Aaron Palaian and the rest of the Onurleft Sports crew really know how to hold a triathlon…read more Held in Kemah, Texas, the Gateway to the Bay Triathlon includes a Saturday sprint-distance triathlon (500m swim, 12.5 mile bike, 3 mile run) and a Sunday olympic-distance triathlon (1500m swim, 40K bike, 10K run). Not only does this triathlon offer a saltwater swim leg, when a lot of triathlons in Houston and Austin only offer freshwater swims, the Gateway to the Bay Triathlon offers top placers entry into the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Once you are registered for the event, Aaron will send you a weekly newsletter with important information and updates. Plus, for me, when I needed something changed with my registration info, he personally emailed me back, telling me he updated my info. Something that I really liked about this triathlon was that there was no race to grab a prime bike spot on the racks in the transition area. Spots were assigned on the racks according to your bib number. I wasn't lucky enough to have a spot at the end of a rack, but I was lucky enough to meet the 2 people right next to me, and we all made sure to accommodate each other. For the olympic-distance swim, the organizers chartered boats (the kinds you take a seated tour of the bay on) and dropped us off at the start buoys, 1500 meters from shore. This was my first olympic triathlon and my first saltwater tri swim. It would be an understatement to say that I was nervous. And it didn't help that the organizers kept saying that if it wasn't your day, stay on the boat. My mind echoed that in my head, "stay on the boat...stay on the boat...stay on the boat..." But, seeing the sun rise over the water, watching pelicans and seagulls fly around the boat, and feeling the wind on my face relaxed me. It was beautiful out there. Buoys were about ever 1/4 mile apart, leading the athletes to the exit ramp. Two more things that I liked about this triathlon were the wetsuit strippers and the carpeted trail leading from the swim's exit ramp to the transition area (the carpet was nice on my feet). My wetsuit stripper took less than 10 seconds for something that would have taken me at least a minute. It was funny--my dad happened to be right behind the wetsuit stripper as the stripper was yanking off my wetsuit, and my dad got smacked in the face with my suit. The bike leg was mostly flat save for the up-and-down over the Kemah Bridge (146). It was steeper than I thought it was. The rest of the bike course was flat. And the organizers of the triathlon were able to get plenty of the local law enforcement to hold and direct traffic. The race officials warned us that there would be only one set of portapotties on the bike leg. Luckily, I didn't have to use it, but I could see how some others might have wanted a few more out there. By the time I got to the run, it was hot (I'm not the fastest triathlete!). There were plenty of aid stations along the route serving gels (I tried an apple cinnamon gel...it was gross), gatorade, heel (another kind of energy drink), and water. And there were a few more portapotties along the route...but, being a dude, the portapotty situation isn't as crucial, if you know what I mean. When I got to the finish line, I was given a medal, a wet, commemorative towel, a water bottle, and a finisher's shirt (along with the participant shirt). That's a whole lot of schwag for a small triathlon! Plus, there was a lot of food (pizza, bananas, pretzels, My Fit Foods was out there giving out food) and drinks (beer, water, gatorade). And there was a live band playing, too. Parking was great. The organizers secured the Kemah Boardwalk parking lots and the use of the Boardwalk garage. My parents, who came out later in the day, were still able to find parking. The only two things that I would have love happened (and, hopefully, can happen next year) are: the olympic run route going around the Kemah Boardwalk, which is something Kemah is known for. I like running around sites the host city is known for. I believe the sprinters got to run around the Boardwalk. The other thing is...well, it's kind of silly, but I like to drink chocolate milk at the end of a long race. So, if anyone from Onurleft Sports is reading this, can you get some chocolate milk for me at the finish? And thanks to all the volunteers, law enforcement, and organizers, who made this a great day for me.

