We stopped into The Black Veil Studio while walking around and window shopping. The vibe inside of The Black Veil Studio encompassed Salem and all of it's witchiness. The interior was so beautiful and scary, but in a classy way. There were unique book editions and artwork everywhere. I took home an Ozzy Osbourne post card that fit perfectly on my refrigerator. I actually didn't realize that they are also a tattoo studio - that would have been cool to check out, but I was so distracted and intrigued with the front of the store that I never even noticed. The vibes here are great. The items are definitely on the pricier end but had an interesting selection and fits the Salem vibes. The sitting area is a really nice spot to take photos and the signs encourage you to do so! There's a tattoo parlor in the back, though didn't go to that area. Service was nice. This is for the shop. We are from California and visited the shop in October. I could have skipped "Salem" and just spent the whole day at the shop. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. I purchased a print while there. Fast forward and my sister in law fell in love with it. I decided to order her one for Christmas. I placed my order and selected expedited delivery. I got the shipping notice from black veil. It sat with usps for 7 days. I was told to contact the shipper. I sent an email with my information. This was a week before Christmas and I did not expect a response for several days. I had a reply with in 2 hours from Sadie letting me know that it had shipped on their end and it seemed to be an issue with usps but that they were sending another one to make sure I received it. I got the print a few days later. Not sure what happened with the original one. The customer service was above and beyond. Just the same as when I was there in person. I can not say enough how magical this place is and in my dreams will get a tattoo one day lol. read more

The only reason I'm giving 3 stars is because of how impossible it is to get ahold of anyone here. Matt and Ryan are truly one-of-a-kind artists and it's completely understandable why they'd be in such high demand, but with that said, they really should find a way to better communicate with potential clients, and I say that will the utmost respect. I've been fortunate enough to have been tattooed twice by them at the Brooklyn Oddities Markets and always had wonderful experiences. I've wanted to get a larger piece on my arm from them for a few years now, but every time I email them I never hear anything back. I understand their policy of not taking every tattoo request --and I respect it, they have an aesthetic that they specialize in and as artists they have the right to choose whom they'd prefer to work with. But if the rejection process is nothing more than ignoring a client's email, I can't say that's very considerate. How is anyone supposed to plan their trip to Salem and book with them in advance (like the website says to do) if they never inform you that your tattoo request has been passed on? Of course Covid has made things awful for everyone and made even the simplest of tasks rather difficult, I don't type this without that in mind, but I have been trying to reach out to inquire about an appointment since Pre-Covid and have not been able to get a response, and if you call the shop to ask how long the wait for a tattoo could possibly be, no one answers the phone. Guys, I love your work, and you are both such sweet nice dudes, and I know my little 3-star review isn't going to mean much to hurt your thriving business (and I would never want it to!), but I'm not the only person who has left this kind of yelp review, and there's just gotta be a better way to handle the monsoon of emails I'm sure you get every day. Since posting my last review in January, I have gotten 2 more tattoos from here, both by Matt. One was about palm sized, the other is a thigh piece. I paid the $100 to secure my appointment, which I was hesitant about (only because this does not go towards the tattoo) but did since I was doing a larger piece. To my surprise, you are given the full day for the tattoo. Unlike other shops I have experienced, where I put money down for the tattoo, the artist was only able to tattoo me for a few hours tops. This was a bummer because I had saved my money and hoped to get more done. So glad I paid the booking fee here! In four hours, we got the majority of my thigh done (exactly what I was hoping to accomplish). I can't wait to go back and add to it. I am pleased more and more every time I come here, and have nothing but good things to say about this shop. I don't anticipate going to anyone else for future work! read more

Kind of odd that they don't have a recent review considering they're so busy! So i just wanted to drop a love note bc this place literally made my vacay 10000 x's better! Maybe it was weird that I saw them on tv years ago for a special on TV, Most Haunted Places In The US.. or something to that sort. Fast forward to this past September I decided to visit my friend who just so happens to live in Salem and at the same time their Tattoo Shop's page randomly popped up on my IG's algorithm..and they say no one is "watching". I had this idea for a tattoo in the works for 10+ years but no one I felt back where I lived could draw out what I was putting down.. until I saw Ryan's work. Incredible. The Twins in general are extremely talented and although their work is similar.. it's completely different. Just look and you'll know what i mean lol. Anyway.. the nitty-gritty of it is they only book a month ahead and there's a $100 deposit/drawing fee that DOESN'T go toward the session.. There are guidelines on the website that you can look over, and the tattoo must be approved by the artist. I think it saves both sides time and energy. I was in touch with Josh a lot who does the scheduling.. he was awesome and very courteous and efficient. I liked that he was quick to reply with scheduling and questions. But of course.. I still haven't spoke to Ryan which worried me bc all I told Josh was a basic outline of the theme and design I wanted.. what if i go in, it's nothing like i imagined?! Welp the day came and I finally got to meet the twins and Josh and they were all exactly as I had imagined. Super polite and just a great energy...and the sketch of my tattoo.. I was blown away. Couldn't imagine it in my wildest dreams. Not to mention he knocked it out in 5 hours constantly making sure I was ok. It's such an amazing piece. Worth every penny. In fact it's so gorgeous that i've considered lasering my other small tattoo's on the opposite arm bc it doesn't even compare Hahaha. I wish they would do coverups but they do not which is understandable. I would definitely love to add to my arm and eventually make it into a sleeve so another 11 hour plane ride seems like a small price to pay to get work done by him. Oh! and their shop! just stop by and you'll be memorized. I won't go into much detail bc you'll need to see it for yourself, but they also sell items from various Artisans. I think I spent $100 on candles and drawings alone and I was going to fight TSA if they tried to touch it. read more

