When my car started acting funny I took it to a local shop for a look-see, they didn't find anything and told me I was "being paranoid". Through additional research, I found that my clutch was going out and began calling shops to prepare for the inevitable. Many shops would not work on my car because Ford makes things more difficult than necessary. Wise was fantastic! When I called and explained the problem Mr. Wise took the time to listen, and explained how the components worked, what I could expect as far as down time and costs. I held onto his number knowing that this is the place I would come once my clutch finally went out. A couple of weeks later, as I dropped my daughter off at school, it happened. I called Wise, and he was able to get my car in the same day. It only took 2 days to fix, and I was back on the road! As a single mother, and college student, being on a limited budget and having a very limited support network here in Berkeley, this could have been a horrible tragedy. But thankfully, I had found Wise! This was the cleanest, most professional shop I have ever been to. My father was a 'grease-monkey' as he called himself, so I know a little bit about cars, and spent many hours alongside my father passing him wrenches retrieved from grime-caked disorganized tool chests. This shop was practically immaculate, at first I thought I had wandered into a show room and not an automotive repair shop! I was treated respectfully, priced fairly, and received excellent service: no grimy steering wheel or muddy boot prints on the carpet! I now recommend Wise to everyone at Cal, and anyone that mentions a need for a mechanic. These guys were awesome, and I will not take my vehicle anywhere else! read more

I bought a used car, my dream car, and it had a few problems right after purchasing it. I brought my car to Wise after several of my coworkers raved about their service and quality of work. I wasn't disappointed. I was given a very fair estimate for the work being done. They were quick with the repairs and when I rode my bike down to pick up my car the owner loaded my bike into the car for me. I've never had to wait when I've come in. I do, however, welcome the opportunity. The waiting area is clean, looks comfortable, and is reminiscent of a 50's diner... but with flat screen TVs. ;) Thank You Wise!! UPDATE 12/31/2013: I have to update my review - Wais reconnected with me shortly after I wrote my review to tell me that they had moved, and apologized for not contacting me sooner. It just so happened that I needed my car serviced, so I took my car to his shop (which is even *closer* to my office than the old location!), and I have to say that the service I had grown accustomed to --- and grown to love --- was still there; just in a new location. I have a new car now, so I'll be going to the dealership for service until the warranty expires, but once that's done, I'm going back to Wais. He's a treasure. read more

INCOMPETENT is one word that describes wise and his mechanics. I brought my 92 gmc in for a engine rebuild. It took about a 6 weeks and when i went to pick it up it was misfiring bad. I refused to accept it. He worked on it more and said come pick it up. I went to get it and i was advised i now have a transmission problem. It did not have transmission issues when i dropped it off. $3.200 to repair it. We had a huge argument and this I called the cops and AAA. When i went to pay the $4.800 for my crappy running new engine i had the cops there and he changed the warranty terms from 24 month 24.000 miles to 12 -12.0000 I contacted AAA and they made him honor the 24/24. Since then the engine failed smog. He had to do more work. I personally had to replace the thermostat, temp sensor, fan clutch and throttle body because he refused to fix his crappy work. $TAY AWAY FROM THI$ $HOP read more