I signed up for the olympic/international distance since it was the first triathlon of the season…read morein the region. Packet Pick up was at Northwest Cycling Center and they provided everyone with a cardboard box that contained bibs, numbers, a tech shirt and a participant's guide. Prerace. I woke up around 4am and got to kemah around 520am parked around 530 and arrived at transition around 545 with only 15 minutes to set up my transition before it closed around 6am. I had to race to get all my stuff to the transition area, find my spot, set up my gear in record time, run barefoot to the boat area and the race hasn't started yet. We all boarded the boat and sat on the floor waiting for it to take us to our destination. I'm on a boat, mother****er! Or at least I was until we were transported to the dropoff point and each triathlete crossed the electronic start line and jumped into the water to swim to shore in a deceptive straight line. I'm not a big fan of swimming as I felt that there were a lot of waves and a current pushing me off course and disorienting me at times so I would have to frequently sight the buoys. That and I feel like I'm drowning in the water when I swim. I remember hearing lots of people dry heaving and I was thinking that it was glad that I didn't eat any of the donuts on board the ship. The buoy were large and easily visible. There were wetsuit strippers to help me get my suit off me so I could run to the transition area on the carpet path. The bike portion was flat, smooth and didn't go over the kemah bridge. There were about two turnarounds that we had to slow down at. The headwind coming from the north was brutal but at least it turned into a tailwind that helped me go around 27mph with a high cadence as I headed back south. The run portion consisted running around a neighborhood, around the kemah boardwalk and up/down the kemah bridge twice. They had some accelerate electrolyte drink that I took a sip of and spit out. I have to buy one of those race belts that lets you carry personal fluid to avoid situations like this. I just had water at every station from that point on. The start of the run was tough since I haven't done any brick training and was focusing on just not stopping. I actually got stronger toward the later part of the run as many were fading away. Post race. They give you a medal, bottle water and various honey milk once you cross the finish line. The post race food included chicken rice bowel from my fit foods, bananas, granola bars, cookies, pizza and soda. There were tables to eat your food but the chairs were all being hoarded by different groups of people.

Before heading in, be prepared to lock up your phones in the provided lockers. What happens in those rooms stays in those rooms! Our group did the Titanic room, and the adventure did not disappoint. Every little detail matters, seriously, the smallest clues make the biggest difference. And anytime we hit a wall, hints were available to keep us moving without spoiling the fun. Im happy to report we made it onto the lifeboat with our life jackets on . Azi was a fantastic host, friendly, clear with the rules, and congratulated us when we escaped. All around, an amazing experience. I'd absolutely return for another adventure!

We were directed toward a boat and told to walk over, he elected to drive over in his truck. No kidding. We got on board and were instantly bossed around and given duties, the boat was older and smelled of mildew and old water down below. We were told that tips were customary but not mandatory as we cruised out?! ok. I would let my customer service skills award me tips, not reminding everyone. Let me sum this up, if you want to sail around on the water and enjoy the gulf and be put to work but a semi crass man, then sign up. If you want a refreshing, relaxing cruise with great customer service that makes the 40 min trip from Houston worth every min, then go some where else. Bought a groupon for a 3 hour guided kayak tour through Armand Bayou. First disclaimer: the bayou…read moreis surprisingly gorgeous, wild and will immediately transport you to the Amazon. But I'm not reviewing the bayou, I'm reviewing the business as you can always come to the bayou with a different outfitter or on your own (though it would be hard to find the cool, narrow routes we took via the tour on your own). First off, the business is not well marked - it wasn't clear which building they were in and where their parking was; this could be easily improved with better signage. Second, the checking in process which includes signing waivers, getting your life vest and oars, and paying an additional fee was much more chaotic than it needed to be. They seemed to only have one clipboard despite 12 people in the group each needing to sign a waiver. They also tagged on an additional fee which you had to pay in CASH - neither the fee nor the cash only part were mentioned in the groupon fine print. Who is going to carry around a wad of cash when they are getting in a kayak and leaving their car in a parking lot for 3 hours? They could have easily communicated this beforehand and saved us the hassle of driving out to find an atm which then charges a fee since the nearest one is unlikely your own bank's branch. The guide gave us an odd intro in the parking lot after the very long check in process. He seemed to be trying to scare people: "So, who here has a problem with alligators?" How are you supposed to answer that? I felt bad for individuals from other countries who were clearly confused and maybe didn't know that alligators are pretty normal here and don't bother you. He then spent 10 minutes figuring out the order of our car procession as you each take your own vehicle on a 10 minute drive to the Armand Bayou parking area (they could have easily avoided this by giving us address/directions beforehand) and we were each to memorize the make and color of the vehicle in front of and behind us and remember a series of verbalized "first left" and "third right" etc. Again, unnecessarily chaotic. Once you're finally all in the water, it feels great. You start out in the open and then get into narrow channels with dense brush and the guide does a great job of pointing out wildlife - mostly birds and several alligators. I truly felt like I was in South American jungle instead of Houston for those few hours. The guide gives a few much needed breaks (I'm in decent shape running/biking/weight training at least 5 days a week and still found the breaks helpful as kayaking works particular muscle groups in your arms/back and can make your lower back and bum pretty sore). It's an out and back route and the nice thing is that once you get back to the Armand Bayou parking lot, you can head home from there. I would definitely come back to Armand Bayou, but I would try a different company or probably just rent a kayak next time and explore on my own.