My friend came up from Philadelphia to celebrate my birthday with me in Salem, where I was to hoping to get a tattoo. I really wanted some artwork from the Black Veil for a while, but their schedule was packed when I called a month earlier (they book months out at a time it seems, so plan accordingly). Even though I couldn't get an appointment in advance, we did decide to drop in while we were in town since we had never seen the shop before. While we were there, my friend asked the receptionist if there was any chance they had a cancelation/opening. She said someone might have some time, but the schedule was pretty packed, which of course I expected since all of the artists work there is superb. She reached out to one of the artists, Nathan, to see if he had time, and came by and inquired about the design I was looking for. He listened and said would give me a call later in the day to discuss if there were any openings. I fully expected to be walking away without a tattoo from them. But then, a woman who was waiting for her tattoo, looked at my friend and I and said she was from the city and would be happy to give me her tattoo appointment as she could come over anytime vs. my friend and I who were visiting from out of state. I couldn't believe it, I'm still stunned and grateful at her gesture. Nathan agreed to the switch and he started to work on my design. He came up with the original drawing pretty quickly after talking with me. It was an excellent start, especially considering we had just met each other 15 minutes earlier, part of the project involved covering over my scars and I had a specific style in mind. When he came back with the second draft, it was even better and he showed me ideas of where it would lay on my skin. He added some more details and gave me feedback that I wouldn't of thought of that would make the tattoo less than it could be and detract from the beauty. That type of feedback from the artist is really important I've found, because it shows the artist knows their craft. While the customer has the idea of what they want, it is up to the artist and their vision to make it pop. Nathan was focused and quiet while he worked on me, though when he did talk, it was excellent commentary, story sharing or passing along tidbits to knowledge that was fascinating. He was funny and sweet and I really enjoyed my time receiving his work. I'm proud to display his art on my arm, he did a fantastic job. The room he worked in was downstairs and just gorgeous. Really, the entire Black Veil studio is stunning, the shop provides a perfect backdrop for any photo. What you see on their Instagram is what you will be able to enjoy when you visit. They have the sweetest little preserved kitten in a jar on one of their bookshelves, make sure to check it out. They also have a great selection of their artwork for sale, t-shirts, pins, books and of course, original prints to also buy. The staff is open, honest, and friendly. Even though I wasn't being tattooed by the owners Matthew or Ryan, they both came out at separate times to say hello and briefly chat with my friends and I. It is a little detail, to have the owners stop by to say hello to the customers, but it demonstrates the level attention and appreciation that they pay to their community. I've seen this reflected in their online social media networks which is lovely to see, shops supporting other shops and customers, but to see it happen live and in person was even better. I was pining to get a tattoo from the Black Veil and not only did it live up to my expectations, it was a heartwarming experience. The staff is exceptional, the craftsmanship is superb, the atmosphere is stunning and they have cultivated such a community that even their customers are kind and caring. Black Veil, within one session with them, has become my go-to tattoo biz for myself. I received their name from my friend/a current client of theirs, and he had nothing but great things to say about the team and their work (and the proof was in his beautiful tattoos). With that reference alone, I booked my appointment. Keep in mind - these guys are popular! I scheduled my appointment for July in December. You can't be disappointed by that because it only bodes well on so many levels. The patience was well-worth it. I loved their gothic aesthetic (check out their Instagram), and their shop has that same feel. It's as if you're walking into a Tim Burton movie when you enter Black Veil - from the decor to the tattoo rooms to the locale. Working with and meeting Lex was incredible. She has a spirit which makes you feel so welcome, even when you show up 45 minutes late because you went to the wrong location. #oops My appointment was with Matt, and he was just as amazing - personally and artistically. He completely understood the vision I had for my tattoos and was able to say and describe what I couldn't, and he had great suggestions of which I wouldn't have thought. The appointment lasted for three hours, over a half hour of that being spent on placement - no joke. Matt was incredibly patient and thorough. He wasn't their to tattoo an assembly line of people; he was there to create art. After three hours of conversation and comfortable silence, I was more than happy with the end result. The tattoos came out better than I could've ever expected, and I give that credit to the talent and the knowledge of the folks at Black Veil. This review is long over due.. I've gone to Matt twice now and have an upcoming appointment in October! (They're very popular!) Both times were an amazing experience! Matt is such a welcoming guy and spent 2 hours just piercing together my half sleeve. He even had to redo the placement of the stencil a few times, and I really appreciated how much time and thought he put into everything. Matt gave me more than I could've imagined! They also have a call list if they have any cancelations early, which is amazing. The shop is beautiful, clean, and almost mesmerizing .