Wise Auto Tech did a superior job at repairing my Car. I had called before hand on Tuesday, and when I went there on Wednesday, he knew exactly who I was and what I was there for. So it only took me 5 minutes to drop my car off. When he was finished, he called me to tell me what he found and items that are/will be problematic and what I wanted to do about them. After that, he preformed what I asked, and when I picked up my car, the bill was exactly what I was told it would be and no extra charges added. Overall, excellent service work and I appreciated Owner's thorough explanations of the problem and what was needed to fix it. My car is beyond my mode of transportation; it's my baby. Experienced a full shutdown on the freeway and had no idea what it was. After towing it to the dealership who wanted to charge me $2300 to fix it (don't have that kind of cash), I got it running well enough to get it home and putted over to Wise Auto Tech. My 2000 Honda Accord EX, having done approx 118,000 miles, began malfunctioning. In October 2018, I went to "Engine World" at 1487 67th St.in Emeryville where I purchased a 2nd-hand transmission from them for $759.29 and, upon their recommendation, took my car to Wise Auto Tech to arrange for installation of the purchased transmission. Mr. Wais, the owner, quoted $745 to do the job. I agreed and it was arranged that Engine World would deliver the transmission directly to Wise Auto Tech. As a separate arrangement I requested Mr. Wais to take a look at the fan blower switch which randomly failed to operate, as well as the front passenger and both rear automatic door locks which were malfunctioning - specifically, only the driver's side door could be operated by both remote control and key, whereas all the other doors would not respond remotely and could be operated only physically. Wais agreed to take a look, explaining that the actuators had probably worn out, and he assured us he would get the problems fixed. He gave us to understand these were routine problems and he would need a couple of days to get the entire job done. He did not express any doubt that the job might not be simply and easily fixed. He told us he would call when the car was ready. In the next couple of days, I received a call from Mr Wais, giving me an estimate of how much it would cost to get both the fan blower unit and the automatic door lock problem fixed. These were the two jobs, over and above the original job of installing the transmission unit, I had asked him to fix. He said both these jobs would cost an additional $533.34, over and above the cost for installing the transmission, making a grand total of $1,299.97. This included both parts and labor. After receiving assurances from him that he would get the job done, I agreed to his price over the phone. The next call I received from Wais, was on the following day, Friday. Since Wise closes at 5 PM and over the weekend, the next opportunity was the following Monday morning. Mr. Wais also informed me that he had been able to get the fan blower fixed but had been unable to do much with the automatic door malfunction other than the driver side door which was now working normally. He said the other three doors would require additional parts and labor. I corrected him and told him there had never been a problem with the driver side door in the first place, as such nothing had been done to rectify the door lock problem at all and he would need to modify his charges accordingly. He refused to do so claiming that he would have to charge for labor. In spite of my protest that he had not delivered on his promise to fix the problem of three malfunctioning doors, he insisted that he be paid for time and labor. He did not even offer the courtesy of a discount of any kind folr his inability to fix the other three doors. The following Monday morning I went to take delivery of the car. Before making payment I took the car for a test drive and discovered a couple of completely new problems. First the engine made a high-pitched whining sound when the gas pedal was used. The second problem was a malfunction of the starter motor which randomly failed to start. The first time this happened was at a Honda dealership where I had gone while test driving to get the car radio reset. Wais had explained, this often became necessary when a car battery is disconnected for an extended period of time, and the code for reset was only available from a Honda dealership. I took the car back to Wais and explained the two problems. He said he could do nothing about the whining sound as his job was only to install the transmission that had been delivered to him. Since the high-pitched sound did not seem to interfere with the driving, I let it go at that and concentrated on the more pressing problem of the starter motor which every now and then would refuse to start inspite of repeated attempts. As luck would have it, when Wais tried the engine twice it started both times, but after I got the car home and parked it, it refused again inspite of several attempts. Eventually AAA had to tow the car to The Smog Shop in San Francisco where a new starter motor was installed. The additional cost for this was $151.88 Given these circumstances, I believe Wise Auto Tech was dishonest and mislead me. Not only did they overcharge for incomplete work, the car was given back with new problems and in a shoddy state i.e. the driver's side floor mat was badly stained with multiple engine oil marks and the passenger side glove box had several black engine oil or grease marks as well. In addition, the floor was littered with plastic bits and pieces. My complaint: 1. Being overcharged for incomplete and shoddy work. 2. The car was returned by Wise Auto Tech with two completely new problems which required additional time and money to fix. Wise Auto Tech refused to take any responsibility for this. read more

Two of my friends told me that they had been buying cars from wise for the past 20 plus years and had always been happy with not only the cars but his servicing of the cars as well. i contacted wise and he found me an amazing subaru forester within 3 days and it got it ready for me w/i a week. i love my car and he has taken great care of it for the past 4 years. i have referred friends and family to him and they have been pleased as well. so wonderful to have a mechanic in my life who i can trust and who takes good care of me and mine. read more

