Those problems have since been fixed and all of the beers I've tried since have been very good. The service is friendly, and the staff are knowledgable. The place is tiny, and tucked away at the back of the building. It's an unfortunate location, but don't let that stop you from visiting and trying out what's available.

The lady stocking the shelves was super helpful and friendly, which definitely bumped this up from 3 stars to 4. The place is not very big and kind of has a weird layout. I wasn't able to pick up the exact ciders I wanted but I was able to find others I like. I was able to pick up all the 4 different types of beer my roommate wanted though. The lady working the cash was super friendly also, although it might have been nice if she asked me before stacking all 16 tall boys in one bag, it was a little heavy to carry and would have been nice if it was in two bags. Overall, the location has the basics of what you need but probably not some of the more specific things you might be looking to find. The staff is SUPER friendly though which totally makes up for not having the ciders I was looking for.

It's a little pricier than some of the other rums, so it doesn't sell as fast as the cheaper brands (but this one tastes so much better!) Anyhoo, we did not find it here. Well, ok, but they did have that really good wine in the cat shaped bottles - two colours of bottles, and it's still not expensive. Surely we will find time to drink this, hopefully over the holidays. When done, I like to stick a candle in the bottle and let it drip down all over the place. What the heck; beats having a cat and aggravating the allergies! And the bonus is you get good wine. And yes, I did pick up two bottles!! Onward ho to another LCBO to find that rum!!

They do have a clearance section towards the back of the store, but most of the stuff there was actually past its best before date. If you love gourmet stinky cheeses, they had lots! As for me, I'll just stick to brie, harvati and other benign to the nose cheeses thank you very much ;) Fun store to poke around. Lots of free parking.

This place is awesome! I have never been in before, although my husband was in over the holidays…read more(lucky me was the recipient!) What an awesome shop! And HUGE!! They have everything an upscale kitchen could need - from the tools to the groceries, including (but not limited to) spices - right down the pepper and salt mills, cheeses, chips, dishes, pots and pans, and top end coffee makers. I will definitely be back to try out the coffee shop in the corner. You need the rest that refreshes (coffee) after a stroll through this shop. What was I waiting for?? They had some very good sales - leftovers from Christmas. I picked up a mug for myself (which had the design of a scarf and mittens. What can I say? I'm a knitter!) and one of those stoneware cookie molds which came with a recipe. This was on sale at a good price; I've seen it at double that elsewhere in the city. Did you know that there's a difference in the mechanisms of a pepper and salt mills? Apparently the salt can rust and corrode a pepper mill, and the pepper is too hard for a salt mill. Whodathunk?! I actually went in looking for coffee pots. The ones we have at work have been seriously used and abused. I'm also feeling the need for an espresso or latté machine, and was hoping I might find one of those nifty combo things here. Turns out that the design I'm thinking of is a bit passé. Too bad for me! However, the good coffee makers they have here are too good for work (read: expensive), and could almost be professional, like for coffee shops. So, I will have to keep shopping. Yum. I've just gotta say this place was very inspiring!!

In my defense, I can justify my mistake by explaining that it is INSIDE the Tweed and Hickory store, although it's a separate entity. Tweed & Hickory is an upscale clothing and home decor store, which used to have a very decent kitchen supplies section that went by the wayside when The Unrefined Olive came into the space. Tasting bars for other foods have been around for a while; beer tastings come to mind; bakeries might offer a similar event. I have also been to another tasting bar for olive oil and balsamic vinaigrettes - but that was in BC. I didn't realize that there were such a thing here in Ottawa. Although your grocery stores offer a variety of oils and flavoured vinegars, I don't think they are quite at par with these... (Farm Boy has their own line of finer oils). It being summer right now, The Unrefined Olive has berry-flavoured olive oils - strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, and maybe others. I tried a clear one which was very pungent. I've started putting these on salads at home, as a dressing. And if you've ever been to finer Italian restaurants, they might offer bread dipping bowls with this type of flavoured oil and vinegar. The Unrefined Olive also offers a package of 4 small samples which would be ideal to give as a gift. While I was at it, I found humongous olives stuffed with feta and pickled in vermouth! There was also Canadian honey for sale. This is a great place to find hostess gifts. I will definitely be back.

The owner is really friendly, and helps you decide on what is best, based on the taste profile you are seeking. There are little steel cups that you can use to sample everything (except for the premium oils such as the truffle oils). I left with a Harissa olive oil, as the taste of the spicy peppers was prominent in the oil, but also had a delicious smoky taste. It would be amazing in pasta salads or drizzled on top of pizza; however, prices are quite steep, so I would use the oils sparingly! (For example, a 200ml of basil infused olive oil is $5.99 at La Bottega/Nicastro, whereas here it is $14.99...so definitely a splurge)! Overall, I would come here if feeling splurgy (or was more baller, haha), otherwise I would probably stick with olive oils from regular stores.
