Why is it as costly as Whole Foods? VARIETY: Although I can remove items I do not want included, I cannot add items (or favorites) to replace the items that I do not want. WHAT I LIKE: What keeps me buying a box every week is the flavor! I guess it is because it was recently picked off a tree or out of the ground. Also, the produce is organic which means it's not as pretty, and often smaller, but it's the real thing and the taste is amazing. COMPETITION: There are several farms in the nearby areas, but they use pesticides ... Underwood Farms is close by, and they claim they do not use pesticides ... their prices are similar, but you can pick it up and choose items. They're truly local. Next I'm buying organic produce from Abundant Harvest - a California co-op that supports California farmers. I will need to pick up my box as opposed to having it delivered, but I don't care about that. The cost seems less than what I've been paying, but I've just signed up and have not received my first box yet ... I'll post an addendum to this after I do.

I paired it with lemon sorbet. It was a wonderful combination of sweet and tart. It was warm enough to sit out on their side patio and just relax for a while. I remarked to DH that I miss all the plants that the previous business owner had kept out on the patio for atmosphere. The current iteration is clean, but on the boring side. We love their food, so I'm overlooking the lack of ambiance for now. That being said, DH and I have been discussing recently how much we miss the kinds of places that used to have great style in their decor. Theme restaurants are more rare these days than they ought to be. I'm sorry for our kids and grandkids that they don't get to experience more of those kinds of visually interesting kinds of places without having to go to a theme park. They got a variety of ice creams, some common ones but also some new ones. This is the first place I ever had a chance to try the espresso ice cream, which is ice cream with a shot of espresso, and it was delicious, especially as a coffee lover and ice cream lover. Kids devoured all their ice cream, which is rare for them to do. They also serve food here, which we did not get to try but is good to know is an option. They have tables everywhere and a fountain machine and some unique teas I got to try, like their lavender tea! This was beautiful and so amazing. I can't wait to come back and grab another ice cream espresso from here and maybe try one of their sandwiches. Yum!

There's a story, and a reasonably happy ending to all of this. I was able to figure this out because when our order got short by a significant amount of food, I went looking to see if I could get this resolved at the restaurant. meanwhile, DoorDash was failing significantly (doorDash resolution when called was to offer an "email within three hours".) The Wings Out address that is shown online doesn't actually exist as an independent address. Wings Out also does not post a phone number for the local store. I figured out the location and the tie into Dave & Buster's when I got back home after my first failed search. Looking carefully at the map of the local mall, and not finding any such a suite number, I guessed at the overlap. I called the Dave & Buster's in Thousand Oaks in the Janss Mall and their staff both confirmed Wings Out was inside the operation, and was smart enough to kick my call to the general manager. I'll give the front line Dave and Buster staff credit for problem-solving. Meanwhile, their general manager, Nick Wilson, deserves some real credit for solving the problem. He offered to have the missing part of the order remade on the spot, ready to go in 15 minutes. I walked in the front door as Nick was walking up the main aisle with the to-go order in his hand . He had doubled the missing Wings Out order at no charge. We had time for a little chat about how well his crew and Nick himself resolved the problem, and I thanked him for his effort. The person who took my order was wearing a blue shirt; at no point did she make eye contact with me--she just went straight to asking what I wanted to order. A little more empathy would go a long way in helping them do a better job. I wasn't even asking for the food for free.
