The (volunteer) Kung Fu Masters are paying forward a priceless gift bequeathed them (& to countless others) by Grandmaster Alan Lee, himself a figure of unquestionable international repute atop the martial arts world. The boot-camp style old-school physical workout would (admittedly) challenge an 18 y/o marine recruit (I know, I was one half-century ago), but the lessons in breathing, form, and movement have improved my bearing, overall confidence, health awareness, and inner strength. "Fighting" is 10% of Kung Fu, mental and physical health being the main goal. Most priceless of all, students are allowed to attend the rare Sunday afternoon health lectures offered by (92 years old) world renowned Grandmaster Lee as he shares 3000 years of Chinese martial arts & health wisdom accumulated by his 8 decades + of vigorous research, pursuit, and practice. It is incredibly challenging and you are fatigued yet you feel great enjoyment as felt/experienced in the mind/body/heart After an entire day of teaching, the master, Sifu Paul Koh finally changes into his "casual" clothes to leave the training hall. But he can't leave just yet-he starts correcting a student's posture, form, or telling us a word of wisdom from his decades and decades of study. But he's there at least 6 out of 7 days of the week-why the need to push for more?! This is the dedication that is glaring among Sifu Koh, SiHing Andre and the incredible staff at BLKF. They not only have a truly sincere desire to teach you this system, but to help it benefit you outside the training hall, and consequently have a positive effect on society at large. A tall order? Yes, but with their iron clad loyalty, dedication and sense of duty coupled with the well oiled machine that is Bo Law Kung Fu, I can't imagine it being done any better The dedication trickles down to the students at BLKF-there is something unique about them and it is difficult to describe, but it is a quality crop. The only reason I haven't written a review earlier is because I have so much to say that I didn't know what points to express. I have had many instructors, most of whom took themselves very seriously, but failed to demonstrate any interest in their student's advancement. Sifu Dean does not wish to simply drill his lessons into students on the hopes that they will eventually get it, but will take time to explain concepts and find a way to make us learn and improve. The way he structures his class is very different from my previous school, and I feel is better suited for my needs. He's able to teach each student at their particular level, or even steer lessons toward a students particular goal. He tries to stay away from the cookie-cutter one-size-fits-all lessons that are prevalent in most martial arts schools I have attended. Instead of practicing drills over and over for an hour I get customized lessons that cover my needs and flaws. That being said, he always finds time to make sure everyone gets to work with each other, allowing us to experience a higher student's abilities, or for us to practice our basics and instructor skills with newer students. It is a very personal atmosphere and everyone is friendly to one another. Egos are checked at the door and we all seem to share the same goal of learning Wing Tsun Kung Fu and improving our skills.
