The setting of this store is mysteriously romantic but with a very dark tone. I loved the floral placement, the lighting, how everything is perfectly placed. The most beautiful piece in this store is that huge, ornate mirror in the back corner. A stunning piece that I'm sure is not for sale. But what a stunner that added so a romantic feel to the store. On the other side of that romantic tone is the dark side of it. The decor, the art, the books are very dark. It's a lot to take in but at the same time very intriguing. It's eerie but not eerie enough to scare you. Honestly, the perfect shop for your decor if your lifestyle craves that rich dark note to it. Staff was friendly. Store is beautiful. I didn't realize that there was a tattoo joint in the back. My daughter wanted a tat while we were in Salem so that would have been dope to get one here. The interior was so beautiful and scary, but in a classy way. There were unique book editions and artwork everywhere. I took home an Ozzy Osbourne post card that fit perfectly on my refrigerator. I actually didn't realize that they are also a tattoo studio - that would have been cool to check out, but I was so distracted and intrigued with the front of the store that I never even noticed. I went to 3 different tattoo shops to get an idea and a feel for their place before I decided on Merk Ink Tattoo Studio. I liked the vibe and feel of Merk Ink and I thought the woman at the front desk was very friendly and personable. It had been almost 21 years since my last tattoo so I was a bit nervous at first. She introduced me to Ireland who was very professional and made the entire session smooth and comfortable from start to finish. I decided on a small pumpkin with no color just above my wrist. The whole session took maybe an hour or so and I was obsessed with the tattoo once he was done - it was exactly what I wanted. It has been a week now and I can still say that I love my tattoo as it is healing and I am so happy that I chose Merk Ink! I will definitely be back to see Ireland the next time I visit Salem! She has the most beautiful handwriting, so we decided to use her script saying "Love You More" for matching family tattoos. Peter (@Petermon.tattoo) was absolutely amazing. He coordinated and accommodated 8 family members in one day -- some getting simple script tattoos while helping others create custom designs incorporating Yai Yai's handwriting. The best part was when Yai Yai unexpectedly stopped by and decided she wanted a tattoo too! Peter happily tattooed her, making her his oldest customer ever. He was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming to everyone, and he made Yai Yai feel so special. He was also very rude to my friend who got her tattoo at the same time. He made a comment about other tattoos she has, one of which is a quote, and said that "tattoos should be looked at, not read" which is uncalled for especially coming from a "tattoo artist" The final nail in the coffin is how busted my tattoo ended up being. What I thought would be a simple tattoo ended up being the worst decision I have ever made. I have other tattoos and have never bruised from them, but this one was bruised for weeks and concerned myself and my friends to the point where I considered going to the hospital to get it looked at because it was just not healing. He was very heavy handed with the needle as well. I know tattoos hurt but it felt as if this man was trying to tattoo my bone. After the tattoo finally healed the lines ended up being super blown out and uneven, and I am embarrassed that I have this thing on me for the rest of my life. The guy at the front desk helped me align it and said it would fit well. I picked a woman's face framed by a rose. I wish they would have let me know that it was a poor placement before putting the stencil on. The first part went fine, but shortly after doing part of the initial outline he told me that it would hurt a lot more when he began the inside of my arm. I tried to get through it, but eventually we decided to ditch the rose and just keep the face. Even though I got half the tattoo, I paid the full price. It looks great (and his lines are incredible) but I only got half of what I paid for. If I been advised about the placement, I probably would have chosen a different spot. Overall, the art is great and the staff are accommodating, but you might not get the best advice and end up leaving with half a tattoo.

His professionalism is unsurpassed. I can't say enough about how happy I am with the tattoos I've gotten from James and working with him from design to touch-up has equally great. The new shop is comfortable with a nice big couch in the waiting area, lots of cool art and interesting antique things. The tattooing area is spacious and you can tell the equipment is all top notch. James is painstaking about his work and it shows in his work area too. Seriously, I have no reason to get tattooed at any other shop.
