Now, my Tom and I both share the same opinion about chain restaurants, which thankfully lands us in…read moresome amazing places! We'd started our annual trip to frankfurt market and pub crawl, which has become an old schoolmate traditional, and a few drinks in, and still fairly early in the day, we decided that it was probably wise that we actually ate. Hello yelp app, and a fancy for Japanese. After spending a rounds worth of deliberating if we could go to somewhere with such a name, we caved with the great reviews. We were brought in, past the low kneeling tables and water features to the bar around the little kitchen, a slight spot in the beautiful decor were the sports direct mugs on a shelf which made us chuckle a little. I plumped for jasmine tea whilst perusing the substantial menu, Tom, shocked that I was breaking the alcohol chain, did the same. The menu was pretty detailed and it took a bit of flicking back and forth to choose, but all the contents were listed well enough. We went for one of the cheaper platters, the soft shell crab, and the california rolls, and after the beef was unfortunately unavailable, we went for something else too, but I can't remember which! We were happy, so very happy, we saw everything prepared before our eyes with rapid skill, whilst our miso soup headed to us on the model train that loops around it. We crammed our plates in the small place between us, and got to work, chopsticks in hand and with plenty of wasabi and picked ginger, on the lovely little place settings they have. The soft shell crab was probably our favourite, so much so that he text we from work in denmark recently in the middle of the night saying he had cravings for soft shell crab sushi and gin! I've been here since to introduce my mum to sushi when I was visiting, and the service and food was just as good (even if my Mum decided sushi wasn't her thing! Haha!) It is pricy though, so something for a treat!

Excellent quality sushi in a serene atmosphere. The one silly thing is the train which can bring or…read moretake away small dishes. They had it going around a few times for no reason which got a little tiring. Spicy miso soup was delicious! Full of tofu and veggies it had a lot of flavor. The spider roll was big and tasty. Marinated bamboo shoots were a nice touch. The mixed sushi platter with a long name I can't recall was great. This was enough to share between two people. Hamachi, salmon and eel were of excellent quality. Tuna was average. Rolls were good. Overall a nice place for a date and worth the slightly higher prices. Clean and safely set for eating during these times.

The house special dragon roll was my favorite, prawn tempura wrapped with eel and tobiko in a nice bbq mayo sauce. The Ten Ichi ramen is the way to go to have it all. Prawn tempura, tasty fried chicken, mushrooms, wakame, naruto and tofu. Only thing missing was the half egg. Noodles were too soft soaking up the tonkatsu broth. The pork katsu ramen was average, egg breaded pork was not as crispy as the fried chicken. Side of vegetable tempura was a nice assortment of delicious veggies. Overall it was a pleasant experience in a comfortable setting. Great date spot with something for everyone.

As it's the opening day, they only had limited stocks of ramen dishes. Fortunately the Tonkatsu was available and the broth didn't disappoint a hot thick 18 hours simmered broth added a powerful porky flavour, which was unique to its brand. The pork belly had a rich creamy texture which added flavour to the broth the longer you left it in it. The homemade noodles were infused with soy and miso, so it definitely added a salty taste which compliments the broth. The gyozas were very good with a light crispy texture coating, it complimented well with Tonkatsus own chilli oil. The chicken Karaage sadly didn't do too much justice and unfortunately was a little bit dry, therefore I would t recommend. Tonkatsu has made itself a marker for a ramen place and will hold on this title as long as it remains. I'm coming again soon!

It serves contemporary Japanese cuisine and the concept aims to fuse dining with entertainment. It is part of a small international group of restaurants and this is their first UK opening outside London. I spent a couple of hours at the launch party last night (thanks to Holly J!) and my first impressions were very good. You enter through an unassuming looking gate in to a very pleasant courtyard with lots of seating and umbrellas which I am sure will a lovely place to sip a cocktail on a sunny day (if we ever get any!). The decor of the restaurant itself is smart, very sleek and everything you would expect for a high-end Japanese restaurant. The staff were extremely welcoming and we were immediately offered a drink from a selection of wine, beer or cocktails. I tried one of their signature cucumber cooler cocktails made with Langleys gin which was very refreshing and surprisingly strong! There were lots of tasty canapes on offer ranging from sushi to mini bruschettas and sweet treats like mini meringues and macarons. Having briefly sampled the food and drink here, I'm now very keen try the full menu and look forward to visiting again soon.

Usually, it's not something I choose when I'm at a Japanese restaurant, so my expectations weren't particularly high. For lunch I had shrimp tempura w/curry and washed it down with a Coke. It wasn't too bad, but I thought it was a bit expensive for what I got. I'm used to having a bit more rice for soaking the curry sauce up, and I thought there would've been at least some dressing on the side for the salad. The shrimp tempura itself was cooked fine - nice and crunchy with the panko crumbs. It seems like everyone who comes here makes a bee-line for the bento boxes, so perhaps I'll try one of them. I wish their shop was local too - it would be nice to have a Japanese store in Birmingham (ideally next door) among Wing Yip and Seoul Plaza.

Not great enough to try again, but I'll probably pick a different variety next time. Mediocre it isn't. But good is such a bland word... Try the green tea latte!
