I came to get my medications renewed and my pharmacy sent them to be ordered from the office. When I returned to the pharmacy they said they never got a reply. I would call the Dr.s office and it would go to voicemail and I would never hear back. I called quite a few times. I figured they closed or moved. I felt very betrayed at the time. I had to see someone else and then they moved. I recently went on Yelp to find a new doctor and saw that Dr. Chikkala was still at the same place!?? WT? I left another message, again, no response! I drove over there today and only the nurse was there. I told her about all this and said she would have someone get back to me. So Dr. Chikkala's husband (who runs the front) Just now called me. He was very rude to me. He said that because it had been almost 2 years that she was no longer my doctor, (well of course she wasn't). I wanted to go back to see her. He wanted to go round and round about when he "said" he called me back a long time ago and it was ME that never responded. LOL really? I DID call, MANY MANY Times! No one ever got back to me. Very irresponsible for a doctor's office. So, I said I would like to get in to see her. Then he tells me that I have to find another doctor because she won't have any information from the last 2 years?? Well, they can get that information from the last group I was at. He proceeded to then just make up stuff and it got ridiculous. He made no sense, I realized he was just being an ass. I really do not wish to deal with people like that so I will find a new, better, more communicative, and responsive doctor's office.

I was scheduled for mid April and the scheduler took down all my contact and insurance information. Well, a few days before my visit I called the office to confirm my appointment and the staff member tells me your appointment is scheduled for April 2023. Who schedules their annual physical a year in advance? When I told the staff the scheduler obviously made a mistake they were able to fit me in for the following week due to a cancellation. Of course, I decided to confirm my appointment a day in advance, especially after my last incident, at which point the staff mentions that Dr Howerton is out of town and that I would be seen by the nurse practitioner instead. I was relieved that despite yet another oversight by this medical office that my health care needs were finally addressed. Fast forward to today, I had a virtual visit scheduled at 7:45 AM with Dr Howerton due to some recent health concerns. The online reminder email told me to sign in 15 minutes prior so I did as suggested. Promptly at 7:45 AM I logged into the tele-health call and waited until 8:00 AM and Dr. Lena Howerton was a no-show. Obviously this institution and its staff has no regard for their patients' time or well-being for that matter.

You can't call the office and talk to anyone, you have to message through a portal and hope you put some trigger words in the message to get any kind of response. However, I believe my concern goes far beyond the policy itself. It is about fairness, empathy, and the overall patient experience. Patients are routinely expected to be understanding when physicians run behind schedule. On several occasions at this office, I have checked in on time only to wait anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours before being seen. Patients accept those delays because we recognize that emergencies happen and physicians sometimes fall behind. Why doesn't that same understanding extend to patients? On the morning of my appointment, I left home well in advance. I encountered severe thunderstorms, road closures, traffic diversions, and multiple accidents. After arriving at your parking lot, I spent more than 10 minutes driving around simply trying to find an available parking space. Had adequate parking been available, I would almost certainly have checked in within your stated grace period. Does the practice take situations such as severe weather, inadequate parking, and circumstances beyond a patient's control into consideration before cancelling an appointment that took six months to obtain? My greatest disappointment was not that I was asked to reschedule. It was the attitude of the front desk employee. There was no empathy, no willingness to listen, and no attempt to contact Dr. Zikusoka's clinical staff to determine whether I could still be accommodated. On previous visits, I have personally witnessed staff make those calls for other patients. Healthcare should be patient-centered from the moment a patient walks through the front door. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. I continue to have the highest regard for Dr. Michelle Zikusoka. She is an outstanding cardiologist whose professionalism, compassion, and dedication are beyond question. My criticism remains directed solely at the front office staff and the way this situation was handled. I sincerely hope Austin Heart will consider applying the same patience, flexibility, and understanding to its patients that patients are expected to extend when the practice is running behind schedule.

I was told PoTS is rare. *PoTS is not rare. Finding a doctor who will test and diagnose properly is. Dr Z and I worked on diet and lifestyle changes and eventually began medication. I am in my 40s now: I went from barely being able to stand long enough to make it thru two 6hr shifts a week, to randomly becoming an adult gymnast who actually leaps and spins on the balance beam.