I went for a 15 lap package on a cold (46 F) overcast day. The check in at the front was efficient…read moreand friendly, even though I am sure the employees were freezing. I watched a group of cars for about 15 minutes before my class, from the stands, the cars looked slow. Then I saw the pro-drivers taking people on a ride along. They went fast. Most of the public was driving slow and probably scared to go fast. I attended the class and then waited my turn. The full time staff is great, but the kids they hire for a couple of days are poorly trained and not knowledgeable at all. On my ride along, I had to switch cars because the belts were too tight on the one they put me in and my helmet was hitting the top of the car. I am not that big. 5"10" about 200. The driver was great and gave me lots of instruction. It was well worth it and he showed me just what the car (and he) could do. When they put me in my car to drive, I knew right away it was too tight. The seats are welded to the floor. No adjusting. The steering wheel was in my chest, literally and my head hit the roof. The kid who was trying to buckle me in (and didn't know that job well either, I had to help him untwist the belts) told me it was ok. I said no it isn't and just started unbuckling and getting out. The manager came over and agreed it was too tight and put me in another car. I asked the same kid at least 10 times if he had inserted a SD card for the video. In a minute sir, I'll go get it, etc. Finally the spotter in the stands radioed me and told me to go. I went. I took one lap at a reasonable speed and then drove the way the pro driver showed me. It was fast, the tires even on a cold day stuck in the corners and I went hard our of the corners and down the straight, braked hard then smooth acceleration around the corners. The spotters had me pass 5 times other drivers so I must have been going good, or at least better than those on the track with me. I had the track to myself for 5 laps and went faster. It was a blast. I will do it again at a bigger track. This is a 3/8 mile and you only get up to about 85 - 90 MPH on the straights. When I got done the same kid came to get me out and then I said make sure you get the video card and guess what, no camera is even in that car. That was a mistake by the manager and the kid. No one checked even after repeated requests on my part. When I got out of the car I went to the manager and he apologized and told me I could have a refund or get a photo plaque of me sitting on the car with my helmet and a cap or t shirt. My choice. I said what about another drive with the video. He said he could arrange that at another date as they were booked out for this run in Houston. I took the photo plaque and a cap, like I need another cap. All in all it was a good time, but more training is needed on the temp help. These kids no almost nothing and putting me in a car that did't fit is downright dangerous. I am glad I took control of my own situation but I still got burned on the video. When I go again it will be at a super speedway like Talladega where I was told you go about 150 MPH. If you have your won full face helmet bring it. I should have brought mine. Fits better and a thousand others have not used it. The visibility is not the best in the helmet I wore.

I have now been twice to this experience at the Houston Motorsports Park. I find it absolutely…read morethrilling especially with the great discounts you can get through Groupon and Living Social. One thing I have found is that some people misunderstand what this is at this location. This is an experience to see what it is like to be on a race track, driving in a real race car, and with other cars on the track where passing is encouraged. The key here is that most people don't know what it is like to drive a race car and especially how to drive around a short circle track. Because of this alone I have seen that most people have an unrealistic expectation of what the experience is. This is not about how fast you are going to go. Daytona and Talledega are 2.5 mile tri-oval Super Speedways where the PROFESSIONAL NASCAR drivers are driving at speeds of 180+mph. Bristol Motor Speedway is a .533 mile oval track with heavy banks where PROFESSIONAL NASCAR drivers are driving at speeds 120+mph. The Houston Motorsports Park is a .38 mile circle track. You are not going to go 180mph much less 120mph on a .38 circle track. This is not about how fast you are going to go. In my opinion in order for you to get the best experience you must buy the Ride A Long with a Driving Experience. This is for two reasons. The first is so that you can get a feel and understanding for what it is like to drive around this particular track with someone that knows what they are doing. Without this understanding you are completely short changing yourself in the Driving Experience. The second is because this is going to be your chance to go the fastest around the track. If you don't do the Ride A Long and you only do the Driving Experience you are going to be spending half or more of your time trying to get comfortable inside this powerful vehicle that you have never driven before in an environment you have never been in before. Spend some time on youtube and watch other peoples experiences. They are great to set the expectations. If you are fan of racing in any way shape or form I think this will be an experience you will never forget. Just go into it with the right mindset. I enjoy it so much that I will probably make it a yearly tradition.
