First I want to say that I'm aware there are negative reviews about this company, but that seems to be mostly in regards to their lawn service which I have never used. As a frequent shopper at their nursery through the years I give them a thumbs up. The nursery itself is quite large and their selection is great. A lot of their items are seasonal and sell quickly so go as early as the season allows for some stuff. For me though I love the evergreen shrubs and they have every type and every size available. I have always had a positive experience with their staff at the store itself. I also had great service from their delivery staff when I made a big purchase of mature shrubs. They were carried to exactly where I wanted them in my backyard which I appreciated because my yard is quite hilly and some parts are steep. I also hired a landscape designer to come out and give me advice about various shrubs and flowers i could plant that would work well in my plant beds and with what is already there. The advice was pretty basic, but he took his time and the service fee was $99. Landscapers are never cheap so I didn't think that was a bad price for some expert feedback. One star off is for pricing in general. Items they sell are expensive. But I just love how you can get almost anything you want there and at various growth stages including quite mature items that take years to grow. I requested full service and an estimate by phone and info on line. Then spoke to a receptionist twice and was assured someone would call soon. This was three weeks ago.. Nothing. No response. I was skeptical. Bought a house in Avon and sort of inherited Winterberry as the lawn service provider. Candidly, expensive and as noted I was skeptical. I thought I might fire them to save money. Cost was so high I assumed it was some scam or rip off. Decided to keep them on for the Fall. Just a trial. See how it went. They have been amazing. A level of lawn service I have never seen. They basically vacuum clean the three acre yard every week. They clean out the beds. Cut back the shrubs. No botanical garden or arboretum in the world looks better. I now understand the admittedly high cost. Fall clean up has no real meaning. Every week is Fall clean up. When they leave, it looks better than Disney world. In fact, Orlando is a B+ compared to this. You could hold a wedding here outside any time with no extra planning, just show up. I have had services before which mowed, blew off the driveway and left. OK but ordinary. This is like something from Japan, or the royal gardens. An entirely different level of service and attention. There is a house down the street. I thought it always looked fabulous. I just noticed the truck outside, guess who, Winterberry. So others may have similar experiences. So my budget is basically out the window, but the grounds look like Augusta National on a good day. read more

RUINED MY LAWN! Probably one of the most expensive lawn care services in CT, so the expectation is they will be better than the others. Far from that! Also, their sales pitch really degrades the services of others to position themselves as the experts; all talk, cannot deliver! I would not recommend anyone to use Winterberry Gardens. I signed up for the season for $1,200.00; a significant premium over the others; however, with great expectations. After their second application my lawn started to brown, this is in early June when grass in CT is green even if you do nothing. Obviously, they burned the roots. They came back with a third application then killed everything that was previously green. Despite numerous complaints and the obvious brown lawn; Winterberry was in denial that they burned my lawn. After I pressed hard that they needed to fix my lawn or reimburse me for the full season ($1,200.00), they did eventually reimburse me for the 2 applications they did not apply (no grass, they killed all of it) and made a lame try to fix the lawn with a substandard mix of grass seeds. See pics below for the ruined lawn. There are a few characters from Winterberry you do not want within a mile of your lawn. 1) Michael Brancaccio - supposedly a "lawn expert"; I did not see any credentials to support that claim. All will be fine as long as there are no complaints. After I complained that my lawn was browning, not greening, Michael was aggravated that I was not appreciative enough of all the work he was doing and threatened about 'the relationship' - its all about delivery & results Michael! I have most of the less-than-friendly text messages, happy to share with anyone. 2) David Fusco - a talking head that showed up as part of the escalation process as a PR person. Delivery still sub-standard. Conclusion: After spending $1,200.00 at Winterberry; I had a brown lawn. The following year I spent ~$480.00 at Home Depot on Scotts products and did it myself and was able to restore my lawn to almost where it was before Winterberry ruined it. I have also received several estimates from other lawn services for around $600.00 - $850.00 to do my lawn; significantly less. I'm certain these services could not do a worst job than Winterberry did. read more

I have used winterberry for irrigation and landscaping . They let my lawn burn in the beginning of summer despite over 15 phone calls , 8 no show appointments and countless emails. The next season ,I gave them another chance because they assured me that this time would be different. The same thing happened. No one to turn on irrigation . I pay an annual service contract.Again, the lawn is burnt. Do Not use them -they are so poorly run . read more

Contract and communication line items extremely vague. Designer Cheryl, gave so many excuses especially pertaining to her own personnel life and other jobs they had in the works. I was charged by my credit card for work that had not been completed! Promised they would come back out to resolve issues, but was told I was to be the designer and foreman. I spent so much time lining this job up 7 months ago with no outcome. I have asked for a refund of incomplete work.....still waiting. I would give Winterberry a -10 Star Rating. read more