My usual garage was booked up so I brought my minor fix (change a fan speed blower resistor) here since I was about to take a long road trip and didn't want to risk burning out the fan motor since I needed the defroster and it would only run at the highest setting. Wais charged me 2X what my usual garage quoted me when they diagnosed the problem. I believe the customary minimum labor charge is 1/2 hr, which would correspond to my usual garage's estimate. Wais insisted it would take an hour labor to change the resistor. What this meant in practice was that he sat in the office for 20 minutes while I waited (in the admittedly shiny and well appointed garage waiting area), then slipped into the shop and spent what looked like 5 minutes, if that, on the change. And then he squirmed a little while I looked pointedly at my watch while he wrote up the bill--still for 1 hour "labor"-- within 35 minutes of my coming in. At that point he said something about minimum labor charge is 1 hour. Cough. Not at my usual shop. Never coming back here. There's really nothing you can do to mess up a fan speed blower resistor change short of not plugging it in, and my regular mechanic diagnosed it before I came in, so I can't comment on Wais' skill. But he's not overly honest about "labor" charges. read more

Can I give them negative stars? I would give them 10 negative stars if I could. Do not use this shop!! There are much better machine shops in Berkeley, they do not stand behind their work nor would I ever trust them to do anything automotive related period. That being said, here is my story. A trustworthy shop rebuilt the engine on my Tacoma and had the cylinder heads sent out to Wise auto machine shop for a simple pressure check and lapping of the valves. First they send us back a cylinder head that isn't mine. How does that happen? Who's is this? who is running this place? So we give them one free pass. Then they send us back my cylinder head, we install it and guess what ? the work was not done properly and its leaking down. First they deny it and tell us that they can't help us. So we take the engine apart again and send the cylinder head out to a much more expensive machine shop. They verified what we suspected(faulty machining work) and repaired it so we could finally finish the job. Bottom line is that they will take your money and not stand behind their work. DO NOT TRUST THEM. Use San Pablo automotive machine shop or for the very precise/race build use nothing but the best- hasselgren racing and engineering. read more

I don't think I've ever been more impressed by a car mechanic in my life than I am with Wise. When my '98 subaru with 190k miles on it was diagnosed with a compromised head gasket, meaning the engine needed to be rebuilt, I asked my mechanic at another shop (one of Berkeley's top-rated) and was quoted a floor price above the blue book value of the car; they also warned it could go much higher. This came at a really tight time for me financially, so it hit me hard. I thought I'd have to replace the car. I happened to tell my neighbor about it, and he asked if I'd been to Wise. Wise, he pointed out, has its own machine shop, so lots of other shops in the area outsource engine rebuilds to Wise. Sounded worth checking out. Wais (the actual spelling of the proprietor's name) spoke with me personally when I walked in. He took my car and put it up on the lift, on the spot. He walked me through a guided tour of everything underneath, explaining what things were, and telling me what looked good (most things) and what looked iffy (a small seal). I've never had another mechanic do that. He helpfully reassured me there seemed to be no sign of transmission leakage. This was a huge contrast to the other shop, which simply said "there's no telling what else we'll find, so the price could go up a lot." He then quoted me a floor price roughly 1/3 less than the place I started at, a difference of more than $1,000.- I was still concerned that Wise had so few yelp reviews, and I asked him about that. He didn't have an explanation, but said he'd been in business there for at least 5(?) years (I forget the exact number). I was reassured also that my neighbor had recommended him, so I gave him the job. He turned it around in about a week. Midway through, he called me in again, just to look at my disassembled engine, post-cleaning but before he did more serious work, to show (not just tell) me what I had, and to present options. Again, I've never had another mechanic do that. He also showed me everything now visible under the hood of the car, now that the engine was out, with the transmission exposed, and again re-assured me there was no issue lurking there. I chose a couple of add-ons (new oxygen sensors for about $300, valve work for $600), and he also found that I needed a new timing belt tensioner, which added about another $100. In total, the job with add-ons came in at about the same price as the other mechanic's floor price -- but now I have peace of mind that my car will live a long time still, and is not likely to need major work again soon. And I have this based on some actual understanding, not just a few quick words from the other place, that would have gone over my head. The engine light came on once not long after the job. I was worried, but it turned out that just one of the new oxygen sensors was bad. Wise replaced it in less than a day, free of charge. read more

