Before I started, I was a young, untamed, and very brash individual, and yes, admittedly unhealthy and out of shape. As I have grown over time, under the tutelage of Sifu Paul Koh, I feel that I have improved myself dramatically. I have had many instructors, most of whom took themselves very seriously, but failed to demonstrate any interest in their student's advancement. Sifu Dean does not wish to simply drill his lessons into students on the hopes that they will eventually get it, but will take time to explain concepts and find a way to make us learn and improve. The way he structures his class is very different from my previous school, and I feel is better suited for my needs. He's able to teach each student at their particular level, or even steer lessons toward a students particular goal. He tries to stay away from the cookie-cutter one-size-fits-all lessons that are prevalent in most martial arts schools I have attended. Instead of practicing drills over and over for an hour I get customized lessons that cover my needs and flaws. That being said, he always finds time to make sure everyone gets to work with each other, allowing us to experience a higher student's abilities, or for us to practice our basics and instructor skills with newer students.
