid back, casual cool with the usual Salem witchy details in side (but not over done or gimmicky). I went with a friend and was lucky to get in with Molly even though I didn't have an appointment. This was my first tattoo and Molly was so wonderful to explain everything before she started. I had an idea of what I wanted and after explaining it to her, she was able to sketch it out perfectly. She had wonderful suggestions about coloring and letter style. It wasn't as painful as I had feared but I believe this was in part due to Molly's expertise and careful handling. This was a wonderful experience for me and so much better than I had even imagined. Went to get my 15th tattoo at Witch City for my first visit there. Tried for Lenore but ended up with Larry. First I would like to say that to be experimenting on customers who have expectations of nice work should not be allowed!! So, let me start by saying that I have 12 tattoos. In the past I've had work done at Chameleon in Harvard Square, by an amateur artist who was an ex boyfriend, and at Mainely Custom in Kittery, ME. All of those were awesome, fun experiences. Witch City is the only bad experience I have ever had getting tattooed (with the exception of one dumb tattoo that I regret, but that was my own fault for getting a dumb tattoo). No one really seemed friendly any of the 3 times when I walked in the door at Witch City Ink. Not sure what was up but the first time I showed up for my consult, there was some sort of problem at the shop and Steve, my artist, kept pacing behind the desk snapping, "Jesus Christ, I can't do this shit today," while I waited uncertainly in the lobby wondering if I should leave or not. Then he came over and unceremoniously barked, "Give me your arm!" At this point, I now feel I should just have walked out without beginning the tattoo. Obviously this is a review and just my personal feelings about my experience, but I wanted to share because I came here based on having heard great things about the work done here, and I ended up with art that I needed to actually have fixed elsewhere. I would not want that to happen to anyone else. Steve unfortunately came across to me as rude, condescending, and uninterested in how happy I was with art that would be on me forever. He didn't ask me much about what I wanted or had in mind, and I regret not leaving when I started to pick up on his lack of interest in the work. The environment and cleanliness of this place was fine and it seemed like a well run business. My review comes from the tattoo artist themself. When getting something permanent on your body it is ideal to feel as comfortable and confident as you can right ??! And that's mainly ur tattoo artists job. They were honestly just awkward and extremely condescending the whole time towards me, at one point I was about to storm out of the store because I was getting fed up but I had already paid the deposit. Now for the worst part of my experience, never on any of my photo submissions and references of the tattoo I wanted was there shading, because I wanted it simple. I'm also new to getting tattoos as this is my second one so I'm not very used to what different techniques feel like etc. Mind you my mother and I got matching ones and she went first. And when they're done they proceeded to tell me they shaded in parts of it to make it look "cooler" and so my moms and I looked a little different. I'm sorry what. Going into a tattoo shop with certain expectations only to be disappointed by a newer tattoo artist. Have read all the reviews, you cant make everyone happy all the time. As with reading about any place and reviews I tend to pay attention to the dates of the reviews. This was my third tattoo with Jaesun, the first sitting of a custom piece. His art background gives him a hand and an eye for detail and color. The staff I've dealt with has been very friendly and accommodating. I get many compliments on his work, so I grabbed a few of his cards to give if people ask.