But, after shopping around, Wise offered a reasonable price for labor and had no problem with me supplying my own transmission to be installed. Other places wouldn't do this, and i ended up saving hundreds of dollars by going to Wise. Also, i practically pushed the car in off the street and he had no problem taking it in and fixing it the next day. friendly, helpful, professional, reasonable rates, and he even simply warned me that the brakes would need to be replaced soon, rather than pushing to make more money off me... happy! read more

The worst at what they do. They tried and failed to rectify the poor machine shop,which wise owns, rebuild of my Mazda. Once I got my car back after two times it still was miss firing and the check light came back on. Finally my mechanic who trusted Wise to build my motor had to pull the motor out yet again and fix the shoddy work by Wise. This shop and his machine shop are liars without any technical Abilities. Don't go here or you will loose money and time. Cheaters and liars are all you will find. read more

The reason the shop is so clean is because no one goes there. Mechanic's shops should be at least a little cluttered, shouldn't they? And the reason it's so nicely low-pressure is because they don't know what they're doing. We took our car in *several* times with recurring symptoms (going back to him because he was so friendly), and were told (in a friendly, low-pressure way) that there wasn't anything really wrong with it - but of course the symptoms persisted. We took it elsewhere, and they saw the problems right away and fixed them. So either he's a slimeball who was waiting until our problems got so bad that he could charge an arm and a leg to fix them, or he's an honest nice guy who doesn't know what he's doing. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's honest. Sure, he's friendly and gives free drinks - but I'd rather have a fixed car. read more

I came to Wise Auto Tech after Art's started turning their noses up at my cars and suggesting I should get new ones. I've had nothing but good experiences there with a lot of honesty about what needs to be done and what can wait. I've felt treated with respect even though my cars are old. Weiss hears me out and helps me achieve my goal (keep it running one more year) But this is the story that I would give them 10 stars for, my brother took his car there after it broke down. Weiss diagnosed the problem, quoted him a price and told him he really, really needed to fix his brakes as well. My brother said he couldn't pay for the brakes then, he'd do it next month, but he needed to get the car running so he could go to work. When he came to pick the car up, he had new brakes! He was distressed about having to pay for it and thought there had been a misunderstanding. When he talked to Weiss about it, he said "Your brakes weren't safe. I couldn't let you drive your car out of here like that. You'll pay me when you can." My brother had only taken his car there once before that. Have you ever heard of a mechanic that would do that? Of course my brother paid as soon as he could and no one in my family has ever taken their cars anywhere else since. read more

F U B A R..... I brought 2 disassembled Motor components to Wise Machine Shop for reconditioning work. The Engine Block was machined for oversize Pistons and the work was properly performed... The Valve Seats in the Cylinder Head were supposed to be reground to proper angle and concentricity and valve seating surface to be reground to proper specifications. My first surprise upon picking up the parts was the comment "my boss told me I did not charge enough"... and "Cash only". Ok, but it would be nice to post a sign or tell me in advance...also no call to revise the estimate to compensate for additional work or time. Picked up the items and paid for it.. my mistake. Discovered at home that the valve seats were reground non concentric and in a substandard way; no way to get the valves to seal properly. Returned to the shop with the cylinder head and pointed the flawed work out to the service person who performed the work according to his own statement. "there is nothing I can do about it, I would recommend you bring it to another machine shop" . Reason for flawed work... Lack of knowledge, skill level or improper tools used. Also great attitude towards quality control and customer service... Got the "buzz off" reply on subsequent phone call... Wound up buying 260 $ worth of tools to do the job myself and it took a significant amount of time to correct the initial screw up. As far as my professional qualifications go.. 32 years professional work as an Automotive Technician and Shop Foreman on BMW's; working on a BMW engine for my own car... Ironically started out working in engine assembly for BMW Motorsport Division in 1970; so some competence in the subject... No further comments..I don't think they are necessary.. Juergen read more

