The school is fairly small and individual attention is given to all students. Every class is lead and overseen by Shifu Hengxin, Shimu Arlene, or in most cases by both. What I noticed right away when I began training at the SKFTC is that Shifu Hengxin has no interest in convincing you, or selling you on his martial arts practice. There are no frills or exciting welcomes when walking into the school.. it's simply a matter of getting to work. To me this was refreshing, and says a lot about the sincerity Shifu has in his teaching, and the type of students he wants to acquire. The vibe is true, the vibe is authentic, those who are interested can stay, those who are not can leave. It sounds cold but I think in reality it is a warm and genuine way to teach. No student receives praise, you never hear "great job!", and your always asked to do more. They treat every student the same, which keeps everyone humble and connected.. not divided. Trying the free introductory class at the SKFTC was the best decision I have made in a long time. Being a student has revitalized me, and brought so much more balance into my life. The classes are very demanding and Shifu and Shimu work together to bring the best out of every student. This place has become a second home for me and will continue to be for a long time. p.s. I really dunno why the Kung Fu students' reviews got filtered, but as a non-student who attended many functions, i hope this review doesn't get filtered -_- So i was here for their 10-yr Anniversary: Yup, Sept 2013 marked 10 years for Moy Yee Kung Fu! The first part of the event was held at St. Joseph's College with a Kung Fu show that all the students worked hard on for 2+ months! The routines and soundtrack was entertaining and inspiring. The students consisted of literally all ages and nationalities, and it was wonderful to see them unite under the same cause. The second part of the event was dinner back @ the school where i got to meet & greet everyone, and toured the school. It's very clean and spacious, and looks like a place with a lot of history and culture. [one of the] Bai Si Ceremony: "bai si" means when you become a disciple ("tou-dai") under the master (aka SiFu); this is different from being a student. Many of the disciple-to-be and students also put on demonstrations. The ceremony i attended (not sure if these are held annually or whenever necessary) was outdoors in the backyard area of the school where there's plenty of space for show and seating. My friends and i were invited to see my god-brother receive his disciple title and it was incredibly moving and we were very proud of him. I do believe there's different meaning behind the various color shirts they receive and wear (yellow / blue / purple / gray / etc), I guess you'll just hafta go to find out~ Columbia U. Club Showcase: This was the BEST event I went to. The venue was pretty (one of the halls @ Columbia U), as were the sound & lighting in the show. The kung fu choreography was power and quite beautiful. They showed many forms of Wing Chun, Tai Chi, fighting scenes, etc... earning loud applause from us the audience. A moment i remembered most was when their ENTIRE kung fu family (there must have been 50+ ppl) gathered on the stage for a HUGE group pic after the show finished. It was a warm memory even for someone who was there to spectate. I also went to a Xmas White Elephant Party that's held annually where all the kung fu students' friends & family gather for a night of food, drinks, strong eggnog, year-end review, and GIFT STEALING! It was a lot of fun, and Brooklyn's not all that strange to me anymore :)

They taught some basic ideas about self defense which immediately just made sense to me. They taught some really good techniques to block punches, as well as different ways to throw punches and kicks (which are not what I'd naturally do). They had good mats, equipment, and protective gear to practice these techniques on other people (and I think that's important, as I don't believe that just practicing punching thin air is enough to help train yourself for a real fight situation). They also went over basic ways to try to calm situations down and try to avoid fights. It's a fairly small class (less than 15 students, I think) so you get a lot of individual attention. They were very clear and polite. I decided not to sign up for two reasons: 1. The prices were more than I personally could comfortably afford at this time (I don't wish to state the precise price here, myself, if it's not posted on their web site). 2. They have a rule that all students are required to wear masks at all times during practice. And although I respect caution for Covid, I personally feel that I need the freedom to breathe to the fullest whenever I'm exercising. But I otherwise loved this place a lot. I regret that those two above factors kept me from joining.

The instructors here are amazing! Sifu Kwok has an attentiveness to detail that seems rare in today's distracted world, and his dedication to the success of his students, paired with a very organized and structured curriculum, creates an atmosphere conducive to optimized learning. As his standards are high, it naturally follows that everyone teaching at the school is very knowledgeable, patient, friendly, and fantastic at imparting their knowledge. The school truly embodies its mottos, "Improvement of Mind and Body", "Ethical Self-Conduct", and "Unity Among Members" which are printed across the top beams of the dojo where people entering can easily read them. It is emphasized that one should use their heads when practicing self-defense. This flows into conducting oneself ethically, and learning what amount of force is necessary to mitigate a potential threat (learning that, perhaps, it isn't necessary to break this person's arm and blind him/her, maybe I can just put my arms up non-threateningly and say "Sorry! [Didn't mean to bump you]!", or even, "Get away from me!"). Ethical self-conduct also falls in line with Unity Among Members in that there is a strong emphasis within the school that the fellow students are your training partners: treat them with respect, both inside and outside the classroom. The classes are all mixed-level, and within the curriculum, everyone is encouraged to work with one another, whether a first-day beginner to a seasoned, 10-year practitioner. Because the school and its members are collectively interested in each individual's improvement and learning, this creates a safe space that fosters empathy for everyone. As for the physical setting, GMA has a nice front lobby for checking in/ collecting your attendance card, clean facilities for the changing rooms (one room for male, one for female). The dojo itself has nice padded floors, as well as the walls with many mirrors on 2 sides to check your stances-- all of which allow for a very helpful learning environment! All in all, I highly recommend this place!

Sad to say, the phrase "you never get a second chance to make a first impression" rings true. I walked down the stairs hoping for a welcoming greeting and someone who could answer questions. What I recieved was an indifferent stare from a woman who pointed me towards the wall with the class schedule and information, who then went back to whatever she was reading. I walked back up the stairs and tossed the brochure in the trash at the first corner garbage can. For the sake of their other students, hopefully their customer service has improved. Or perhaps they're following the "36 Chambers of Shaolin" style of recruitment, where one has to walk across a barrel bobbing in water to be accepted.