If you are looking for great selection of plants with some unusual varieties and an amazing atmosphere and you love to garden, I'd recommend Winterberry. It's like shopping in a botanical garden. This review pertains to their irrigation department. I do not have any experience with their landscaping or gardening services. For irrigation they are the absolute worst-run company I can imagine. Every time my wife and I schedule a system start-up/winterization with a Jason Dudgeon who does not seem to understand the concept of an appointment. Invariably, and I mean every time, the technician is not at my house anywhere near the time slot and we get a snarky email about 2 hours later asking why we are not present (we are at work). Obviously we mentioned that fact during scheduling and we always wait at least 30-45 minutes and not once have they arrived in that window. The same thing goes with regards to winterization, the communication is flat out terrible. We were told to turn off the water and timer so that the flush could be performed while we were at work, and did so properly. Then we get another snarky email asking why the water is not off and I leave work to take care of the issue only to find out that we did in fact shut off everything properly and once again they wasted our time. I could use any number of choice descriptors for their service but will refrain from doing so but believe me when I say this is 100% accurate and unfortunately their modus operandi. We were locked into their services due to our builder (which is another story) but will obviously never use this company again. If you do not work, then perhaps you could use their services but if you have a day job you would be best-served looking elsewhere for sure. read more

I have used all of winterberry gardens services over the past six years. To start with, their landscape design department is fabulous. They transformed My space to an entertainers paradise,. I have a complete outdoor living space and now spend more to outside then in. The designers stay involved in the project from start to completion to make sure the project comes together seamlessly. Besides having my pool, patio, & outdoor kitchen done by winterberry. I also used them to put a complete irrigation system in. I visit their garden center several times in a season and always find something unique and interesting. Everyone is the garden & offices are friendly and helpful. I would not use another company for mi outdoor needs and often recommend others to call winterberry gardens first. read more

To start I have no green thumb.( I have unsuccessfully grown Chia pets , to my shame). My wife on the other hand does and likes to fill our back deck with all sorts of flowers and herbs. For the past 2 years we've gotten flowers and for 2 years we've been extremely happy with the results. It's wonderful to cook with your own grown spices and this past summer that's all I did.We grew a beautiful garden which made my wife extremely happy. The staff is very helpful and knowledgable about plant life. They helped us pick the best flowers for the space and lighting that our garden provided. read more

Nightmare. Paid for a site survey and large landscape job including a wall and walkway. Not even two years in and a large hole appears at the bottom of our walkway. Winterberry has not returned our call. Will try them again but would not recommend right now. read more

Winterberry did some landscaping at my neighbors house 2 summers ago. My wife was home when one of their employees came to the front door and asked if they would be able to use our driveway and drive across our lawn in order to dump mulch down a steep bank. My wife politely agreed as the employees promised he would fix any damage that occurred during their work. It was an extremely hot summer day and our newly paved driveway had not settled as it was brand new. When driving their truck up our driveway they turned the wheels several times without moving which gouged the driveway in 5 different spots and leaving it crumbling. My wife saw the marks and approached the employees working. One of the men was extremely rude and nasty cursing at her and being completely disrespectful. The man who initially came to our door to ask eventually returned and was very kind promising to fix everything plus putting in an irrigation system. We were extremely irritated but appreciated the generosity of what seemed to be one of the managers. He left his card with us and told us to contact him about it. We contacted him later that day after the emotions had settled from having our brand new $13,000 driveway torn up by an ignorant driver. We asked that he backfill our driveway with loam and seed rather than doing anything as extreme as an irrigation system or even fixing the driveway. He agreed to do this for us and told us he would get it done within 2 weeks. 2 weeks passed and no one came. A month passed and still no one had come. We contacted the manager again and asked when we was coming. He again promised he would get it done but made us seem as if we were an irritation when his business tarnished our brand new driveway. Finally one afternoon this man showed up and back filled a 5 foot segment of my 200+ foot driveway. Disgusted at their lack of care and fake kindness we decided to be done with the headache they had caused us and deal with our scuffed up driveway. For anyone that has ever paid for a driveway to be paved you can sympathize with my situation. While my wife did agree to allow them use of the driveway to make their job easier, they still failed to hold up their end of the bargain in fixing the damages they caused. I am currently looking for a landscaper to do some work in my own yard this spring and when searching for someone to use I came across Winterberry and felt I needed to share our interaction with this despicable business. I would never use this company for anything at all! Especially seeing that landscapers are a dime a dozen. From the fake promises to the rude employees who cursed at my upset wife to the fact that they would take advantage of someone who was simply being kind to them as they were working on a difficult lot I would never encourage anyone to use this business ever!