I have been taking my cars to Wise auto for about 6 years. I found him when I needed an engine and an auto shop in my area, Concord, quoted me a price , but then said Weis would do it for about $600 less and that he does them all the time, so I should consider taking it there. I figured if an auto shop was recommending him he must be good. I have been going back ever since and have never been disappointed. I've had timing belts, struts, starter motors, brakes,tune ups, as well as the engine rebuild and all the work has been excellent. Weis is one of the most honest and fair people I have ever met. He always goes the extra mile to fit me in if I have an emergency. Prices are generally below quotes I have gotten elsewhere and there are times he has given me a really good deal just because he is such a nice person. I feel Weis cares for his customers and I can trust him to be there when I need him. As for the person who was upset because he moved, all you have to do is call the phone number and find out the new address. That is what I did. I would recommend Wise Auto to anyone. My car broke down late at night and the tow-truck guy basically said "now is the time to get a new car, it's done for'. I was sooo happy that my car was taken to wisetech auto. Not only was it fixable, it was done literally the day afterwards! I was told that I'd need the steering rack replaced eventually and he did not push me to do it then, just said that my car was 'ok to drive now for several months'. GREAT! I agree with other users that the shop does look nice, however in the end is just like all other auto shops!! Found a car there for sale and went to take a look. It had some minor problems but they were quick to assure me that all would be fixed!!! I trusted him, payed for the car (big mistake!) and after a couple of days went to pick it up. After just two days, started finding small things that he didn't fix and others that I hadn't even noticed. Had to go back and leave the car at the shop 3 times and still they only fixed half the things they said they would. At a certain point I just couldn't take any more excuses: "the warranty does not cover that", "I don't have the specialized technician", blah, blah... Just one piece if advice: if you buy a car there just make sure everything is fixed BEFORE paying!! read more

Update: 01.21.2015 After only 23,000 miles the head gasket went completely bad again. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Should change their name to Unwise Auto Tech. I had my Toyota T100 engine rebuilt and clutch replaced by Wise Auto tech. After the rebuild I had a frayed timing belt, 4wd drive not working and the owner asking for $500 to fix a problem related to his work. Had to report them to the Bureau of Automotive Repairs for all the trouble they caused. When I got my truck back it was making a noise from the top of the motor. I contacted Wise and he said to bring it in so he could check it. This guy made me come to his shop to tell me that he didn't have time to check the problem and told me to come back so he could do a thorough check, he also said he would take off the timing belt cover to check as well because I said that is where the sound was coming from (100 mile round trip for me). I also asked wise to check why the 4wd was not working and he said that he doesn't work on transmissions. I brought my truck back the second time and within 10 minutes he told me that the fan bracket bearing was bad and it would cost $500 to repair. I said that I wasn't making noise before the rebuild and that I would have to think about it before paying another $500. I had another shop tell me $300 to replace the bracket so I had them do the work. They found the timing belt loose and frayed but nothing wrong with the fan bracket bearing. Called Wise and he said that he would not take my truck back because someone else worked on it. I had to have the second shop complete the $300 work before I could have the truck towed to Wise. Wise repaired the timing belt and blamed me that I had the wrong timing gear in my engine before the rebuild. (I was having the rebuild done due to a blown head gasket and no other issues) he also still insisted that the fan bracket was causing the noise when 1/4 of the timing belt was gone. I bought a shop manual and trouble shot the 4wd problem and found that it wasn't working due to a wire on the transmission housing wiring harness, probably pulled out of the connector when the clutch was being replaced. With all the hassle, time and money wasted on this shop, I had to write this review, It is the least I could do. read more

I have been going to Wise Auto for 15+ years, and 4 cars. Weis (the owner) himself is a great guy, and knows his stuff. He has done a great job over the years for me and my husband. I have now followed him to the new locaiton on 10th Street. In all those years (and cars) he rebuild and engine (for my husband), fixed breaks and transmissions, done regular maintenance, and simple oil changes. You name it, he has done it. He has even helped me buy my new vehicle (my 2009 Scion XB - love it!) In all that time, he has also done our family some favors, such as fixing simple things free of labor (just the parts), when I dropped by unannounced with part in hand. He is a classic small business guy, who you develop a realationship with and is your go-to guy. Reading the one star reviews - yeah, once one of his staff guys didn't get my car fixed correctly, but I brought it back and Weis got it fixed for no extra cost. (He has a few flakes over the years on staff, but they get terminated.) I plan on sticking with him as long as I am in Berkeley. read more
